Putin's "landslide" is a new totalitarian milestone

#Putin's election win is a dramatic expression of a new political reality
There is no longer room for even the illusion of opposition: this is part of a project to prepare the population for war
🇩🇰 🇪🇺 🇺🇦 #AndersPuckNielsen is a military analyst and Navy Commander at the Royal Danish Defence College. He studies #Russia's military since long before the 2022 invasion
#Putin's decision to win with such big numbers (87%) is a deliberate choice to shift from an authoritian regime to a totalitarian one, from putin demanding the Russians "Let me do whatever I want" to "You'll have to do whatever I want".
The prospects are grim, the protests were minimal (even in comparison to #Belarus): #Putin is now more emboldened to expand the war.
Much of the analysis of the reshuffle in the Russian government seems to be missing how much it is about coup-proofing Putin's regime rather than making smart decisions for Russia.
#Khrushchev once said that one of his greatest accomplishments as leader of the #SovietUnion was when he promoted #Malenkov to director of a hydroelectric power plant in Kazakhstan and #Kaganovich to director of a potash works in the Urals: he didn't kill them, as #Stalin would have done in his place.
A gay Republican politician in Colorado was apparently shocked by a recent email sent out by state party head Dave Williams, which called LGBTQ+ people “evil” and “woke creeps".
Ten years ago on March 4, a group of unarmed Ukrainian soldiers led by Col. Yuliy Mamchur marched towards armed Russian soldiers who were blocking the #Belbek airbase.
🇺🇦 'If the United States and its allies can rush to Israel's defense in the skies, shooting down dozens of drones and missiles fired by Iran, why can't they do the same for #Ukraine — which has suffered under Russia's missile attacks for more than two years?'
“Russia finances its military from oil exports. You can’t persuade countries like #India and #China to stop buying it. So you knock out Russian #oil refineries. You can do a lot of damage to the Russian economy.”
"About half of #Russia’s $420bn export earnings last year came from oil."
"The attacks have another advantage for #Ukraine’s hard-pressed military. They have forced Russia to move some air defence assets away from the frontline to defend newly in-range cities"
Can someone tell me if there are wars (or military operations) involving the #UnitedStates, in which #Israel soldiers partecipated as allies of the #USA? 🤔
The war in #Ukraine has put to the test two strongly-held tenets of the #ColdWar: the strength of #Russia's Army and the strength of #USA's commitment to its allies.
A potential war in #Europe was supposed to be decided by which one would have been the strongest.
We witnessed how the Russian army wasn't really so strong: but what about the strength of US commitment?
What is stronger?
🇪🇺 💥 Battle related deaths in #Europe, estimated by #UCDP
The chart shows how many deaths related to wars have been in Europe since 1989
🇷🇺 #Russia has been the country most involved in these deaths: about 20.000 in wars internal to russia (mainly in #Chechnya), and 175.000 in external wars (🇺🇦 #Ukraine, 🇬🇪 #Georgia, 🇲🇩 #Moldova)
Then the wars in 🇧🇦 🇷🇸 🇭🇷 🇽🇰 former #Yugoslavia with 57.000 deaths, and in 🇦🇿 🇦🇲 #NagornoKarabakh with 14.000
