I find that most of my game dev can't easily be done via test driven development, but some components can be, and I really enjoy using https://github.com/bitwes/Gut when I can.

Right now I'm coding the logic for the family tree interface in the game and it's been a joy. I have a lot of confidence in the APIs and it's much faster to run a bunch of tests than boot the game and click around every time.

A data set of one, but: I recently bought an induction burner hotplate to see what cooking on it was like compared to gas.

Other night I made Chana masala, which required blooming a heap of spices. My indoor air quality monitor hardly changed, AQI went down a couple points.

Next night we cooked Indian again, this time on our gas stove burner. AQI went down 20 points, chemicals shot through the roof.

Burning propane indoors seems even worse than I thought.

eviltrout,

@mathowie curious if you were running the ventilation fans at the time?

The newest season of Gamechanger is just incredible. I know Dropout has a small and loyal following but I feel like it deserves to be much more popular than it is.

Pascal was the second programming language I learned after BASIC and I really loved it.
By the time I got to university C/C++/Java had won out but I kind of wish they hadn’t.

April 5th, Puzzmo and our crossword editor Brooke Husic are presenting Crossword Con (https://www.crosswordcon.com/)

While there are many crossword tournaments, there is no crossword conference. We aim to fix that!

Brooke has put together an amazing list of speakers.

Crosswords are so much more than daily puzzles, they are a vibrant amazing community — come join us!

eviltrout,

@helvetica this is cool and I’m going to try and come but I have to say a little more notice would have been very helpful!

Philosophically I like mastodon the most of the social networks, and I even run my own instance. However I am a little disappointed in how little it has improved over the last year. We still have no QTs and it’s frustrating to click on a post and not see all the replies nor the correct like counts.

Content wise it’s fantastic for game development and other hard core nerd stuff, but it has so few journalists and comedy compared to Twitter and I miss that. It seems they’ve all moved to Bluesky.

Just threw out expired cold medication, and realized I’d not taken it in 4 years. Take that, random jackass in my building who told us masks don’t work!

I have reached the "maybe I should give hentai games a shot" level of desperation in my life. I'm not happy about this.

eviltrout,

@codinghorror just get a ps5 and last of us 2 already! You will enjoy it.

Happy to announce that since February 1st I'm now Principal Product Manager on Substance Painter. :D

eviltrout,

@froyok it’s one of my favorite pieces of software

A quality bidet is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend it. 🚽💦

eviltrout,

@codinghorror you’ve changed! I remember you making fun of @samsaffron for his bidet

eviltrout,

@samsaffron @codinghorror @tenderlove for the record I have a Toto bidet at home and it’s amazing. And when I travel going to the bathroom is significantly worse

3D game assets can be large (I’m looking at you, substance painter) and while Github supports LFS the extra fees add up quickly.

Instead, I installed gitea on my homelab and I’ve been very impressed with it. It’s got a great UI and all the features I need, plus it’s smoking fast on my local network.

Animation and rig done with , and render done with 🥐🥖🥞

video/mp4

eviltrout,

@aenderlara I’m curious why you rendered in Godot instead of blender itself? Is it meant as a game asset? (Love it btw)

Once, a former (bald) co-worker of mine came into the office and excitedly said that his friends had given him a new nickname over the weekend: “Shitty Bruce Willis!”

eviltrout, to random

In 2023 I really learned my way around Godot and Blender. There’s still a lot to learn but I feel somewhat competent now and I can get things done.

In mid 2024 I plan to release a game on Steam… but surprisingly it won’t be The Secrets of Skellig! I’ll have more to say about that in the coming months. (Skellig is still going to happen though, just a longer timeframe.)

The best part of 2023 was going to DisneyLand and LA with a bunch of friends. The worst part was breaking my elbow.

I should have realized something was up with the Santa story when every year he would use the same wrapping paper as my parents.

I have a room graph set up but because of the way it carves rooms with a random walk, rooms can become connected apart from the graph. This is making locked doors and key an issue since the player can often sneak around locked doors. Not sure it's a real issue yet. It might play fine.

eviltrout,

@grumpygamer nice is it in dinky? Or c++?

the NYT’s dogged insistence that they invented connections, a game so blatantly copied that they even copied the name, is so bizarre to witness.

eviltrout,

@helvetica I wish the journalist pressed them a bit on what “mechanics” are unique.

Just lost my mind learning that the new songs in Wonka are from my #1 favorite songwriter Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy), and the score is by his frequent collaborator Joby Talbot (inspiration for our son’s name Joby).

SO YES WE WILL BE SEEING THIS

eviltrout,

@cabel did you see Lola? His music is in that too and it’s worth a watch.

I'm just delighted to see that Godot, the game engine I spend all my time in these days, is now using Discourse, the forum software I co-founded and spent a decade of my life hacking on.

I am in awe of how much effort goes into a bobby fingers video, like this one where he makes a photorealistic boat in the shape Jeff Bezos’ head.

it feels good to get a technical thing done that you thought would be 100000 times harder but ended up actually being pretty easy 💪🤓

eviltrout,

@alienmelon That always seems to be the case, and then the thing you think is easy is 100000 times harder so it evens out.
