New Dutch right-wing coalition to cut research, innovation, and environmental protections. Four parties hammer out agreement filled with bad news for scientists.

So far, I had only read car and cdr and always pronounced the latter cee-dee-ar.

I have heard it for the first time today and am quite surprised and amused about its actual pronunciation: /ˈkʌdər/

Sounds a but like cuddle to my ear :-D

Hear it here

@lgatto@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mehrad

yes, or head and tail, so much easier.

But I guess they were thinking in terms of register/address, and it made sense. Nowadays, were are so much further from the bare metal, that it stopped making sense.

And /ˈkʊdər/ sounds like cuter to me - even better :-D

Somebody asked a while back why I've published my last few books with Taylor & Francis. Well, I got mail a month ago from a student in Nigeria who was enjoying https://third-bit.com/sdxpy/ but didn't have reliable internet access, so could he get a PDF to read offline? Three weeks and some back and forth with DHL later, he has a physical copy free of charge. That's why.

lgatto,
@lgatto@fosstodon.org avatar

@gvwilson did T&F send him a hard copy free of charge? Did they do it upon your request?

If a technical book was free to read on the web under a Creative Commons license, would you still buy a digital copy if it were made available in other formats? (Think PDF, ePub, Info, etc)

lgatto,
@lgatto@fosstodon.org avatar

@daviwil

Unlikely, but I would buy the print version.

lgatto,
@lgatto@fosstodon.org avatar

@daviwil yes, indeed.

If I were to buy another digital version, it would be more as a way to make a donation, rather to actually get/own/read the epub/pdf...

This is poor journalism and/or click bait. It reminds me of the typical bullshit one comes across in the British tabloid press.

From the title: no, LLN is not an unsafe place. On the contrary, and hardly more so than many cities in Belgium, and Flanders.

From the first part I could read (I don't have access to the whole article) this is selected information that is presented in a biased form - typical from the tabloid press mentioned above.

[...]

lgatto,
@lgatto@fosstodon.org avatar

@philipdutre

There might be more useful information with links to facts in the remainder of the article, but at this point it probably doesn't matter any more, as the desired goal, to depicted a biased picture and steer up controversy has already been reached.

Here are some great tutorials on using Nix with R versions. Thank you @brodriguesco

https://www.brodrigues.co/tags/nix/

and videos, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3t83-2aNwY

I just tried getting started with and despite the great systems crafters material provided by @daviwil on Guile, found installation of Nix was much easier, and seems to have more up-to-date package ecosystem than Guix.

Worth a look @lgatto

@sje @brodriguesco @daviwil I have been reading about guix and nixos lately.

I have installed guix on my old laptop for now, but haven't had time to explore and play with it much. What made me go the guix is the lisp syntax for code and config.

It's probably only a matter of time before I get a go with nixos :-)

What you be a good programming project for a teenager (and his dad) who likes maths to learn coding in python? Something to work towards over several weeks?

He has some basics, but nothing like an interesting project to learn, practice and enjoy programming.

@lowrankjack @sjodogne - any suggestion? What would be a interesting first programming project for first year students in CS?

So it is more than abundantly clear has fundamental issues - what do you think we should be doing about it?

lgatto,
@lgatto@fosstodon.org avatar

@chartgerink

Peer review has issues (one being it doesn't scale), but at a small scale, it is also a great tool to exchange with fellow experts.

The problem isn't peer review itself, it's that it is used, as is, with all its flaws, as a gate keeping tool by the traditional (commercial) publishing enterprise, and thus considered, often too uncritically, as an validation instrument.

@deevybee I've had a couple of similar experiences in the past, albeit not with mdpi, but more traditional publishers. I found it very frustrating - editors should get back to reviewers who requested major changes, even if they are of a different opinion at the end.

I should also publicly write about theses experiences. Should I take into consideration that the reviews aren't public?

I hear that there's a genuine exodus from X/Twitter, which I think is great. But on the other hand, I don't get why many embrace Bluesky. Haven't we learnt a lesson from Twitter? Why not invest in a more open platform?

I have to confess that I have not tried Bluesky (and don't plan to for the reasons cited above) - it have its advantages. But still, no cool UI or feature, or even budding community is worth my time and efforts when we have seen what's at stake.
