A friend calls and asks what I’m up to. “Not much,”I say, “just desecrating a flag.” The cheery little flag they hand you at the citizenship ceremony, which I’ve been using as a cat toy since I choked down my oath in July.

But it’s not a desecration, at least I don’t think so. You can’t desecrate something that isn’t sacred, and how can this flag be considered sacred? When so much violence, and so many lies, and too much hypocrisy, has been and continues to be enacted in its name?

No. This swatch of fabric is not sacred to me, I think, as I stitch and, with each stitch, try to memorize ten names—just ten out of the hundreds, the thousands, the soon-to-be tens of thousands if we don’t, if we won’t—

The trees, the soil, the fields, the flowers (decimated and desecrated in this human-made, U.S. funded erasure) are sacred. All life is sacred.

This flag isn’t sacred. Life is sacred. But we don’t seem to know that, and we have so very lost our way.

    @lunalein @bookstodon With fiction, I usually don't love when the author reads their own work, but I loved Louise Erdrich's narration of her novels 'The Sentence' and 'The Night Watchman' - her voice is so soothing and her dry humor is wonderful. I also loved Maggie Gyllenhaal's reading of Anna Karenina, and Virginia Woolf's 'Orlando' read by Clare Higgins.
