Question to the running community:

My favourite person has been using a polar watch for a couple years.
She went running 3-5 times a week, around 10k or sometimes more. She always run the speed that felt comfortable for her - not very fast, but she could run 2-3 hours if needed.
10 weeks ago, she programmed a polar pro running program for a half marathon. She has been following it closely doing slow Z2 runs/walks, and the required runs with Z3 and Z4 intervals.

@bentomn @bomkatt @rcr Agree entirely. A lot of watches default to the rule of thumb that Max HR = 220 minus age, which in my case would be 165. But I can exceed that by at least 10-15 bpm, probably 20 at a push. So if it is using a low max HR and then setting zones based on a percentage of that then it’ll set Z2 way lower than necessary. Take Z2 to mean “easy conversational running pace” and you’re in the right area.

12 miles exploring in some parts of the New Forest (in Hampshire, England) that I have not been to before. Warm afternoon but there was a helpful breeze to stop me overheating 👌🏻 Nice trails, some singletrack and some very unhelpful boggy sections.

8 miles of new (to me) slippery trails in the bag. Part urban, part rural with two crossings of the motorway and a trip through IKEAs car park. I would have popped in to buy some “senap och dill sås” but I didn’t have time for another 8 miles round the store😂

A concrete spiral pathway leads up to the M4 motorway providing a pedestrian crossing over the 8 lanes. In the distance another spiral brings the path back down on the far side of the road. The structure is functional but ugly, accentuated by the grey evening sky and light rain. Only the surrounding green vegetation provides any softness to the scene.

One of the largest HM in the world happened today in Göteborg. My new employer sponsors runners 👊 (signup fee, tent in the starting area with drinks, bbq, etc). Though I have my main ultra race next week I participated and took it as a training run (easy tempo pace without pushing it, definitely not race pace ). My start was at 1345 with over 30C in the sun (26C regular). 🥵😎. It was a fun event. More than 200000 spectators along the course. (Haven’t run it since 2004 (1:19 - 20 years later 20 minutes slower 🤣)). Legs felt quite fresh after it. Ran back home 🙈 (4km). Heat was noticeable on the HR. But it didn’t had an effect on my hydration needs. Took only small sips every 5K at the aid stations. 🤷‍♂️. Good day. https://www.goteborgsvarvet.se/

@sebastianhahn @recollir Outstanding pace. 10 mins quicker than my PB and in that heat🤯👏🏼

Trail running gets more interesting when landowners start screwing gates shut. Sure, they’ve labelled it as closed for repair, but have neither indicated when it will be repaired (it’s their responsibility) nor reported the blockage to the council’s rights of way team. So I’ve done it😁 Let’s keep those trails open 🙏🏻

I don’t think shovelling 3 tonnes of stone and then moving it one bucket at a time through the house was what Garmin had in mind for “rest day” yesterday. No today either…..have been cutting grass and shearing sheep. Now, another tonne of stone to shift🤦🏻

You know that thing when you scream down a hill on your mountain bike with a big stupid smile on your face and flies in your teeth, and you slow down at the bottom and grind to a halt in deeper than expected mud….with your foot still clipped in to the pedal🙄

A bit sad today. Maybe it's the weather which has finally broken. 🌧 Might be that I woke up with nasty cramp in my injured foot/ankle. 😖 Possibly that I've decided not to do No Mow May this year because we have a tick infestation in our lawn. 😭 Quite likely a bunch of other things that I can't put into words. 💔
Please send me your little wins, some climate positivity, or even just pictures of your cat. 🐱
Thank you x.

@Snoweider here’s a picture of, and healing vibes from, Rupert the dog. He sympathises with you because he had an operation on his butt last week (😬) so he’s a bit uncomfortable too and hoping for a speedy recovery.

On the assumption that I will survive a marathon in June, on 8 weeks training, I am now plotting an attempt on the Welsh 3000s in July. I have unfinished business with the 3000s after failing to hike them in sub-24 hours around 15 years ago. So now I’m going back to finish the job as a long running day out in the mountains. And this time I’m taking a mate🏃‍♂️🏔️. https://www.welsh3000s.co.uk

I love Beau Miles’s videos and his latest series on YouTube reflecting on the Western colonisation of Australia through an journey is a delightful masterclass in storytelling from a funny and very likeable . Also, if anyone knows what the music is in part 3 of the series between 4:15 and 5:15 please let me know. I like it👍🏼 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wc52QgnNhY&pp=ygUKYmVhdSBtaWxlcw%3D%3D

The appalling legacy of Tory policy

officehippy,
@officehippy@mas.to avatar

@CheRosach 🙁 I’m lucky that I am still registered with a dentist that looks after NHS patients. Last time I was there a woman came in and asked if they could treat her as an NHS patient. She was advised they have no capacity and their waiting list is probably two years. Terrible destruction of essential family services by these free market obsessed monsters.

@mlawton in the days when cars had CD players I had a company car with a 6 CD auto changer in the boot. Which got jammed. Having a young daughter I confirm it contained all manner of embarrassingly bad CDs like The Cheeky Girls which I was interrogated about at the Ford dealership for their amusement😩 The saving grace for my credibility was one Radiohead CD.

LED lights are great. What's not so great are the electronics used to drive them. This "bulb" died, but actually all of the LEDs are fine, it's the complicated drive circuit (32 components!) that died.

It would be great if you could just screw on a new driver, but there's lots of glue and machine crimped parts and it's meant to be tossed. Better yet, design more robust drivers without electrolytic caps.

How the bulbs attach to the drive circuit, the wire/disc on right is what screws into light socket
The drive circuit: 32 components, including some electrolytic capacitors which typically don’t last a really long time, especially confined in a hot space. The board is blackened from too much heat near the Q1 transistor.
backside view of driver board, mostly diodes and a few resistors. LED board is just LEDs on one side, back is heatsink

officehippy,
@officehippy@mas.to avatar

@jerzone Wow, that’s a lot of capacitors😳

Still a long way from again so I’m making the dog walks productive with litter picking. Another bag load today🙄 Substantial storm with high winds here yesterday. Three of the footpaths I use for local trail runs are now partially blocked by freshly fallen trees.

Taking a short pause from because I've picked up some pressure in the outer metatarsal bone on my left foot. Web searches suggest it could be overuse and the tendons are suffering. Of course, it could also be a stress fracture.

I had been on pace to reach my goal 1,000 km for the year, but I think I'm going to have to let it go.

officehippy,
@officehippy@mas.to avatar

@mlawton knowing the difference between a niggle and a genuine problem is the crux of training. You normally only ever find out when you push it too far so I think you’ve made a good call. Unlike me, who’s on the recovery bench with achilles tendinitis🙄

Frustrated injured runner post alert🚨

Dodgy achilles tendon so rested it a couple of days and cycled tonight to the gym instead of running. 30 mins on the elliptical, 20 minutes of moving lumps of metal about, and another 4 mile ride home. Foot hurts more now. Might have overdone it🤦🏻😩 Consoled myself with a mince pie and a cup of tea.
