2024 is the year I step out of my comfort zone. ๐Ÿ˜ถ

I'll share insights from my master's thesis on #AccessibilityOverlays, which I've worked on over the past one and a half years. My talk details the impact #accessibility overlays have on #usability and #UserExperience.

I find older adults who just look into the air during their 3+ hour train ride fascinating. They do not even read a book. Just wait for the train ride to be over. How?! And why, tho? Donโ€™t they know the concept of getting bored? ๐Ÿ˜…

The FFG Austria shared insights into their monitoring of 2023. The top detected issues, including 2 new ones, were:

  1. Info and relationships
  2. Non-text content
  3. Name, role, value
  4. Logical order when using a keyboard
  5. Visible focus (new)
  6. Text contrast
  7. Keyboard (new)

@Piciok showed us how blind gamers play with a live session that had me invested. He highlighted that besides audio descriptions, different sounds for (interactive) elements are essential. They are what make games not only accessible but more fun and faster to play than others.

Today is a good day. 160 pages and 45k words later, I handed in my #a11y #overlay #MasterThesis. It is quite extensive and combines a technical analysis, user testing and expert interviews.

Not sure what I'm going to do now while I await the grading and defence. Maybe try that "relaxation" everyone is talking about, haven't seen it in a long time. ๐Ÿ˜ถ

@MoritzGiessmann same for me, it crashes constantly, takes a long time to load and I donโ€™t get notifications. But I still havenโ€™t lost hope that it will get better but I guess Iโ€™m forced to buy an alternative app soonish ๐Ÿ˜…

Iโ€™m currently trying to move countries within Europe, but the process is just ๐Ÿซ 

To get a bank account, I need a certain number assigned by the government. To get this number, I need to pay a fee at a bank. The bank doesnโ€™t let me pay the fee without a bank account. ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ™ƒ

I'm happy to announce that my received a from the AK Salzburg! ๐ŸŽ‰

I'm so grateful because it enables me to give something back to all the study participants who gave their free time without any compensation due to the limited financial possibilities. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

The thesis investigates the impact of on and for individuals with visual impairments. Findings will be published in 2024.

Had an interesting discussion yesterday with a small business owner (3 employees) complaining about the they have to comply with and pay for.

"There will soon be new EU regulations for accessible websites I'll be forced to comply with and pay for. How should I afford that? If it is important for the state to integrate accessibility, why doesn't the state pay for it?"

I see several problems here.

  1. IMO, you need regulations to facilitate change. But at the same time as enabling them, money should be invested in raising public awareness and educating developers, designers, managers, etc...

The sole responsibility can't just be put on a business owner.

Websites exist in various #languages. Setting the "lang" attribute on the <html> element helps users and #AssistiveDevices, as browsers use this information to offer translations and correctly pronounce words when converting text to speech.

I'm out when a webinar forces me to download and install their particular software that no one else will ever use again to watch it.

So many other options are already available (like Zoom, Teams, Twitch, etc.). People probably already have those installed or can join in their browsers. It's that simple.

Love it when companies market product features that still need to be implemented. ๐Ÿฅด

I conducted an interview for my #a11y #MasterThesis where the answer to my questions of whether they assure Y or Z is, "Oh yeah, that's so important! We do Y and Z (maybe in the future). It is so important. Good that you mention it (but we need to check if we can and want to actually do that). Thanks for bringing that up! We promote #accessibility." OK ๐Ÿ™„

โœจ Collection of menus that left me gasping for air โœจ

I was looking through solutions to a coding challenge (simple home page) participants submitted.

I found:

  1. a div wrapping buttons
  2. a div wrapping multiple h1s
  3. a div wrapping spans

Don't you all know how to code a proper navigation??

How to code a proper navigation:

Start with your <nav> element. Inside, use a list (<ul>) and links (<a>). Don't use buttons for on-page navigation!

What else?

  • add a descriptive link text
  • don't write text in all-caps; use CSS for that
  • when you have multiple <nav> elements on your page, add an aria-label to each of them

@schrotie If your menu has multiple links, you should use an <ul> to group them. This adds structural information to assistive technologies and makes content more easily understandable.
