In your opinion, name a book, movie or TV show where the ending spoils the story.

I mean, are we all just going to dogpile on Game of Thrones?

Does anyone remember ALF? This funny, cat-eating alien kids show. And one season ended with him getting carted off by the government for experiments. Then the show got cancelled and that was actually the horrific, dark ending of the entire show.

@Ink_Soul @golgaloth

It's not quite as tragic as the series ending - six years later there was a made-for-TV movie, 'Project ALF', which continued on pretty much from where the show ended.

Basically, ALF thrived in USAF captivity, running poker games from his cell and generally cleaning up, leading to a cushy life complete with enough possessions to fill an aircraft hangar.

Of course there's nefarious plots to execute him, etc. but by the end he's free, appointed ambassador to Earth, etc.

I love that show so much. Have tried to get my partner to watch it with me (despite being a mystery, I’m happy to rewatch to deconstruct it all in my head) as the performances are just delightful across the board, and I know she’d love it if she gave it a proper go…

@sayomgwtf @imalcolm

Same, in terms of not expecting to love it as much as I do. Tbh, despite being a huge Steve Martin fan in the 80s-90s I deliberately avoided this for over a year, as I didn’t want to be disappointed by something that I thought might be a bit of a late-career last-gasp thing…

I could not have been more wrong…!

But cos of that I think S2 was halfway through before I decided to give S1 a go, and I absolutely inhaled them. 😂

Have to admit the temptation to scrawl something across the windows about the owner having a tiny penis would be pretty high in that situation.

What I find particularly ridiculous with these oversized utes is that for the most part their actual carrying capacity is not markedly larger than a much smaller utility vehicle, if at all. It really is all about insecure dick-waving.

That works too.

I guess it could be clearer on-site at MONA (might defeat some of the intent/purpose though), but I have to agree with the argument that he actually is getting to experience the Art, which is the experience of being excluded, rather than seeing a couple of pictures in one room.

I've just been asked to join a long-standing TTRPG group and I am conceptually allergic to anything Meta, so of course in my case that means I got a text last night from the DM to say that I'll need FB Messenger for scheduling discussions, etc.

I've somehow managed to completely avoid all FB products until now, but looks like I'm being assimilated anyway, dammit.

I'm almost ashamed to admit I was one of those Maiden fans who completely blanked the Blaze period.

Especially as about two decades later I very belatedly realised not only do I actually really rate and enjoy the X Factor and Virtual XI albums, but also am a fan of Blaze's subsequent solo work as well.

Don't get me wrong, was overjoyed when Bruce and Adrian came back, but I really should have given Blaze a proper chance at the time...

    Iridis Alpha is my absolute fave of your C64 games.

    Having said that, I have to admit that I did bounce off it on release, but some time later a friend who really loved it encouraged me to give it another shot. So I went back and persevered and later that night it clicked for me, and I played it obsessively for absolutely ages. Looking forward to reliving that on the Switch shortly. 😎

    Yeah, it definitely front-loaded the challenge! But as you say, when you got past that, managing that complexity, or rather dealing with it in an almost instinctive way, was very satisfying!

    For the longest time, I liked Grateful Dead songs, but only performed by others

    My gateway drug in that respect was 'Deadicated' a rainforest benefit CD with various artists' covers. Standout tracks for me included Suzanne Vega (China Doll and Cassidy), Midnight Oil (Wharf Rat), Cowboy Junkies (To Lay Me Down) and Lyle Lovett's gloriously sublime 'Friend of the Devil'.

    It was decades before I began to appreciated the originals, but now I have dozens of albums/bootlegs... 😉

    What annoys me more is that Apple keyboards aren’t more durable. My iMac one after about a year of use has physical damage to two keys. Several keys have worn print. The right cursor key pinged off across the room and never quite reseated correctly. Natch, just beyond Apple’s worldwide replacement policy, and now the UK isn’t in the EU, it’s more of a fight for THIS kind of wear under the UK’s legislation. Rubbish.

    The keyboard from my iMac has been in daily use for 13 years and counting - used not just with its original machine but also as occasional external keyboard for an iPad mini and MacBook.

    Was just thinking the other day that it is quite literally the best and most durable keyboard I’ve ever had. I guess I just got lucky…? 🤷‍♂️

    @craiggrannell @imalcolm @chartier

    Yeah, that may be it. Was thinking something similar almost immediately after hitting “send” on my prev post.

    (It actually surprises me how resilient and long-lived it’s been. Esp. as when used with the iPad it was bouncing around in a backpack semi-constantly while travelling as well.)

    Woke up this morning with some exciting new screeching tinnitus tones. I wish there was more medical response for this beyond “mask the sound”. I do that using the excellent White Noise+ at night, and ambient sound had mostly been enough during the day. Not now.

    I’m hoping these sounds will fade. (I always have some tones but others can come and go.) If these are new permanent ones: urgh.

    imalcolm,
    @imalcolm@mastodon.social avatar

    @craiggrannell

    Can sympathise. Had tinnitus 20+ years - still have white noise/rainfall CDs somewhere…

    Sadly mine’s self-inflicted: years of live gigs at insane volumes where ringing ears for days was a mark of pride…

    Mine’s always one tone: a high-pitched sonic whine like an old CRT TV with the volume down. It’s ever-present but slowly faded over time to the point where now I only notice when it’s very quiet, or when reminded - your post made me “listen” for it and now it’s omnipresent.

    imalcolm,
    @imalcolm@mastodon.social avatar

    @craiggrannell @imalcolm

    I’m also committed to earplugs now, for anything above a certain volume. (I take em to every gig, and make a call on wearing or not in the first song.)

    And I do a similar thing to you - for one or two songs max I'll take them out to get the "full impact" of the sound - and usually that's enough.
