There is a mysterious connection between #algebraic #surfaces and solutions of non-linear differential equations called the #Painlevé equations. Marta Mazzocco
@unibirmingham Pieter Roffelsen and I
@sydney_uni show surprising variations on this connection: https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.10541

A proof is an amazing wonderful 🎉 thing… So I am wondering why the word “only” is in this sentence: “Researchers have obtained only mathematical proofs that quantum computers will offer large gains over current, classical computers” https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-01692-9

@johncarlosbaez The issue I am concerned with is more about how the word “only” casts aspersions on what are (I hope!) valid mathematical constructs. Without them, the bridge we are walking along to get to operational quantum computers would be even more flimsy than we imagine, no?

Suppose E is an elliptic curve. I have groups of transformations that are compositions of automorphisms of E and a translation of the marked point on E. Is there a name for these transformations? #mathematics

Counterexamples are so useful. Why are they buried in the middle of papers authored by people who didn’t actually formulate them? In the paper I’m reading, one small benefit at least is that the inventor of the counterexample is named 🤷🏽‍♀️ But I want to know more, so much more …

Let’s imagine that a person has prepared lecture notes, tutorials, and all the material for a semester-long course, which she was allocated several months ago to teach for semester 1, which is starting in a week. /1

monsoon0,
@monsoon0@mathstodon.xyz avatar

Now let’s imagine that she receives an email just before she is set to leave for a conference stating that she cannot reach the previously allocated course, but must reach a new course with different material she must produce, starting in a week’s time… /2

monsoon0,
@monsoon0@mathstodon.xyz avatar

She starts a response saying “Is this a joke?” /3

monsoon0,
@monsoon0@mathstodon.xyz avatar

“No” the answer comes. Apparently, the statement says she has taught many similar level courses before, and therefore must have material from those she can use for this new course.. /4

My question to you, dear reader, is: would this happen to an alpha male ? /5

monsoon0,

What would your advice be for a person in this position? /6

@j_bertolotti Ahh … apologies are scarce commodity in academia …

How women are written out of stories of mathematical discovery: “Ruzsa published Marton’s conjecture in 1999, giving her full credit. ‘She came to that conjecture independently of me and Freiman, and probably before us,’ he said. ‘That’s why, when I talked to her, I decided to call it her conjecture.’ Still, mathematicians now refer to it as the polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa conjecture, or PFR.” https://www.quantamagazine.org/a-team-of-math-proves-a-critical-link-between-addition-and-sets-20231206/

This list of academics on Mathstodon is somewhat useful:

https://github.com/nathanlesage/academics-on-mastodon

But it doesn't list mathematicians or physicists. It does list "theologidons". What's a theologidon? A don who is a theologian?
