@gruber I think your frame on the union/tip thing is off. The union knows how offensive the tipping idea would be to Apple and that it's a bad idea, but it gives them a something to bargain away at the table that isn't in their non-negotiables. It's also a wedge to align them with other underpaid labor more than with Apple's famously well paid product staff. Only when negotiation is done will we know if it was a dumb ask, but framing them as stupid sure feels like a PR move to discredit them.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@hellbox Don’t you think the Ocham’s Razor explanation is that the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers negotiators have no experience with premium/luxury retail?

And what’s the message this sends to all the other Apple Stores in the U.S.?

Apple says unions will spoil their careful curated retail experience.

Union proponents say it won’t.

The first union store asks to pester customers for tips.

This take is annoying.

But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".

How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?

No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.

That story isn't being told.

@MetalSamurai @gr0k @shoq @atomicpoet That’s the path to a lowest common denominator experience for everyone.

Bluesky is going to skyrocket to mainstream popularity and actually replace Twitter, and Mastodon cannot, because Bluesky is being designed to be simple, fun, and — most importantly — easy to understand.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Charles it’s just very obvious when I compare my two feeds. I go to Bluesky, and I see people goofing around and blowing off steam. I don’t see that on Mastodon.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@stooovie @thoralf Maybe that is a good thing, actually.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@schmidt Why? The whole endeavor is to correct the mistakes of Twitter.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@danilo My as-yet unused analogy:

Mastodon: library

Bluesky: combination coffee shop / bar

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@buzz Another analogy: No pool tables in the Mastodon bar. Why? Because at the Twitter bar shitheads were getting into fights and breaking pool cues over people’s heads.

The problem wasn’t the pool tables.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Bryan Exactly. What’s Hot is a great and essential feature.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@schmidt Mastodon cannot solve the problem of multiple instances -- that's a feature in their mind. I go to your post's permalink on the web at xoxo.zone and I can't favorite or bookmark or reply to it. It's a mess by design.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@shauny I don't see it being a problem from what I understand about what they're building.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@bergmayer @buzz Bluesky has it exactly right: both chronological and a fun useful "What's Hot" feed.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@jon @thoralf Nobody cares.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Gte @buzz Well it is for me and you, of course.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@MyOpinion All I’m saying is that Bluesky is going to achieve mainstream popularity and Mastodon will not. People aren’t looking for “freedom”, they’re looking for something nice, fun, and simple.

Mastodon is like desktop Linux in this regard.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@patak @elk Zealots. (And I agree Elk is a much nicer web interface in numerous ways than Mastodon proper.)

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror There’s a place for both, which is why I’m carefully not saying Bluesky will prove “better” than Mastodon, just orders of magnitude more popular.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@TruthSandwich @CartyBoston Facebook is not in decline. They’re still gaining users.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Octarine @codinghorror No, I’m not saying it’ll be better. I think Mastodon, so far, is better for nerds because mainstream users aren’t here.

The Union Representing Apple Store Workers in Maryland Wants to Prompt Customers for Tips on Purchases
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2023/05/04/apple-store-maryland-union-tips

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Mulderc @oscarjiminy Insould wager heavily that Apple Store employees do not want tipping. They’d be embarrassed. Don’t ask for something even employees don’t want, and which the employer is never going to grant, and which will turn the public against your unionization efforts.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@laloreyes Correct. I myself would tell people to go to the Verizon or AT&T store instead.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@oscarjiminy @leoncowle The public will see this in a negative light, as will (I suspect) Apple Store employees at other stores.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@lesspopmorefizz That’s not what they’re asking. They’re asking for a prompt at checkout for every purchase. Also: the correct policy is to require employees to refuse all tips.

16 years in and iOS still doesn't have this feature that MacOS (née Mac OS X) has had since it launched 22 years ago: “Learn Spelling”.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@capbri That’s @marsedit, one of my favorite and most used apps of my entire lifetime.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@dmnelson I do know that but it’s a terrible solution to this problem.
