Notes for Companies in 2024:

  • My decision to cancel a service is not a problem for you to solve.

  • If the rest of your services are available to me online then this should be also.

  • Do not make the only cancellation route me telling my decision to a human whose main purpose is finding ways to make me change my mind.

  • If you have a queue system in place, you need to keep updating people as to their position in the queue, so they can judge whether to stay on the line or call again later.

  • Also do not make that route a per-minute charge number.

  • Every delay in responding to my request, every question looking for information, becomes more reason for the Cancellation. You have my request and I'm under no obligation to explain it to your satisfaction.

  • If I haven't given you my email address at any point don't ask for it as a "security question" (!)

This genuinely made me angry today; if you don't value my ability to make my own decisions then you don't deserve me as a customer. It was transparently obvious why you don't allow people to cancel online; it has everything to do with Retention efforts and nothing to do with 'checking what people still owe', something that can absolutely be confirmed and dealt with online.

@ernie I find the article insulting to Google+. Google+ had some ideas that could have made social media better and safer if they had been a bit more fleshed out. Gemini in Google Search has no redeeming qualities.

Ein Video vieler tanzender Menschen auf Sylt. Im Hintergrund ist ein Sonnenuntergang zu sehen. Die Gruppe ist sehr groß, ungefähr 150 Leute. Über das Video ist ein Post von „Tarek Bae” gelegt mit folgenden Inhalt „Nein, das ist nicht Sachsen. Das sind wohlhabende Mitbürger beim Urlaub auf der Insel Sylt. Als wäre es das normalstes der Welt. Die „Mitte der Gesellschaft”, wie Medien gern sagen. Aber „nie wieder ist jetzt” und so, WA? Wir haben ein gigantisches Rassismusproblem.”

@catarinac as casas são para os turistas e "nómadas digitais" (porque os americanos não podem ser imigrantes). Os tugas trabalhadores podem viver a 2 horas do trabalho porque os estrangeiros precisam de servos. Os outros, o governo tem que os pôr onde a aristocracia não os veja. @ainmosni as someone that has been in the same job for more than a decade I would say understanding that is fundamental to have a healthy relationship with your employer. You provide a service, they pay you for it, and that's it. Individuals can help, but as soon as the "organization" is involved the only thing that matters are the numbers.

@ainmosni in my team we use "refinement". But the trend in the English language of abandoning words because they became euphemisms for something else or are used in a negative way in some contexts is also problematic.

A shower thought I had about #capitalism is that one of the reasons why it seems so resistant against revolution is because the system keeps people too busy, and is self-enforcing.

We need to pay rent, food, etc, which means we need to keep making money, just for our survival. And if we try to escape that system, it's not just the state and the police coming for us, but our fellow citizens as well, as they too need to pay rent, etc.

Just a random thought I had, so there's likely errors.

@ainmosni that's something Orwell discusses in 1984. Revolutions rarely start from the bottom, they start from the middle class and maybe the lower end of the upper class because those include the people that are not struggling not to drown but are also not at the top of the food chain. Shrink and control the middle class and you can at least postpone the guillotine season.

Apple, deservedly, gets fined 1.8B€ by the EU for antitrust behaviour. But considering that #Apple is worth 2.7T$, that's still less than a thousandth of what Apple is worth.

What a weird reality we live in where 1.8B€ can be considered a slap on the wrist.

@ainmosni I wouldn't compare it with the total worth because it's about a specific segment of business. 2 billion euros is something like 25% of the yearly revenue of Apple Music, so it should be enough to push Apple to cut the crap.

Immense power projection by the USA , carrier strike group with USS Ford already present in the Mediterranean, the USS Eisenhower will join them, they can easily fight all forces in the middle east if necessary, also they can fully control the airspace. Iran and/or Hezbollah will think twice before trying any major actions.

@kevinrothrock So, bombing the training facilities of the other side is now a valid football strategy? Most of the sanctions I know of against youth teams were done for the violent actions of the adults surrounding the team, so it's not like there's no precedent for suspending a youth team for the barbaric behavior of their community.

@kevinrothrock Football federations, rightfully, suspend youth teams for things like parents throwing rocks at the other team's bus (unfortunately) all the time. So why shouldn't UEFA suspend Russia's youth teams when their parents are bombing another country?

Where do you draw the line between AI you like and dislike? My sense is there's a serious disdain for e.g. generative art or text, but not for other machine-learning stuff, like plant ID apps or speech to text software.
