I don't generally watch cable news but I've decided to turn on Fox News at this moment to see their coverage of the verdict as a Zen exercise.

Many people in the US are disengaged from politics -- they don't know a fascist from a farmer...

But TRUST matters, and 's 34 convictions make him untrustworthy to the somnambulant middle.

It's a massive hill to climb to get suburban families to say "okay, yeah, there are no laws -- let's overthrow the system for this huckster."

People can be stupid, but they don't want to be seen as that stupid, that gullible.

hankg,

@DoesntExist That would be amazing if it turns out to be true. Watching the Fox News coverage of this right now it is a funhouse mirrors version of what is going on.

I am all for responsible use of local LLM. No vendor to date has shown any sense of responsibility in the usage of their models either. I don't trust MS/Apple/Google to remember to tell us when these things start phoning home later. Hence why I'm pissed about Apple's OpenAI announcement

Well my plans for having a productive evening and not having a drink tonight are now out the window for sure...but at least for a worthy celebration. Of course there are appeals processes, he may try to pardon himself if he wins in November etc. But fuck it I'm going to enjoy the moment.

hankg,

@Nigel_Purchase I totally get that. He's tried lots of things that he shouldn't be able to do and as we've seen with the likes of Aileen Cannon, Alito, and Thomas, he has a cadre of judges to bend the law into whatever contortions he wants. Let's not get into what he's talking about doing with the DOJ and all the Project 2025 stuff he and the MAGA operators are salivating about. Hopefully it is a theoretical and he loses in November.

hankg,

@Nigel_Purchase There is at least a coin flip probability of that yep, while still losing the popular vote by wide margins for the third time in a row.

On the bright side, May 30th was also the day the RMS Titanic was launched. As we know, that worked out well.

@shoq @Yorgus It's the date of the launching of the superstructure. There is a picture from the event on Wikipedia even! Pretty neat! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanic#/media/File:Titanic_launched_at_Belfast.jpg

Report: Apple and OpenAI have signed a deal to partner on AI

The deal has parallels to Apple's infamous search deal with Google.

Still trying to process the ChatGPT/Scarlett Johansson voice thing

Maybe I have a bad read on Her (2013), but wasn't that movie meant to be really fucking sad? I watched it once, and definitely didn't walk away from it thinking, "ah, maybe someday!"

hankg,

@healyn Silicon Valley culture nowadays is making sci-fi dystopias reality because there are countless billions they can make and billions of people they can lock into these contraptions. Ah well at least a handful of people can have more money than god

I hate how whenever US liberals defend immigrants they have to say how hard working they are. I just want it to be known that I support immigrants who are just as lazy, if not even lazier, than me.

hankg,

@rebeccawatson Ironically we have Schrödinger's Immigrants as our CW thanks to MSM being led around by the nose by the right wing. Simultaneously taking jobs from Americans while also doing nothing but suck down welfare and government handouts.

Want to get back to blogging, a self hosted corner of the internet that I own myself, where I will meticulously log an account of all my days that no one will read except one weird stalker, and later, bad faith actors who will comb my words looking for evidence that I am bad actually, before finally perishing to the annals of the Wayback Machine, where generations to come will look back for evidence of those that came before them, but never stumble across mine specifically because my SEO was bad

hankg,

@germ Sounds like my Hugo static generated blog trying to score as low as possible on the 512kb Club list :) 512kb.club

The challenge with a federated DeviantArt platform will be payments, if they can offload that to a 3rd party by allowing users to add links to the store, it could work IMO

Otherwise, each instance would have to host their own Stripe payments account, and other complexities

Not to mention, giving Apple/Google Play 30% of the cut

In @pixelfed, we're handling this by allowing users to add links to specific items that redirect to 3rd party platforms

We can do this, watch me 😎

#notJustInstagram

hankg,

@pixelfed @dansup The third party route seems to be how PeerTube is doing it too.

@bkoehn@diaspora.koehn.com:> I did a checkout in our club’s Piper Saratoga (PA-32R) for the first time since 2020 and it was a stark reminder of how quickly you can get into trouble. The Bonanza has a similar engine but is much more vulnerable due to its slick airframe.

Pure serendipity that I finally decided to watch "Lost In Translation" for the first time, been in my queue for weeks, the same week that OpenAI decided to steal Scarlett Johansson's voice for their Her-inspired voice system. #movies #OpenAI

I recently joined a gym. That's given me about an hour a day of Fox News exposure. As bad as I thought it was, it is far worse. The biggest news events coverage were about how illegal immigrants are behind the unprecedented crime waves afflicting all cities. Meanwhile crime is now back to pre-pandemic levels and even at its pandemic height was still at multi-decade lows. Also, Democrats are giving illegal immigrants free housing, food, phones, and laptops. Why? "Oh you know why..." Readers get to fill in the blanks with that sort of lede. Then we had the completely political hack attack on Trump even though he's never done anything wrong, a major scandal around Hunter Biden's congressional testimony and Fauci's assistant's testimony around something else. That's the big news. The right has a profitable multi-billion dollar industry, far beyond Fox News, to propagandize. There is no counter-balance. And don't say the supposedly liberal MSM. AT best they are led around by the nose by the right wing media and politicians. At worst they have similarly sympathetic coverage when it comes to things like properly addressing wealth inequality, monopolies/trusts, and holding rich powerful people to account. #rant #uspoli #msm #foxnews

A week with the Chevy Blazer EV shows things to love—but also painful flaws

The decision to drop Apple CarPlay was a mistake.

hankg,

@arstechnica Not that it actually matters but I did send a letter to GM saying explicitly that while I was interested in some of their vehicles I will not buy a car without CarPlay. So until they add it back their vehicles are not going to be on my list of things to look at. That goes for any other car company too. As long as there is one reputable car company making cars with CarPlay that's the one I'll go to.

hankg, to ai

I mean that's great that they agree to this but they already have pursued AI with reckless abandon and see zero signs of changing that. I'm thinking this is going to be more like Climate Change agreements: not good for more than wiping your ass with it. neowin.net/news/microsoft-open…

Back home after a very busy week in San Francisco. I spoke with @caseynewton, @mmasnick, @harrymccracken, @laurengoode, @chrismessina, @Markoff and so many others. In an age where the old web is gradually getting killed off by AI, there is still hope for the future in the shape of the fediverse.

hankg,

@Gargron @caseynewton @Markoff @laurengoode @chrismessina @harrymccracken I saw @mmasnick post about having some conversations with decentralized network people. I'm glad Mastodon/ActivityPub fediverse is being represented too. Too many times in the past year the dais has plenty of VC backed initiatives and zero from the fediverse.
