It feels like my life has been turned upside down by the recent addition of a black pug puppy.

Comparatively, raising three human children over the last three-plus decades was a cake walk.

Watching Linux distros (and yes, it is usually Debian packagers who act the most sanctimonious) shoot themselves in the face and then insult upstream AND the users of a popular package under the delusion that only the distro's self-declared experts are capable of making decisions is always a good reminder as to why you will never be able to waterboard me into using Linux as my primary desktop. Very sorry this is happening Team KeePassXC. https://fosstodon.org/@keepassxc/112417353193348720

@film_girl Fascinating read… seriously.

I’ve been around the block a few times with security folks and, let me tell you, this kind of dismissive discourse is far more common than you think.

Moreover, it has nothing really to do with open-source, per se. It’s just that we get to see (read) the back-and-forth that is otherwise obscured behind the walls of most corporations.

I'm tired of people using the term "podcast" when I can't find it at the place where I get my podcasts.

drwhitt, (edited )
@drwhitt@mastodon.social avatar

@davew So, Dave, I was right there with you and when I saw this I said to myself, “Look! There’s a Spotify logo!”

But I was wrong because this podcast really has downloadable feed URL (.rss) usable in any podcast player.

It’s interesting because many people are podcasting while,
it seems, many corporations are simpl, to put it bluntly, skimming.

A tricky part of being a solo developer is that there is nobody to review my code. So a trick I've developed is to do a review myself but in a different tool from my daily Git setup. The context switch helps me to pretend I’m analyzing someone else’s work.

Previously I'd export diffs into Kaleidoscope, but I recently discovered Juxtacode, which works better for me. It’s a Git-native Diff tool. I can easily pick any 2 commits to compare and navigate changes. Recommended.

I don’t like all the ads for betting on sports tv. I find it offensive and it scares me, especially knowing that a lot of kids are watching this stuff

drwhitt, (edited )
@drwhitt@mastodon.social avatar

@davew 💯

It’s gross and way beyond TV and radio broadcasts.

Here’s the Apple Sports app’s Summary page for today’s Marathon Monday Sox game.

Do I really want or need the betting odds displayed above the fold? It is, almost literally, the last bit of information I need about this or any sports event. Who is making these design decisions?

Also, relevant to your specific comment, it is listed as appropriate for ages “4+ Years Old” on the app store. Really?

Edit: Clearly, I’m incensed by this.

I find it very frustrating that App Store Connect leans on Dun and Bradstreet for a bunch of their business verification requirements. Anytime I interact with that company in ANY way I will then receive a steady stream of solicitations and spam for weeks to come, both in emails and phone calls.

My most recent interaction with them to update things for the new DSA requirements has started this barrage back up again.

let's imagine you're resolving this merge conflict (in screenshot).

You've forgotten which code comes from your current branch and which one comes from the "other" branch. How do you figure it out? Do you:

  1. remember what the "top" and "bottom" parts correspond to from past merge conflicts?
  2. remember what HEAD means?
  3. read the last line of the merge conflict?
  4. run something like git show main or git diff mybranch..main to see the diff?
  5. enable diff3
  6. something else?
drwhitt,
@drwhitt@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk Without considering other aspects, it seems that one always wants to take the second (>>>) change as this represents local changes. Why, with the exception of maybe another (recent) commit on the remote on the exact same line(s) of code would one want to discard their changes?

We're back to this again.

/It is not the user's fault that SpringBoard craps up your launcher with stale app thumbnails going back to the dawn of history./

This is and has always been Apple's fault, and it’s beyond silly to complain that users are doing the wrong thing. They're not.

It's Apple's decision to clutter the launcher, to keep stale thumbnails for months and years, and to tie discarding thumbnails to force-quitting instead of a lighter abstraction. Bad UI
