Exactly. Neckbeards love to pretend open source magically has no security vulnerabilities, and that the ability to inspect the source means you’ll never install anything nefarious.

I expect all of them to have read the source for every single package they’ve ever installed. Oh and the Linux source too, of course

hydroptic,

And this technology is what our executive overlords want to replace human workers with, just so they can raise their own compensation and pay the remaining workers even less

hydroptic,

This combined with the meteoric rise of fascism absolutely leave me thinking that I’ll probably end up in a concentration camp

hydroptic,

I doubt there’s any sort of 4D chess going on, instead of the whole thing being brought about by short-sighted executives who feel like they have to do something to show that they’re still in the game exactly because they’re so much behind "Open"AI

Trump supporters try to doxx jurors and post violent threats after his conviction (t.co)

“We need to identify each juror. Then make them miserable. Maybe even suicidal,” wrote another user on the same forum. “1,000,000 men (armed) need to go to washington and hang everyone. That’s the only solution,” wrote another user. “This s— is out of control.”...

Conservatives are a threat to stable and peaceful societies, and an existential threat to the whole human race due to their climate change denialism. As long as we continue to pretend that conservatism is a valid political ideology and not psychopathy and sadism packaged up to look like politics, they’ll continue to undermine democracy and peace until they get the genocide(s) they keep clamoring for

In the present research (N = 675), we focus on the relationship between the dark side of human personality and political orientation and extremism, respectively, in the course of a presidential election where the two candidates represent either left-wing or right-wing political policies. Narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and everyday sadism were associated with right-wing political orientation, whereas narcissism and psychopathy were associated with political extremism. Moreover, the relationships between personality and right-wing political orientation and extremism, respectively, were relatively independent from each other.

We found eleven significant correlations between conservative [Moral Intuition Survey] judgments and the Dark Triad – [narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy,] all at significance level of p<.00001 – and no significant correlations between liberal [Moral Intuition Survey] judgments and the Dark Triad. We believe that these results raise provocative moral questions about the personality bases of moral judgments. In particular, we propose that because the Short-D3 measures three “dark and antisocial” personality traits, our results raise some prima facie worries about the moral justification of some conservative moral judgments

hydroptic,

It’s funny how modern day conservatives use the term “fascism” like they think it’s negative, when they literally want everything that fascism would entail.

hydroptic,

It’s perfectly consistent, because their message is fuck your feelings.

hydroptic,

I’ve found Codeium pretty handy, especially for boilerplate-y stuff like unit tests, and it can very often “guess” what I’m going after especially if I eg have a TODO comment or something similar where I start completion. Doesn’t always work but doesn’t get in my way either, so overall it’s been a benefit

edit: note that the language you write will likely be a factor. When I tried Codeium with Julia, the results were often pretty meh likely because it’s a more niche language, but with eg Swift it’s been fine

The AfD’s obsession with the Third Reich is driving a realignment of Europe’s far right | Mariam Lau (www.theguardian.com)

Massive change is afoot within Europe’s far right. Just as voters across 27 countries prepare to go to the polls in EU elections, a split over the German far right’s allegiance to the Third Reich is driving a realignment....

This is all just optics, or “tactical” as the article terms it. There is no real difference in policy or opinion between the “new” right and the “old” right, they want the same things, but the “new” right are the ones who are somewhat smarter about eg. voicing support for fascists out loud too much – which will certainly change once they have enough power. And this is not to say that they don’t support fascists even openly, just that they do it so that it doesn’t generally end up in headlines.

Moderate conservatives are mythological creatures, much like unicorns or ethical billionaires.

hydroptic, (edited )

Conservatives can’t be trusted to serve in public positions. They will literally always ditch their principles – if they ever had any in the first place – to serve their political goals, naturally claiming that this is what “the left” does so it’s OK for then to do it too

edit: this is why any sort of jury trial for Trump is probably doomed to fail. Any conservative jurors will favor him no matter what, and will absolutely lie about their plans to do so in the selection process

revenge of the edit: so the NY conviction was by a jury, happy surprise

hydroptic,

Of course she is, but she’s also clearly favoring Trump.

hydroptic,

Oh damn, was it? I’m actually surprised at that

hydroptic,

I just hadn’t realized it was a jury trial, but that’s definitely a positive surprise

hydroptic,

And jury selection can always try to find the few conservatives who do have a backbone. I’m sure they have to exist, despite all appearances

hydroptic,

Good. Since Hungary predictably torpedoed the EU-level attempt to do this, individual member states should just follow Estonia’s lead

hydroptic,

True, and it’s usually both at the same time – if they do it it’s good, but when they claim The Enemy (ie. anyone left of the Strasserites) does it it’s bad.

hydroptic,

I believe the comment you’re replying to may have been using rhetorical devices that we humans call “humor” and “irony”

hydroptic,

Getting irony or sarcasm over text is hard. I’m autistic and more often than not I simply can’t “read” deadpan humor at all, I just take it at face value – much to the hilarity of my friends

hydroptic,

There’s already been lots of research into doing exactly that, and looks like at least one experimental vaccine already: pennmedicine.org/…/penn-researchers-develop-exper…
