Is there a Mastodon client that would give me the markdown from @apps and the link badge from @phanpy?

Screenshot of a toot in Phanpy showing a link badge

dominicsayers,

@apps

Thanks for the reply! There are an impressive number of settings!

Can you clarify which one turns on the link preview? I tried "Display previews in all messages" but it didn't seem to affect anything.

@cheukting_ho Do you know of any official Python professional certifications? Or ones that are accepted by the community as being valuable?

I'm looking at encouraging my team to pursue some training leading to recognised certificates.

No coffee yesterday morning because my milk frother refused to work, with a flashing red light and an unusual noise. I took all the bits apart, and cleaned them, but nothing coaxed it back into life. Then this morning I tried rebooting it, and of course it worked straight away.

Chastening that I forgot that even a stupid milk frother is now a bug-ridden computer system, with all the inscrutable malevolence of a printer...

dominicsayers,

@Jermolene If you can't have coffee without a milk frother then there are too many dependencies in your codebase.

Speaking as a lifelong member of the Sam community, I wish to distance myself from all of these high-profile Sams and their idiotic fuckery

dominicsayers,

@pikesley happy there are fewer Dominics in prominent positions these days

Meet Cecilia.

Turned up desperately ill, dehydrated and starving on our doorstep a while ago.

Now recovering well from major surgery to remove a huge polyp (hence the still slightly closed eye), thanks to Cats Protection's help.

We've agreed she can move in permanently. 🐈

She and Napoleon will be introduced slowly. Both are pretty un-territorial, they'll adjust to each other.

No way we were going to leave her without a perma-home, after she'd already been abandoned once as a kitten. #cats

My favourite platform in a London station is platform 3 at Canary Wharf DLR.

Trains to Stratford mixed in with trains to Lewisham (the complete opposite direction) at 2min intervals at times.

God tier shenanigans.

dominicsayers,

@garius Three platforms where the train doors open on both sides offers the theoretical possibility (not yet achieved by me) of crossing from one side of the station to the other at platform level in one go.

What's the technical term for when you start measuring something to evaluate it, but then that shifts over time to people trying to meet the target not to do the actual thing.

Happens a lot in schools with exam results.

I know there is one.

dominicsayers,

@garius Gaming the system?

HS2 is not (really) about speed but about capacity - and, yes, there is a need for more rail capacity between south/midlands/north.

But there is also an equal and opposite need to be environmentally mindful, and there is also an absolute need for competent project management and critical political overview.

From any view, HS2 is a horrible mess.

dominicsayers,

@davidallengreen Environmental mindfulness is not opposite to HS2. Its construction will have an environmental impact, to be sure, but the consequences of not building it would be worse for the environment.

dominicsayers,

@davidallengreen I read your post several times before I commented and have read it again since your reply and I cannot see how my point is anticipated by it. Apologies for my obtuseness.

dominicsayers,

@davidallengreen I can see what you intended now, thank you for the helpful note.

Anyone know if Shetland’s mobile backhaul uses radio links which may somehow suffer in bad weather, which is what I assume is also killing the Inmarsat?

Small boats is a disastrous policy for the Tories to have hung their hat on. If they don't stop the boats they look like losers. If they do stop the boats (they won't) then it becomes clear that all the problems they blamed on migrants are still there and their "fix" was bogus.

I do not follow cricket closely, but I love some poets.

And so whenever I see "Steve Smith" being mentioned my heart leaps, because I think it is about Stevie Smith.

My single character domain name is coming up for renewal.

Trying to work out if I can transfer it to a cheaper registrar.

Read the story behind it https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2020/08/buying-a-single-character-domain-and-3-character-fqdn-for-15/

dominicsayers,

@Edent Turns out I actually own a 2-character domain at a shrinkable TLD: https://al.㏉/

I didn't know about this decomposition before - thanks!

dominicsayers,

@Edent I think they have to have a few months left in order to transfer them easily (IIRC) so don't leave them until they are nearly expired.

I just moved the first of my Gandi domains to @beasts as an experiment, which went well. The 12 months renewal was added to the existing registration period so I didn't lose $$$.

My plan is to move one a month so as to keep the cash flow manageable. Might take a couple of years!

dominicsayers,

@Edent Never found a good use for it, but might give myself a very short email address now you helped shave another character off

Why, oh why, is my arm killing me today. Is this part of the whole process with broken bones. Arrrg!

This really puts me off "doing anything", which is, in itself, also very annoying. I and not good at "not doing anything"... I'll have to learn.

dominicsayers,

@revk I'm 6-7 weeks ahead of you in recovery and can confirm there are good days and bad. Mainly good but my consultant said there might always be days when there was "a bit of an ache".

Opioids aside, painkillers are your friend. Take them after meals as often as you're allowed.

Bah! Tried to give blood but couldn't.
Apparently travel to Cape Verde a few months ago puts me at risk from malaria.
And my iron levels are too low.

What is really bugging me, not the pain in my knees, leg, wrists, elbow, chest, and so on, no, what is really bugging me is that it was my own stupid fault.

I tripped over my shoe laces.

If you don't know, these Salomon cross hike shoes have a pull cord thing for laces. It works well. Well, if your arm is working well enough to pull it.

The bit left over. I did not know what to do, I poked in a loop in the shoe. Worked on my old ones for years.

But came out this time and tripped me.

Designing for non-rectangular browser windows

How I miss the days when phone manufacturers were innovative. Nowadays everything is just a boring black rectangle.

https://twitter.com/towernter/status/1522461031615848450

I imagine that this (concept) device would probably just put the browser only on one row / column. Probably sensible, but utterly BORING!

Let's imagine

dominicsayers,

@Edent This made me think of the Wasp T12 but now I look back it had a boring square screen
