I'm not horny. It's just that I think it would be incredibly practical to distribute my workload across a fleet of identical clones who, by all appearances, are typical employees with all their faculties, but are in fact in a constant receive-evaluate loop; all transforming orders, directives, metrics into productivity at my behest, in my image.

I will not be voting in the UK general election this year.

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

@Xantw0 I mean I can't vote in it either, so making the choice of not voting in this election feels like a pretty morally conscious one

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

to be clear, I'm not eligible to vote in that election anyhow, I'm just stealing @zip's bit where she gets people super upset at her for not voting in the US election

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

@WGAvanDijk It is very nice for them that they can vote further left than Labour without risking further Tory rule, I must say

@zip@wandering.shop avatar

Vote left of Labour. There's never been a better chance to vote third party without risking a Tory government and in the worst case even if we get the cunts for another five years they'll have the slimmest majority and the Labour Party will have had a solidly spanked arse and we might get someone other than a Tory in a red tie running the party for 2029

All my jaded homies in the tech industry are understandably done with computers and would like to throw them into the ocean to make a new artificial reef. But things lately have made me think: They are horribly misapplied and wrongfully allocated. Computing power should serve the commons, and one thing no force in the world can diminish my passion for is weather surveillance.

We all know AI/ML is just a fancy statistical model often used to imitate and replace humans. But why?

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

The usual suspects, the GFS, HRRR, NAM, and ECMWF have been missing a select few crucial events this year that have caught people by total surprise, which experimental ML models such as the CSU-MLP have picked up on, and I think it might have to do with how these traditional models are more tooled towards how we would ordinarily expect things to work. But with climate change being what it is, we are treading into uncharted territory.

xan,
@xan@xantronix.social avatar

Let me be clear: I don't give a rat's ass about how AI/ML can serve me personally, and any Big Tech applications of it should be viewed with suspicion as purely speculative, cynical gambles at the expense of everybody who's not an executive nor shareholder. But meteorology, where we've never deviated from a philosophy of using models as merely guidance for what may happen next? It's the perfect, and I daresay likely foremost, application.

We already have the perfectly normalised dataset anybody could possibly dream of: The entirety of NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information archives. For instance, NEXRAD products date back to ~1991. They've even compiled upper atmosphere soundings from across the globe into one place, in the form of the IGRA! (All of this is freely accessible to the general public, by the way, on demand.)

Found a lovely Microsoft serial mouse to go with my . I might do a light modification to it to have it plug directly into the 200LX with a shorter cable. Why? Wouldn't you like to know.
