This is my fun social media account, I will post a lot of video game stuff (mostly old or cloud gaming) and some work stuff.

If I post an image with no Alt text it is because the image is just there for decoration and doesn't provide any extra meaning to the toot.

gpowerf,

@nithou @Sonikku to me discs in 2023 in general seem weird. I know people like collecting games but using optical drives now on a new device is kind of like buying a new car with a hand crank start.

Game devs say Riccitiello leaving Unity is a step in the right direction

But some devs urge caution while other Unity board members are still in place.

gpowerf,

@arstechnica I think it's dead, there's so much damage done no resignation or restructuring could fix it. I do not wish the people who work for Unity any harm, I do hope that they are not financially impacted, but at the same time I just cannot see how trust can be regained.

I have been thinking lately.. if there is any significant distinction between humans and other animals I wonder if it is not "consciousness" or even "intelligence" but rather simply that we have a separation of conscious and subconscious minds. It seems to me that most animals are just a direct expression of their subconscious with no conscious component acting as a filter. Or at the very least their conscious component is greatly minimalizaed

gpowerf,

@freemo I think that it is a fascinating question to consider whether or not animals have a separation of conscious and subconscious minds. We know that some animals are capable of complex thought and behaviour, but it is difficult to say for sure whether they are doing so consciously or subconsciously. An octopus can solve complex problems, but is it doing so consciously or through a series of impulse decisions?

I think that one of the challenges in answering this question is that we don't have a clear definition of consciousness. What does it mean to be conscious? Is it simply the ability to be aware of one's own existence? Or is it something more than that?

gpowerf,

@freemo so the subconscious is a coprocessor of sorts to the conscious side? Interesting idea.

gpowerf,

@freemo I get it. I don't experience that, or I should say I don't consciously experience that :) maybe it is happening in the background and I don't know.

gpowerf,

@freemo I've had interesting meditative-like experiences, but I may write about them someday when I am ready. Not yet.

Microsoft, quietly, has published a guide on how to download and install Linux.

No... Seriously... It is not a joke...

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/linux/install

The article was published September 29, 2023 (9 days ago).

The guide provides every option available, too. Starting with using their Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), to using a Virtual Machine, and even on "Bare Metal" alongside Windows.

That's right, Microsoft now tells you how to dual-boot Linux. 🤯

gpowerf,

@Linux_Is_Best this is just part of the long and very slow journey to dumping the Windows NT kernel and adopting Linux as the kernel for Windows. That's why WSL exists, MS recognises Linux is needed for a lot of real life work and can't obviously dump Windows as we know it now quickly, but they can slowly integrate it with WSL, then move towards having Linux as a kernel with a compatibility layer to run legacy Windows software and eventually dumping it altogether.

Anyway, I may be wrong. But I've had this suspicion for a while.

A few comments on my latest video seem to paint a very depressing picture of how poorly people understand the political spectrum.

People saying these anti VPN laws are why the left shouldn’t be allowed to govern:

Sorry to tell you this, these laws are being passed by our current French government, which is absolutely right wing (some would say center right, but let’s be honest, they’re passing laws our far right has been dreaming of for decades).

The left is opposed to them.

gpowerf,

@thelinuxEXP For context, the UK government is centre-right to right-wing and they've been pushing to end end-to-end encryption for years. In general, I don't think politicians can be trusted to be custodians of technology, no matter where they sit in the political spectrum.

gpowerf, to opensource

No matter the country, it's a given that politicians don't understand technology. This has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever read. RISC-V has the potential to change the computing landscape and benefit humanity overall. Part of the point of going open source is to bypass these sort of political shenanigans, and it shows that politicians pushing for this fundamentally misunderstand #opensource. Any collaboration ban between one country and others is bound to hurt that one country more than others, the knowledge is out there, and no petty politician can stop humanity from progressing together. #riscv https://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/technology/us-lawmakers-want-to-block-china-from-american-risc-v/ar-AA1hQnNv
