I've made it through another term at the coalface, and I'm so, so tired. I have a heap of marking that I should have done but haven't, as always. I just think, fundamentally, in teaching - we need more prep time and less contact time. 10% is not enough. I feel that statement needs those obnoxious clapping hands, but I'll resist. I've made it through another half term - a long, dark, difficult - half term. But there's been lots of good stuff too. A student who painted something amazing for me to pass onto an absent colleague. My Yr 11s bringing in props and costumes to film revision material for one of our texts. Fighting for a dyslexia screening, and ultimately a diagnosis, for a Yr 9 boy who didn't understand why school was so tough for him. Having quite the phase of reading feminist YA fiction. 'Blood Moon", "The Eternal Return of Clara Hart" and now this: "The Burning" by the incredible Laura Bates (the creator of the #EverydaySexism campaign). Really interesting dual narrative of a young girl experiencing sexual shaming at school and online - with the past story of a young woman accused of witchcraft. I try to be very positive and cheerful about my profession: teaching. It's a fluffing tough job and you have to see the best in it - every lesson, every day, every student. And it can be the most rewarding and important job a person could do. But, my goodness, today was a challenge. When your leaders don't seem to care about their staff and are actively making it more difficult for you, you just get worn down. But. Tomorrow is a new day. I'm definitely late to the party on this - and I haven't seen the TV show - but I have just sat and devoured this in pretty much one session after it being recommended by a student. "Lessons in Chemistry" by Bonnie Garmus really is incredible. Amazing characters and such clever, clever writing about the roles and experiences of women in society. I think she's dying... 😢 And I'm crying. She hasn't stood up today, she smelled , and had her shower laying down.

She's nearly 18, once a tiny feral rescue, she always considered me her dad. Her eyes usually look in mine , and she winks

Her eyes never opened until now.

I've been rocking her in my arms wrapped up in a towel.

She moved once, then drifted away.. very listless.

If she doesn't pass without pain, I will have to consider putting her to sleep anyway.
