Writer, migrant, surprisingly nice in person. Old queer. I would rather be blocked than tone policed. More meme literate than I should be at this age. I mainly shitpost, then sometimes make you cry.

The worst thing about Europe and the old world in general is the lack of hummingbirds.

Oh sure the murder, corruption, and colonialism is bad, but no hummingbirds, wtf

My French partner LOVES it when American journalists use the phrase "leader of the free world"

and I defend it

because I'm a troll.

have a group of people ever hated anything as much as boomers hate their own children and grandchildren?

#writerscoffeeclub May30. How do you achieve a sense of wonder in your stories?

A sense of wonder is one of two possible responses that emerge from a sense of alienation (distancing from the world-as-understood: the apprehension of something vast or alien that's normally just out of sight when viewed from a mundane perspective).

Of course, the alternative response is a sense of cosmic dread (which is what Lovecraftian horror relies on).

Whether you feel wonder or dread is a matter of tone.

quinn,
@quinn@social.circl.lu avatar

@cstross When I'm looking for wonder (I am rarely looking to do dread, but it has happened) I usually look to sudden scale changes in the narrative. The looking very closely at a small thing and seeing a universe inside of it kind of twist-and-scale. I think it takes some level of violation of expectation to really get that sense of wonder, there has to be a least a bit of surprise.

Young people are waking up every day to media about war, genocides, dead children. They are unsure of being able to make a living, scared by debt, violence, addiction, homelessness. They are unsure if the burning planet will even support their lives. They are struggling for secure basic housing after having their lives upended by a pandemic...

meanwhile the NYT:

The only folks for whom house arrest isn't a punishment are those who live in palaces with attached infinity pools and golf courses.

(Silvio Berlusconi fought off the inevitable guilty verdict until he aged past Italy's 70 year old limit for prison: then he served two years under house arrest—in his bunga-bunga mansion.)

Just as fines (with no alternative sentence) are the ticket price of wrongdoing for the wealthy rather than the punishment they are for ordinary folks.

@cstross well, i've definitely known people for whom the stay in house orders for covid were a dream come true. read all the books! talk to none of the humans!

quinn,
@quinn@social.circl.lu avatar

@cstross fair, fair, but when they do maybe some light hacking here and there, can't say i know of anyone who did that, and then pray for house confinement, even without computer, over having to talk to people 😂

quinn,
@quinn@social.circl.lu avatar

@cstross i suppose i know a disproportionate number of people who like to commit all their crimes from the comfort of home

So per Mission Local (https://missionlocal.org/2024/05/what-was-the-plan-understaffed-overcrowded-sf-jails/) 50% of the jail inmates in San Francisco are black.

SF's population is slightly less than 6% black.

So in case you were worried that places like Louisiana or Alabama were the most racist in the nation, put your mind at ease.

One thing that's still more fun about Twitter is the batshit insane arguments that sometimes find you. I just had some guys going at me for a while because he thinks Isreal is somehow behind the Sudanese civil war?

And that I should, I think, blame the Israelis for the Sudanese civil war? Anyway, I brought up UAE (who back Hemedti) and then he just kept sending me screenshots of my my tweets with kind of random highlighting, like it was proof of.. something.

My main historical conspiracy theory is that it's all the fault of the English, except for the bits that are the fault of the French. Well, ok, the Iberian peninsula and the Dutch are at fault as well, but earlier.

quinn,
@quinn@social.circl.lu avatar

@slothrop they had sooooo many secret treaties back then. just because they printed them in history books like 50 years later doesn't make it not a conspiracy theory, it makes it a successful one.
