I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

@grimalkina no one has said inform7 yet? Program like you’re writing a story in English! It’s a “joy” to internet search for syntax documentation or errors because it’s just English. I made this interactive fiction about my cats for my partner for his birthday many years ago https://www.superfiretruck.com/if4adam/

Aaron reed has a good book about it https://aaronareed.net/creating-interactive-fiction-with-inform-7/

is the subaru mechanic at the dealership bad or is our car just dumb (and in need of increasingly expensive repairs)

kaflurbaleen,
@kaflurbaleen@mastodon.social avatar

@paul we have a 2011 outback. Last spring it had a wobble/pulse when braking that we got fixed. Now it has a groan/hum that they said was a bearing/alignment problem that is even more $ to fix. Since they’re both wheel/axel/body issues, I wonder if fixing the first somehow led to the second? Maybe not, maybe it’s just our car being problematic. They’re real problems that they’re fixing, we just never get it back from the dealer mechanic without paying a bunch of $.

kaflurbaleen,
@kaflurbaleen@mastodon.social avatar

@paul repairs are underway, but definitely considering taking it somewhere else next time it needs servicing!

Trying not to think how this now 13 year old outback replaced another 13 year old outback that died 😅

@kaflurbaleen@mastodon.social avatar

@paul I’m sorry about your previous outback and the rogue wave!!

just got back from a trip, took a bunch of photos, and now i'm at a loss for how to share them.

i don't want to host them on FB/Google/Flickr or in bits and pieces on Mastodon.

i'm considering making a wEbPaGe??? or a blog post?

kaflurbaleen,
@kaflurbaleen@mastodon.social avatar

i will probably be posting them on those services, i just am thinking about the main home for these photos and where i should put them to be able to revisit them in ~20 years.

they treated my friend really nicely when she was a photographer for Good Times and sent her home with various boxes of goodies that I found quite delicious chefs kiss

Monday morning read: The untold history of Barbie Fashion Designer, the first mass-market ‘game for girls’ https://www.polygon.com/23776996/barbie-fashion-designer-retro-game-untold-story-history

lots of 90s game dev lore gems in it; feels incredible they pulled it off tbh

and, was it lowkey the first mainstream 3D printing game, too??

@shortridge this was a fuckin' iconic piece of software + physical creation that i was the exact right age for when it came out (able to operate it all myself and put the fabric paper in my printer but also still vaguely interested in barbie and making clothes for my toys)

there's definitely SOME kinda link between me playing barbie fashion designer and then later making feminist hacker barbie to defend the honor of computer engineer barbie

Last night we went out to eat with a friend. We only eat outside given my whole almost-died-last-year #LongCovid thing. The host sneeringly said outdoors was only for big parties (no one was outside). My friend without missing a beat or looking at me said "Maybe you could check, just for tonight. It's a health need." Host walked away, immediately came back, said ok.

It's those tiny moments. The deflection. Calling the bluff. The allyship. The shielding from stress instead of redirecting stress.

@grimalkina my cousin-in-law brought his Aranet co2 monitor to a family gathering, said something like “yeah, I’m a lot of ‘fun’ when I bring this to parties” and we opened some doors and windows when the reading got a little too high. It was great, I really appreciated it!

Also his neutral explanation to his mom: oh it just measures co2, which is what we breath out, so it says how much we’re all sharing each other’s exhales regardless of what’s in there…

The week of my birthday, about 6 months ago, I made a daily quest of touching water for 7 days and it was pretty good. I touched water today so I’m gonna try doing that again this week.

kaflurbaleen,
@kaflurbaleen@mastodon.social avatar

Second day of trying to touch water: I’m gonna say that visiting not one but TWO state park beaches and being in a blustery drizzle near the angry ocean totally counts, even if I didn’t stick a toe in or anything.

Silvery ocean and clouds on the other side of a sandy muddy parking lot

kaflurbaleen,
@kaflurbaleen@mastodon.social avatar

Day 3 of touching water and added “be inside a tree” as a bonus side quest

Looking up at the hollow charcoaled walls of a burned tree, more tall trees converging in the center of the photo

kaflurbaleen,
@kaflurbaleen@mastodon.social avatar

Day 4 (two days ago) which wasn’t the most exciting body of water and then a dog ran at me barking as I emerged from the shadows (it was dusk). No harm, owner apologized profusely even when I accidentally apologized back for spooking his dog.

kaflurbaleen,
@kaflurbaleen@mastodon.social avatar

Day 5: didn’t touch water except of course plumbed water at home, too much going on

kaflurbaleen,
@kaflurbaleen@mastodon.social avatar

Day 6: my family doesn’t even know i snuck off to touch water while grocery shopping this morning.

Kind of a time lapse: standing on soggy sand and then standing in some shallow waves. Not as cold as I expected it would be.

Looking out across beach with rock arch in distance, shallow wave which moved in from the right covering most of the sand in front of the photographer indicating photographer is standing in the water

when Pittsburgh Public Schools was the last (THE LAST) medium/large school district to go back to school in the USA, we organized, facing huge pushback. was in Spring 2021, over a year after virtual school started and most people could get vaccinated (and masks were required). we "succeeded", but what we knew was happening was happening. kids were getting behind, still haven't recovered, and we're about to stop investing in trying to fix the problems we caused.

It also does notifications/alerts about nearby fires.

I guess it’s smoky here because the northern CA is on fire.
