As an on-again off-again Star Wars obsessive, I am really enjoying Ahsoka.

Slow and thoughtful, original but full of callbacks. New mysterious characters. Really hopeful for what’s next.

I never finished the Rebels cartoon, and it turns out that is kind of important. If you’re feeling lost, check out the “New Rockstars” channel on YouTube. They have incredible “breakdown” videos for each episode that explain all the references, as well as summaries of each season of Rebels to catch you up.

Signal adding usernames is 👌🏻👏🏻🙏🏻

Leaking your phone number is a nightmare and also complicated when dealing with international numbers. Usernames will make it so much easier.

Just joined a WhatsApp for my apartment building here in Mexico and I can already feel the sms spam coming my way.

jerclarke,
@jerclarke@mastodon.social avatar

@shawnhooper Yeah I’d rather have Signal full time but here in Mexico WA is so dominant, trying to escape it is futile. Needed for businesses, groups, etc.

At least it’s encrypted 🤷🏻‍♀️

Usernames in Signal is amazing because it will give a specific, concrete feature that puts it above WA.

pre, to Facebook

One of the hilarious things going on is that the big capital-owned news companies in Canada decided that they wanted some of Facebook's money.

So they bribed the Canadian politicians into writing a copyright law which requires that anyone who links to the big capital-owned news companies pay those big capital-owned media conglomerates money for every link.

😆 🤣

Obviously Facebook then just stopped allowing their users to do that, because they don't even want their users to leave Facebook and go to news company websites anyway. It's the users that wanted to be able to link like that.

😆 🤣 And now.. And now..🤣 😆

For reasons not unrelated to the corporate/capital capture of law and sovereignty, all of Canada is in fire.

People are trying to tell their friends on Facebook about how they have to immediately leave the town because it's going to burn down and they are all going to die.

But they are trying to do so by linking to the local capital-owned news media conglomerate's web-pages.

But doing that isn't allowed any more because, the news media conglomerates demand payment for that sort of thing, backed up by genuinely paid-for "democratic" bribery to the Canadian political parties.

😆 🤣 And now.. And now..🤣 😆

The Canadian government is today demanding that Facebook allow the linking even though it's the Canadian government's laws that tax and so forbid it.

😆

This timeline is so fucking cursed. I really hate it when Facebook is right.

Though I do hate it more when people are all burning.

@reneestephen @JeffGrigg @danielharan @nev @pre You can make an argument that the embeds are somehow a “use” but let’s be clear: the news sites are actively populating those embeds. They put meta fields in their HTML specifically to ensure that those embeds are robust and have the images and text they want.

Why? Because it’s good for them. They’d rather have the clicks they get rather than nothing.

jerclarke,
@jerclarke@mastodon.social avatar

@reneestephen @JeffGrigg @danielharan @nev @pre

This is common sense from a publisher perspective. They invest tons of time in optimizing these embeds to be seen as much as possible. Whether it’s through metadata or carefully posting links themselves and begging users to do so with Facebook buttons on the articles.

Asking to be paid for these embeds is just double-dipping.

They can block the embed bot if they want, but that would be self-harm.

jerclarke,
@jerclarke@mastodon.social avatar

@reneestephen @JeffGrigg @danielharan @nev @pre OK.

But news sites want the embeds to be seen becuase it’s better than not being seen, because someone might click.

News needs funding, but link tax isn’t working and was never going to work.

jerclarke,
@jerclarke@mastodon.social avatar

@reneestephen @JeffGrigg @danielharan @nev @pre Seriously, if they didn’t want the embeds to show, they would ask for a way to disable them for your domain, no?

This is already possible but not simple (banning a user agent). No one is asking for this because the embeds are beneficial rather than harmful.

    @chris I went years without a second monitor because of the period where there were no high res options.

    Since getting my 4K 23”, then now 5K 27”, doing work without them feels like using my phone 😅

    PSA: Mac users should NOT buy Baldur's Gate III yet, as it is still in "Early Access" despite being fully released for Windows.

    Steam didn't warn me AT ALL about this, and I ended up playing several hours of the buggy version before realizing that I will lose all my progress once the final game comes out (~Sep 6):

    > Larian previously warned that save files from the game's early access period will not carry over to the game's full release

    Source: https://www.eurogamer.net/baldurs-gate-3-early-access-players-should-delete-their-saves-now-then-remove-the-game

    jerclarke,
    @jerclarke@mastodon.social avatar

    To be clear, it's fine that the macOS version is delayed. Sucks but I'd rather wait for a stable version and build my save game off that.

    The problem is Steam not giving any indication of this before taking my 90$. Very irresponsible of them. I even read the System Requirements for macOS and there was no mention.

    There MUST be a way for them to communicate this to Mac users, and if not, they need to create one. Not that I should be surprised. Steam doesn't care about Mac users and never has.

    jerclarke,
    @jerclarke@mastodon.social avatar

    @feld Isn't that for the SteamDeck product that runs Linux?

    Either way, what I'm talking about is the way the list their games. You still see the apple logo on games that haven't worked since Catalina released because of the 64bit transition, which makes it really hard to find games to play on a modern Mac.

    They clearly aren't willing to build their store to help macOS users find the games that will work.

    Very interesting read about gentrification as applied to “digital nomads” in Latin America.

    Of course this is especially important to me as a foreigner living in Mexico City (#1 on the list of popular cities, apparently). I live in an apartment with my partner who is Mexican, so it’s complicated, but I always try to second-guess myself just in case 🙃 https://globalvoices.org/2023/07/18/digital-nomads-gentrification-or-economic-boost/

    Glad to see it picked back up!

    The hardest part of getting into Mastodon is finding people to follow. Here are some recommendations of people that light up my timeline. They are all #wholesome, and most of them talk about #tech and #politics in various ways, as well as sharing fun stuff too. As always with mastodon, if you’re just getting started,
    just follow lots of people without stressing about it, then unfollow anyone you find boring just as easily!
