The Weekly #MobileLinux Update is going to be delayed, and will be out some time tomorrow.
Holidays and such :-)

@Shatur Lucky you!

@paavi I had a brief hands-on with an MNT Pocket Reform prototype at #37c3, and while it liked it a lot (it feels rock solid!), it's too much more bulky for this use case — at that point I can just as well carry my Surface Go 2.

@justin I think the short video in https://linmob.net/mcf06-some-progress-and-a-call-for-feedback/ shows some of the most important fixes. It's not a major change, I'm just trying to fix things here and there. There's still more to fix and improve, I hope to find the time for a short blog post tomorrow.

One of the most annoying things about being an English-language content creator are the Americans who insist that everything must be about them.

I can make a video that never mentions the US once, and I will get hundreds of responses about the US.

I will get people claiming that I'm wrong because of some issue unique to the US.

I will get Americans telling me that I have a moral responsibility to help them fix their cities, despite the fact that I'm not American and I don't live there.

linmob,
@linmob@fosstodon.org avatar

@notjustbikes Sounds familiar. People complained to me when phone calls (or worse, the entire Linux Phone) would not work with their American MVNO (and I then had to look up which one of the actual carriers I am vaguely familiar with that used).

The upside of this: It's easy to spot the Americans!

New toy!

(I blame talking to nice people from Fairphone at FOSDEM for this purchase decision. 😉
You can find details about the current status of the device on https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Fairphone_5_(fairphone-fp5) for now, I'll share my detailed impressions (I'm happy!) later on.)

Serious question: Which do you consider to be the least unethical among very-big-tech companies (let's say top 10 only), and why?

No judgement, just for statistical purposes! :ablobcatattention:

linmob,
@linmob@fosstodon.org avatar

@tuxdevices If it were a top 4, and those top 4 would be Microsoft, Apple, Google and Meta, I'd say Apple, although that feels weird and likely is only due to the fact that the first Computer I got to use at home (as in: my parents first computer) was an Apple Performa 600.

Tell me which companies are in a top 10, and I tell you my answer then :D /peter

Wrote a blog post about the first two months of my #pinephone Pro usage as a PDA and how I got around solving some initial hardware problems (spoiler: read the manual, then asked the support team).

@BeanieBarrow Nice post! For Firefox i can recommend you to give @user0 's fenix branch of https://codeberg.org/user0/mobile-config-firefox/src/branch/fenix a try. It works really well in landscape, I use it on my PinePhone Pro with keyboard case, too (see https://linmob.net/using-the-pinephone-pro-daily-despite-having-given-up-on-it/ for my post on it - I still use it daily.)

@goatwildernesscollective Thanks for the feedback!

Regarding the tab width: It's like that intentionally, switching tabs is supposed to happen via the ^ symbol 🙂

With regard to spacing: I need to think about that, if that can be done in a way that's generic and still works with fat fingers. Feel free to open an issue about that upstream: https://gitlab.com/postmarketOS/mobile-config-firefox/-/issues/new

I'm looking for a not-very-expensive tablet to use as a "feature-rich reader".
Requirements:

  • Cheaper than iPad
  • Bloat-free and updatable
  • 9"-10"

So vendor android is unacceptable, iPad is too expensive, and I ended up with something from aliexpress with #lineageos support, but it seems that the only actual device is Pixel Tablet, which is rather expensive and I don't need such a screen, camera, and all.

So now I'm really thinking about #pinetab from #pine64 with waydroid.

How mad does this sound? :blobcatthink:

@rayslava I can recommend Chromebook Tablets (the Chrome OS team cares about mainlining). MT8183 is boring, but works - e.g. the https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Lenovo_IdeaPad_Duet_Chromebook_(google-krane)
