The fediverse won’t succeed at putting up a substitute and that’s a problem?

Just an impression: All the pieces seem to be there. But what’s required is a team, with devs, PMs and coordinators, dedicated to making a particular place in the .

That’s resources and decently sized financial and organisational demands, especially to get a critical mass of users.

Is the fediverse up to that challenge? If not, is it an issue worth addressing?

Why fork though? You can still create an instance with strict rules and karma requirements (with help of new plugin system?).

iso,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

I guess the new plugin system is capable for those features but unfortunately I have to reject. I already have some hobby projects in mind but I don’t even have time for them because of my job.

I was worried about the possible high overhead of CoW in BTRFS. I guess it won’t cause much of a problem. Thank you 🙏

iso, (edited )
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

I meant using BTRFS for system and ext4 for the game folder. Why you wouldn’t use BTRFS though?

I don’t know much about immutable distros, but with a quick look, you’re probably right. It looks like Bazzite is based on Fedora atomic desktop.

Cool! Thats what I wanted to hear coz I want to do the same :)

Interesting 🤔 Can you prove that you’re a human?

Is it just Kbin, or does every fediverse service have the issue of being totally swarmed with bots advertising illegal pharmaceuticals? Is this just the result of limited moderation?

iso,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

It’s just Kbin and I hate it 🙂 Kbin has 10x more spam than Lemmy due to poor moderation.

It’s all about preference of admins. Just ask them what they’re allowing.

Why is Matrix mentioned more often than XMPP in self hosted forums?

I’m looking into hosting one of these for the first time. From my limited research, XMPP seems to win in every way, which makes me think I must be missing something. Matrix is almost always mentioned as the de-facto standard, but I rarely saw arguments why it is better than XMPP?...

iso,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

I don’t think XMPP is simpler than Matrix. With my insufficient knowledge; XMPP servers and clients have different standards. Some supports audio/video calls, some requires encryption while other maybe not etc.

Matrix has a standard set of features and all software around it built for those features. TBH I find Matrix pretty instable lately tho.

@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Yes, you can shoot me from there and you’re right but I don’t see much difference between Matrix clients. The experience is pretty common between them. Synapse is de facto standard.

I love mod tools <3 Thank you all for your efforts. The moderation is way better than default Lemmy UI and other apps. From now on, I can easily call that Mlem is best iOS app for Lemmy :)

Yes, the status is broken. The tool is working but not unsubscribing.

The source of the problem is that I cannot access the count of local subscribers at the moment. Therefore, it is not clear whether the tool should unsubscribe or not. I’ve created a merge request for this and the problem will be fixed in 0.19.4.

It looks like reddthat.com is on 0.19.4 and it’s working correctly for them now.

If you don’t use pict-rs then Lemmy will not proxy images and just use original URLs. Also, in the new version that has not been released yet, you will be able to disable the proxy via config.

Linux distro for selfhosting server

So I have been running a fair amount of selfhosted services over the last decade or so. I have always been running this on a Ubuntu LTS distribution running on a intel NUC machine. Most, if not all of my services run in a docker container, and using a docker compose file that brings everything up. The server is headless. I...

“Ubuntu added on top” you mean Snap? No thanks :)

You’ve picked a nice name :) I’m glad you didn’t choose fedipedia.

I just created an account on open.ibis.wiki and created “Lemmy” article but it’s not shown on ibis.wiki 🤔 I guess it still has a long way to go, but I think it’s a nice project 👍

iso,

Nice. I guess “Summary” is something like git commit message. I thought it more as the summary of the article :)

Nice post but hard to read. How about using tables?

head 1 head 2
body 1 body 2

like this:

<span style="color:#323232;">| head 1 | head 2 |
</span><span style="color:#323232;">| --- | --- |
</span><span style="color:#323232;">| body 1 | body 2 |
</span>

Edit: are we sure the data is correct? For example; Lemmy.ml has 16 communities over 10k. Which are linux, memes, asklemmy, technology, worldnews, privacy, opensource, gaming, fediverse, unixporn, linux_gaming, reddit, science, lemmy, selfhost, jerboa.

iso,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Makes sense :) BTW it got much better with table, thank you.
