Just finished the last episode of Hijack. Was a great show.

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@kylewritescode I just finished it 5 minutes ago!

Incredible show. Really wonder about the last scene, wasnā€™t needed. But basically the only throwaway scene in the entire show. Solid all the way.

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@kylewritescode yeah, it didnā€™t really add anything to the story except add a little more stress after the initial relief.
To me, it ruined a little of the relief and soured the ending just a touch.

But I am being very picky here, as I canā€™t fault any other part of the show.

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@kylewritescode Iā€™d be interested in hearing what you think the reasoning was!

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@kylewritescode oh right, I get it from that sense. But I also think they could have just had everyone disembark and him just struggle in cuffs, wanting his brother to be taken care of or something like that.

But hey, maybe they tried it and didnā€™t feel right šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Good morning

How is everyone doing today? Let's start the day and the week with our and have all of you tell me what you did over the weekend and what you have planned for the week ahead.

For me, it's just work stuff and then some video games here and there as well as lots of time to rest and relax hopefully.

Nothing too major planned for the week, at least not right now.

An animated image that has the sun moving around and blinking it's little eyes. The words good morning are moving around in the clouds behind them.

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@cliffwade @kylewritescode love the animation! Very cute!

I worked on a silly little game, did some financial planning (and posted a calculator to help others like me), finished up a new tabletop for a side table and went to the gym.

I also started reading Game of Birds and Wolves, which has started really well, on describing the horrors of war before approaching the cold strategic aspects.

The week ahead is mostly work and rest when I can.

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@cliffwade @kylewritescode it definitely sounds more than it was. Each thing was only a couple of hours each!

Nature themed #FollowFriday time! šŸŒæ

If you want to add some brightness to your feed, I highly recommend following #Bloomscrolling

If youā€™re wanting more greenery, or are just a fan of trees, there is #ThickTrunkTuesday

Finally, for the wilder side of you, I recommend #Wildflowers

Unsure how to follow tags? Ask away and Iā€™m sure people will help, Iā€™m using a client where I can follow tags and the posts appear in my home feed.

    @psychicparrot42 I always say, most of tricky development is done away from the computer. When youā€™re at the computer youā€™re just typing the solution.

    @maxleibman hey, if itā€™s a paid day off youā€™re doing it for fun AND money.

    I sincerely hope you have a good weekend though.

    OK folks, Mastodon can't do polls with attachments so we'll do this the old-fashioned way.

    Do you prefer this helpful onboarding/welcome text to sit in the middle, or on the left of the page?

    Screenshot of a meal planning app showing a welcome text placed on the left the page as aligning stuff with the center is a cardinal sin in UX/UI.

    leroy,
    @leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

    @simeon when I first looked at it, my eyes completely skipped the left-aligned text. But focused on the text in the Center-aligned variant.

    However, I would prefer a much larger call-to-action if app functionality is dependent on users going through this

    leroy,
    @leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

    @simeon In that case it doesnā€™t seem high priority if whichever way the user progresses, they will be provided a button to add a recipe.

    @victor @simeon you might be interested in knowing this. Of course the law in your region will be different from this user.
    I donā€™t think you need to rush to this as youā€™re still manually approving accounts, but figured Iā€™d let you know so you can do your due diligence

    @simeon@indiehackers.social avatar

    I just realized Iā€™ve made a data modelling mistake that will require refactoring half the appā€¦ hehe.

    TIL that you should be very careful when deciding to nullify a foreign key instead of cascading the deletion of the referenced object.

    I thought Iā€™d ā€œfixā€ the issue by manually deleting stuff but then my previous CouchDB life flashed before my eyes and I remembered all the database related logic intermixed with the business logic and went ā€œNah, naaah! Itā€™s refactoring time!ā€

    leroy,
    @leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

    @simeon oh noooooo! Hopefully the refactor doesnā€™t take too long!

    How does everyone on indiehackers.social feel about creating a live document about what to do after creating your account?

    Things I would have loved to know when starting out on

    a. Get a client that supports following hashtags
    b. Follow tags e.g.
    c. Follow other local feeds based on interest (e.g. gardening, open source, gamedev)

    I assume your intro message is automated @simeon , maybe it could include a link to this ā€˜First Stepsā€™ document?

    leroy,
    @leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

    @simeon @jwkicklighter Which aligns with other conversations I have had around this that you HAVE to exclude people that want to exclude others. It feels contradictory, but not when you consider that the moderator is excluding someone for a discussion, because that person wants to exclude others from human rights.

    I have also heard stories from bartenders havenā€™t to very quickly shutdown hateful language, or else over time bars turn into places full of hate speech.

    leroy,
    @leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

    @simeon @jwkicklighter e.g. one person says something bad. One patron will leave. Next time another patron leaves. Slowly over time, the only people remaining are those who are fine with that type of language.

    I think you can incorporate these points but still keep a positive attitude in those rules that you want. E.g. positive introduction, acknowledge that we need strict rules, conclude on building something positive.

    Hope this all helps!

    leroy,
    @leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

    @jwkicklighter @simeon oh for sure! Rules are never fully comprehensive. But itā€™s a signal to those who are concerned, that their concerns are valid AND action will be taken.

    I think there is a big perceptual difference between what we currently have to what it would be if we included ā€œfor example, anti-trans rhetoric is completely unacceptableā€.

    leroy,
    @leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

    @simeon @jwkicklighter so sorry to hear this. It sucks is a tiring and endless fight. I hope you can find the support you need, because itā€™s a massive struggle alone! šŸ’›

    leroy,
    @leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

    @simeon @jwkicklighter you can also write things in a more positive way e.g. ā€œthis instance believes trans rights are human rightsā€

    However, Iā€™m not sure if every point can be written in the affirmative. Iā€™ll dig around and see what I can find!

    Definitely appreciate the dialogue :)

    leroy,
    @leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

    @simeon @jwkicklighter Found this very comprehensive about page: https://mstdn.ca/about

    Itā€™s definitely more than I expect for the average instance, but potentially something to reference in the future! Iā€™m doing my research on this very slowly as my capacity isnā€™t all there
