Just got a card from a student who has been having a rough year. She was having a great deal of trouble until I started showing her how to really USE a calculator. (It's algebra and geometry not arithmetic, and she knows the algorithms just makes SO MANY little mistakes)

Since then she's really taken off. I find very few people who could benefit from calculators know how to use them effectively, and there is a lot of snootiness and stigma in the way of this happening.

maryErudis,

@futurebird In my Ed Psych class that all future educators had to take, I was literally told that knowledge of subject matter was completely irrelevant to effective teaching; I refused to believe it, because elementary and middle school teachers can encourage their students to explore/experiment/discover mathematical meaning if the teachers themselves understand connections between the physical world and the mathematical objects that we use to make sense of reality around us

maryErudis,

@llewelly @moirearty @futurebird @dendari @notsoloud @the_roamer @bstacey “Calculus Made Easy” is a classic, not sure who the intended audience was. The mistake people make is in believing that they require a lot of remedial math work before trying to dive into something like Calculus. The book I’m writing is designed for small group study, w/ a facilitator/SME guiding conversations

So a long time ago, not in a galaxy far, far, away, but right here on Earth, I imagined a calendar year that is based on a 6-day week; A "month" is 5 weeks and there are 12 "months" in a year; between years there is a 5-day "pause" (and on leap years 6 day pause) during which time no interest is accrued, no nonessential business conducted, only the natural world is unaffected; Happy #Winter #Solstice one and all

I read that Eric Idle had a witty response to the question “Without googling, name one thing the USA invented.” I can do one better.

“Ballistic Armor Whiteboards” for classrooms… yes… white boards that ‘absorb’ bullets (some large enough that they deploy as shelters within the classroom). Words fail.

Companies are now grifting (on an unprecedented scale) off mass shooting events as the ‘new reality’ in America.

sigh

maryErudis, to random

To anyone who has heard about the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine. We are fine. Well, these days what is fine right? Lewiston is the home of Bates College, where I worked for a while. I don’t know if I knew any of the victims. The culture in Maine is very close-knit. My son’s school is closed today, even though we are 90 minutes by car from the incident. Our hearts are broken.

This got a laugh from @hrbrmstr so I'm going to leave it here: "I only need... 11 thousand... 7 hundred... ... and 80 pounds." #MugShot

Kinda absurd how much effort they put into hunting down Hunter Biden while the biggest criminal still walks free, Trumpet.

It seems like another desperate try from the republicans :nkoFacepalm2: while they support one of the biggest fails in the US :donaldtrump:

Cause why should you run a country when you can fck with people's lives all day right :nkof:

Thank you Europe for not being the US :blobpray:

maryErudis,

@stux hope springs eternal. Two prominent law professors in the “Federalist Society” of constitutional law experts are publishing a very lengthy, well-documented academic paper in Princeton Law Review in which they conclude that the 14th amendment, in its original intent, disqualifies the Trumpet guy from office because of his actions leading up to and on January 6; what’s striking is the authority this has among so-called “strict interpretationist” federal judges

#MardiPatisserie these pies were made with native #Maine wild blueberries, “vaccinium augustifolium” with 2x the antioxidants than your grocery store variety, reportedly because the species adapted to harsh climates of coastal Maine and Canada. #eleyimok (a shared way of life- Passamaquoddy)

Today is my dissertation proposal defense. That means I'll give a public lecture about my research in front of my committee.

As some folks may know, I'm doing another round of grad school, mid-career, focused on scientific decision making in the U.S. Congress https://sheril.substack.com/p/a-dissertation-on-democracy

In terms of PhD-ing, this is kind of like the pregame. I passed my comprehensive exams last year & will officially defend my dissertation & finish this Fall. So here goes...

maryErudis,

@Sheril I wish you all the best Sheril. #Fascinating proposal, and dare I say very bold. Dare I ask what your focus will be on? The broad concept of American legislative processes and motivations is quite complex. How do you propose to quantify or qualify something that appears quite reactionary, quirky, and prone to whim/fancy? I would be interested in what you ultimately decide to narrow the topic down to. Not sure I’d (personally) want to peek down that rabbit hole

maryErudis,

@Sheril e.g. Maine (and by extension all up and down the east coast) over the past decade or more concerning the lobster industry, the technology and methods used by lobster-folk (specifically the ropes used to raise and lower lobster traps), boating/yachting, and the impact that these human endeavors are having on the north atlantic right whale population. This issue is a case study in the failings of humans 2 discern Science or propaganda? https://rightwhalesandmainelobster.com

Sorry I haven't been posting; I'm going through stuff with my dad and decided to do a (daily) blog about it for as long as it makes sense to do so; it involves how to love an elderly parent who has dementia (with all the associated personality issues that come with it) and now has been diagnosed with colon cancer; and my other elderly parent who has difficulty balancing her own care with his, and does not set boundaries https://borntoteachmath.substack.com/p/day-one and https://borntoteachmath.substack.com/p/day-two

Hope you all don't mind that I'm going to post here whenever I make a significant addition/change to my Github course that I promised to make available to all but reserve the right to take credit for the work which is not revolutionary but evolutionary (read the Introduction) https://github.com/mrshrbrmstr/Math4Business/tree/main

After Nashville, coward Rep Tim Burchett admitted that the GOP is "not gonna fix" the scourge of weapons of war in his state; @everytown @momsdemand let's declare Monday May 15 (and as many days are needed after) a national #FixIt515 day... refuse to work until we have a national ban (I actually posted to the birdsite, that's how serious this is...)

Why '515' not only the date: it spells "SIS" or "1 up from SOS"... "Save One (1) Soul", the soul of the nation, of a single child

maryErudis, to random

It's going to take a nationwide walkout from our jobs to get any legislation done. Just so y'all know, I am ready to drop everything and show up in my state to protest the cowards in DC who lack of courage to ban weapons of war (along with other recommended measures). Seriously, who is with me? Let's refuse to work until something is done! Contact the folks at everytown.org or have we really become that complacent? Are we willing to CONTINUE to stand by while children die?

In case you were wondering, chatGPT (chat.openai.com) gives incorrect answers to quiz questions(a quiz that is required to pass if an individual wishes to be an R tutor on Wyzant). #rstats #tutor How do I know? Because I'm a tutor on Wyzant, and I just tested openai.com. It failed. The question is... Should we all be concerned? And if so, what should we be concerned about?

maryErudis,

@blake GPT-3.5 is the only one that is free. I'm too cheap to pay to be a "Plus subscriber". I'm not worried, I am curious. Sorry if I sounded worried.

maryErudis,

@blake fair. Are you saying that the current version in the browser is 4.0? It did not give me the ability to select a version, and according to the FAQ version 3.5 is still in production? Right?
