I see this pattern a lot.

Focusing on one's culpability to a problem as opposed to purely focusing on solving the problem.

They appear similiar, but the former is so much less productive and failure prone. If you are first worried about if you are part of the problem you will subconsciously not focus on
the areas where you might indeed be the problem.

For example consider people talking about racism or veganism.

Think of the kneejerk response: "but i have black friends".

0 does not mean false.

That is a 50 year old hack in #C that we have not managed to escape yet; it's even inconsistent. (Unix error codes are the other way around.) It's high time we moved on.

pkw,

@Crell I don't understand what your takeaway is. You don't like using bits? You tagged C so I am asking from the perspective of C.

My cat does this trilly meow. It's kinda of like a subdued version of the Chewbacca noise when he's anxious. or like a very very less dramatic version of the yell he does.

He does it like when I go let him in and he's had to wait to long at the door. He makes this noise as he walks past me like "c'mon dude".
It's like he's chastising me.

To be clear it's very subtle, like less serious than a feed me now meow.

Assange shouldn't go to prison because no one should. Him being extradited and sent to prison will be bad for journalists.

Deifying him and holding up his work as honest investigative journalism is, however, bullshit. He is a hack propagandist, a rapist, and certainly not a leftist nor someone anarchists should celebrate.

pkw,
@pkw@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@hakan_geijer @HeavenlyPossum @lumpentrashbandit
For me this is one of the applications of "no gods no masters".

So often the person who does a good deed is elevated above the deed itself.

After the cult of personality falls then the damage is that the good deeds might fall with it.

If you "no gods no masters" ahead of time then this won't happen.

I didn't know about Assange being a bad actor, but I already separated the artist from the artist, and I already don't want anybody in jail.

This isn't anything new, but I was lamenting that if you want to do web sites without javascript then you can't do things like multiselect "all" or "none" for a list of checkbox inputs. This is a very useful pattern, and the alternative is to check or uncheck each one individually.

But I realized you can totally do this without javascript, you just need to send intermediate POSTs back to the server and let the server do it.

I hear you, "That's a lot of extra work to replace something

Maybe having AP servers with that many accounts is a bad idea.

Western civilization has been gaslit into this notion that change is impossible.

The inertia of the status quo is so inevitable that we might as well accept it is as we burn this planet down.

So many times this is the argument that wins against risking a change in course. "We aren't ready to change now."
In a sense not being ready for big change is a tautology.

Which seems so obviously a broken notion. Not changing is a course of certain doom.

I am almost always on the side of any kind of

@StillIRise1963 In the US being a traitor is an offense punishable by death (potentially).

I have jumped to the conclusion that no one in the upper tier wants that to be applied to anyone else in the upper tier.

I think the class allegiance is stronger than their ideological party (for example) allegiance.

I'm adding javascript to select all or none checkboxes. I am allowing myself this, because you can still use the page without that, just have to click the individual select boxes.

    @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs My oldest friend has been pushing that show on me to watch from a perspective of 1. it's adorable and 2. it explains a lot of my behaviors.

    IDK It feels empowering for me to find out things that might explain particular behaviors i have.

    BUT it feels trivializing to have other people "diagnose me". Especially people that don't otherwise try to understand me.

    To be clear i wasn't planning on watching it before either.

    It would be easy to pick apples from a tree by changing how gravity works.

    But some things you cannot change.

    So you will have to do something else to get those apples out of the tree, and complaining about gravity isn't going to help.

    References to purity when discussing voting (as in, "leftists need to stop their purity seeking and vote Biden") just read as genocide denial and apologia to me at this point. Perhaps you think that it is strategically necessary to hold your nose and vote for Biden. But saying that people who don't agree with you on the strategic necessity of voting for a genocide enabler are seeking purity is such an obvious distortion of reality that a person might start to wonder if you actually are holding your nose. Maybe he smells just fine to you.

    People are complicated, but I don't think a person can understand and feel even a portion of the impact of Biden's continued material support for Israel and say that people who won't vote for him are seeking purity. Purity. The word choice itself is cruel. In my opinion, personally.

    pkw,
    @pkw@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @skuppr @claude_cahun Reading your view has distilled mine some.

    The adults-in-the-room are missing the basically pshchology of nihilism. If the choices are so bad. Then people start having reactions like "fuck it let it burn".
    (I am not promoting that, and it annoys me I have to clarify that, but visceral reactions are relevant.)

    I'm afraid to mention nihilism, because it implies I'm promoting it, and I am not. I am just saying people react differently as their despair levels ramp up.
