Just taken the curl survey, almost all of which was me saying “no I haven’t used curl for that… curl does that? Really?”

If you’re a developer, you’re using curl whether you know it or not, I bet. But you’re also using it deliberately, I imagine. (I grab files with wget for historical reasons, but any time I want to do an actual http thing I use curl. You might use it for both.) Go tell them what you like; you owe them that at least, I think.

@thibaultmol Weird, when I mention that Mastodon has DMs, people pounce on me and tell me it doesn't actually.

The online backlash to #Windows #Recall amuses me tremendously. I started building a similar open-source (non-AI, local only) thing for #Linux a month ago.

It would take screenshots and create a timeline video of your day. It also enabled searching across your past usage of the computer.

The inspiration was an open-source macOS app called "Rem" which does the same thing.

Ah well, I guess I'll abandon that then, as it's going to be seen as toxic thanks to #Microsoft.

@ro Thanks. Sadly having seen the wild reactions online, I'm going to keep it to myself for now :)

popey,
@popey@mastodon.social avatar

@alto I'm confident in my logic. There are people going mad that it even takes screenshots at all. That is enough for some.

popey,
@popey@mastodon.social avatar

@ThePlant You and I might know that, but there's some proper weirdos drawing strange conclusions online about this.

popey,
@popey@mastodon.social avatar

@alto Sure, you and I know that, but there's plenty of online weirdos who don't.

This is the weirdest terminal screenshot I have ever seen on a technical support forum post. Also, the Pepper Pig avatar. The juxtaposition of tech and colour.

I love it. 🐷 😍

Excellent news.

But what have the Tories seen coming that means they don't want to hang on till the autumn?

@edavies A holiday in Tuscany.

I might need to book Friday the 5th off work, as I will likely be drinking heavily through the night as the votes come in!

popey,
@popey@mastodon.social avatar

@doctormo Nope. Wildly off. 13 years of this, literally anyone is better. But Starmer is a more decent human than any of the last bunch of Tory leaders.

popey,
@popey@mastodon.social avatar

I have just been reminded that at Anchore, we get every Friday off in July. Glorious. Let's vote every Thursday in July this year!

So another five years of tory rule? Got it.

popey,

Ok, feel free to keep your glass completely empty. I'll keep mine more than half full to compensate.

anyone have a link to a nice non-techy guide for people considering Linux dual booting in 2024?

popey,
@popey@mastodon.social avatar

@terry
My answer for "what's the experience like" in terms of dual-booting is simple:

  • Use separate disks for each OS

One disk contains Windows, the other contains Linux (whatever distro, I don't care)

That way, you boot up and choose the boot medium temporarily, or set the menu always to appear (if you think it might boot to the wrong one).

Separate disks means no paritioning problems, if you screw one up, you can get to the other. Full disk encryption works.

Happier life.

@popey@mastodon.social avatar

@terry

Sorry to hear that, my experience is based around a desktop and a ThinkPad (all hail the ThinkPad etc), which have physical capacity.

However! If the laptop is modern and has a decent speed USB C port, a very viable option is a chomky (capacity) but svelte (physically) external drive.

I got one of those rugged SanDisk Extreme 1TB jobbies. Very performant for most non-performance-critical stuff, more than adequate.

Under a hundred quid for 1TB seems reasonable too.

Just written an article about an "AI computer" which is, as far as I can tell, a ~$150 Rockchip RK3588 single-board computer that is being sold for $760 and requires an $11-a-month subscription... despite the selling point being you run your AI stuff locally, instead of trusting a cloud service.

Oh, and you need to access it from your existing smartphone, tablet, or PC, because it has no screen, keyboard, microphone, or speaker of its own. And no battery, so find a mains socket too.

Wow.

@thorstenvoice 👋 hello! Enjoyed your video on training piper on your voice! 🙏 I have a very old and poor recording of my voice in piper and other places (apope uk). It was made many years ago via a service called VocalID for Mycroft AI, and has spread! I'd like to re-record to improve the audio quality. Is there a video or document where you cover the audio recording process? Like, what phrases you say, how you process the audio into the datasets? Thanks!

popey,
@popey@mastodon.social avatar

@thorstenvoice You're too kind. Thanks! I'll try piper recording studio! Thanks also for making all the videos. I learned a lot!
