I am now in the exciting time immediately following porting a library to a new language: the “why is everything so slow and how do I make it faster???” phase. 😅🔥

Time to spend some quality time with the profiler and the compiler docs. 🎉

@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@thattommyhall Well, I'm in a somewhat unique position in that all of my development at this point is for my own art projects, and I'm a bit of a language nerd who really enjoys exploring the sweet spots of different languages. As a result, I've been really exploring different environments for interactive, exploratory programming. Several years ago I was using Julia, then I moved to JS/TS and WebGL, but I've always been fascinated with the Common Lisp programming experience. (continued)

jeffpalmer,
@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@thattommyhall So, at the moment I'm using sbcl and OpenGL (after some fruitless attempts to try to cram WebGPU in there - that's a task for later).

So far I'm loving the interactive experience, and for whatever reason (perhaps my age, lol) CL just feels good. I'll probably grow out of this in a bit, but at the moment it's a nice experiment.

If Julia could provide the type of REPL experience I get with CL/Clojure, I'd probably go back to it, but it's not quite there yet.

More to come!

@thattommyhall Yes! I love his work. He was actually one of the artists that motivated me to try my hand at this. 🙏

OMG I just happened to look at my uBlock Origin extension and it has blocked 5.238 MILLION elements since install. 🤯

I mean, I guess I'm not surprised, but that's definitely more than I was expecting. But then again, with some sites having over 200 tags on a single page, perhaps I should be surprised it's not higher.

Either way, thank goodness this exists. 🙏

@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@nclslbrn Well, that’s a very kind/optimistic interpretation of the situation. 😝

I wish I could remember the site; I was astounded when I saw a tag count that high. It must have been some SEO farm content or something. Crazy.

@nclslbrn 🙏 I am jealous of your worldview.

Today's task: "How do I create a WebGPU-compatible window that can be passed to WGPU across an FFI?"

It seems like an easy task that for some reason is making my brain hurt. Frustrating.

@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

Also I have 🤏 Rust knowledge, which is making everything more exciting.

I have entered a maze of twisty passages, all alike. 😅

gah Spent my entire morning recovering from a brew upgrade of libgccjit which broke my emacs installation. "Oh I'll recompile then, I guess." Nope, the version of emacs I use breaks with this new version of libgccjit, and of course you can't downgrade because that's apparently against the homebrew ethos. Had to force all of the recipes to a previous version via git so that things would compile and install, which only took like 2 hours of googling to figure out. Jesus what a mess. 😭

jeffpalmer,
@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@bostonaholic 👋 Me too. The experience has gotten really nice with native compilation, LSP, tree-sitter, etc., and use-package/straight has been a godsend for managing my config.

Hope you’re doing well!

jeffpalmer,
@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@robertoranon 🤣 I've been using homebrew for so long the drinking associations are almost completely gone from my mind.

jeffpalmer,
@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@bostonaholic It's nice because it allows you to create a "known good" configuration snapshot that you can always recreate using 'straight-freeze-versions' 🎉

Note to future self: When you pin a homebrew package, IT'S FOR A REASON! 😭

So this was quite the late afternoon/evening, so glad I repeated this tour... Took a slightly different route than last year, going up some super craggy canyon for a while (pushing/carrying the bike), but well worth it, especially once up and dipping in the 3rd lake (legs only) en route, snow patches still all around, but air temp in the mid-20s... Another reason this is one of my faves: the last 11km are just rolling downhill (~470 hm).

Some impressions attached (the last pic is of the Lech Falls near Füssen, tiny detour on the way back...)

#Cycling #LandscapePhotography #NaturePhotography #Photography #Mountains #Alps #Bavaria #Spring

A dark, smaragd green mountain lake with completely still surface. On the other side, a thin band of forest with some snow and steep rising cliffs (200+ meters) with the silhouettes of isolated trees standing at the top. More snow covered mountains (Hochplatte, 2082m) in the background...
Wideangle view of a extremely rocky and steep creek/canyon with a bunch of fallen trees and forest on the other side. Blue sky, some scattering of small clouds.
View of the Lech falls and downstream canyon entrance just before sunset. A small statue is carved into the rock face on the other side of the canyon. In the background a small observation bridge with some spectators.

👋 If you’re in the Bay Area come check out the College of San Mateo student art show May 4th and 5th in Half Moon Bay. There will be a lot of great work by my fellow CSM students on display/available for purchase. Hope to see you there!

Thanks to the CSM Student Arts Club for coordinating and Nuance Fine Art for hosting! 🙏

Wave theory? A Sophon caught in the act? Another take on the sine wave theme. First time I've played with line strength.

FYI: If you own an LLC in the USA you need to file a Beneficial Ownership Information Report (BOIR) or you may face fines.

I had not heard about this and only came across this randomly, so I'm hoping that this will help some of you get ahead of this.

If your LLC was formed before the beginning of 2024, you have until the end of the year to file.

You can read more about this and file a BOIR here (it took me 5 minutes): https://www.fincen.gov/boi

jeffpalmer,
@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@GramrgednAngel Interesting. Generally I'm a little surprised by how poorly things like this get communicated to business owners. I would have expected to be contacted directly when this requirement came to be. 🤷‍♂️

mcc, to random
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

The miserable screamy feeling when you have an error in a program, you alter the source code, you run it again, it fails in the same way, then you look at the error message and notice the line numbers have not changed and therefore the change you made was not actually incorporated into the version of the program you ran and you don't know why

jeffpalmer,
@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@mcc I routinely create copies of functions so that I can experiment with new approaches without having to use version control, and inevitably I find myself editing the wrong version and being very confused.

I make this mistake again and again but I still somehow think this is a good way of doing things. 😝 😅

jeffpalmer, to Bread
@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

I finally bowed to the bread gods and bought a seed heating mat to warm my sourdough starter and help my dough rise in my cold Northern California house. 😅

Is this ridiculous? Perhaps. Does it work? Yes, definitely. 🎉

#Bread #Sourdough

jeffpalmer,
@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@webanck My house is 68 degrees and that really elongates my rise. For the starter I’m currently making, I want 2x+ in < 12h and that wasn’t happening. Now seeing appropriate timings so I’m very pleased overall.

I was trying to use the microwave with a glass of hot water but that was a bit of a mixed bag. Honestly this turns out to be so much easier and will work for my pizza doughs and everything else. 🎉

jeffpalmer,
@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@webanck I was using the microwave as a warming box. I heated up a glass of water and then closed everything in the microwave. Running the microwave would definitely be bad!

I think we're focused on the wrong thing when we look at what tech works for a company like Amazon or Facebook or Netflix.

We should be looking at what tech works when you don't have a small army of staff engineers optimizing it. I want to know what I can scale without paying someone a half million dollar salary to do it.

There should be more case studies on things that don't have a billion-dollar company propping them up, humming along quietly on a cheap-ass VPS somewhere.

jeffpalmer,
@jeffpalmer@genart.social avatar

@collinsworth omg 100%. I used to have this conversation a lot with folks. It's true of a lot of things: the tech they use, the processes they follow, the way that they allocate time, etc.

Stay nimble, watch costs, and focus on what will make you and your team successful. 🔥
