I build recommender systems that work for actual people. Aspirational cyclist. Actual dog person. Not even remotely neurotypical.

I run RecSys.social. I don’t accept follow requests from accounts without a bio or profile picture.

The last 24 hours have been some of the roughest, most brutal, most draining, most discouraging, and most disheartening I have experienced in a very very long time. I am tired, I am worn, I have not slept, and I am so exhausted. I am too tired to cry.

Does anyone have cheerful anything right now? News, puppies, pictures, anything? ❤️

@hazelweakly She’s at the dog park in this picture, so it’s sort of happy mid-exercise lounging. The park is right out by Lake Erie and she loves it there—lots of space to run around, other dogs to meet and greet, usually a nice breeze coming off the lake.

I know there's a lot of crossover between ADHD and autism but some days I sure do wonder if I'm not just both.

karlhigley,
@karlhigley@recsys.social avatar

@gsuberland My ADHD partner and I have similar reactions to those scenes, and it’s one of the reasons we wonder if we’re both autistic too 🤔

Any devs in the house? I’m getting unpickling error A, which I’ve never seen before. I searched StackOverflow already, obv. It’s esp hard to troubleshoot because it’s in a Jupyter notebook environment controlled by my professor, so I can only change certain parts of the code. TA wasn’t much help—told me to install pickle. 🤦🏼‍♀️

karlhigley,
@karlhigley@recsys.social avatar

@nicolemark Is it possible that the file was saved with compression (like gzip) or from a library like joblib that has its own code for serialization/pickling? If so, matching the compression settings or reading the file with the same library used to write it may help.

Day three of meds, let's go!

I don't work Fridays so today is up to me. I have a free morning and then funnily enough, I'm off to the office late afternoon to see an ex colleague.

karlhigley,
@karlhigley@recsys.social avatar

@gsuberland @james My partner often says she doesn’t feel hungry and nothing sounds good, but then absolutely devours whatever meal I put in front of her and says things like “I didn’t realize how hungry I was until I started eating.” It took me a while to make the connection to meds and side effects, and then a while longer to learn to say “Just come keep me company at the table and see how you feel once you have a few bites.”

Imagine if we one day discover that an oil derived from snakes has some genuine medicinal benefit.

karlhigley,
@karlhigley@recsys.social avatar

@andrewfeeney The irony is that actual snake oil really was (and is) effective in treating arthritis and bursitis, and is known as a fraudulent product not because it didn’t have genuine benefits but due to patent medicines claiming to contain snake oil that were instead counterfeiting it with oil from other sources

    @lzg In general, things get less chaotic over time, but it is sometimes A Lot. The episodes in season 2 that follow the individual characters are excellent—I liked Richie’s episode in particular, but they’re all good.

    Wow, I got my rucking up to 20 pounds for 1.35 miles. Someday soon I'll get as far as my usual 1.6 mile walking loop. And then I guess once it gets easy I'll increase the weight some.

    That, therapy, and going to lunch with a friend seems to have totally wiped me out for the day.

    karlhigley,

    We need new conceptualizations of productivity.

    All of this is so fascinating, but in this moment I’m struck by: Huh works 3 hours/day (and earns Fields Medal for breakthroughs)

    karlhigley,
    @karlhigley@recsys.social avatar

    @RuthMalan I say this with great admiration, respect, and (self-)recognition: this person is not neurotypical. Rethinking what productivity looks like in ways that align more readily with what it actually is would make work environments more inclusive of neurodiversity.

    Watching a video on recommender systems and they very astutely provide Amazon as an example of someone leaning on quantity of data to skimp on quality of algorithm.

    karlhigley,

    @brohrer @randomgeek Where “turtles” is code for “dot products and horrendously inefficient approximations of dot products.”

    The recs problem has two interacting entities where how much changing either one affects the relevance of one to the other depends on the other. So do dot products (which you can see from the partial derivatives.)

    karlhigley,
    @karlhigley@recsys.social avatar

    @brohrer @randomgeek If you understand dot products and the geometrical effects they have on learned embedding spaces decently well, you understand the relevant fundamentals better than a significant fraction of actual recs practitioners.

    This is your semi-regular reminder that there are graphical interfaces to git and you should use them, because they make stuff like cherry-picking, rebasing, and resolving conflicts way easier.

    I used SourceTree on Mac for years and later switched to GitKraken for Linux support. They’re both good, and both a hell of a lot better than git’s command line interface.

    Don’t be macho about this—it’s much better to be effective.
