Random question: is there a good open source tool out there for making animated vertical videos? Something that you could use for making Reels or Tiktok videos?

Preferably web-based?

If not, I might have an idea for #Pixelfed stories ๐Ÿ˜…

Therapy session in just a few minutes, finally. Iโ€™ve missed my last few, but it feels good to connect again.

I feel like Iโ€™ve been dragging my own body all the way to the weekend. Iโ€™m almost there.

Sometimes, a bad memory can tear open an old wound that you thought had long healed. You wonder to yourself whether things could have been different, if you had made better decisions. Your mind teases you of what could have been, as your morosely gaze into a deep abyss of failure.

You think about what it would take to be reborn and start again, but your head is clouded, and your body weak. The dream lives on in you, but fear and sorrow just keep you down. To move a finger is to lift a mountain.

I canโ€™t shake the feeling that my involvement with #Diaspora ended in failure. I know that it was forever ago, when the tools and technology were much more limited. Seeing the state of the project over the past eight years breaks my heart.

I was young, dumb, and sure of myself. I thought I could see the future, but I had no idea what it looked like. Most servers are a ghost town, and the project is a sad bloated husk where bitter men go to shave their yaks.

I just wasnโ€™t who the project needed to put it in the right direction.

Sometimes, I think about downloading a copy, setting up a test environment, trying to fix all the things that are wrong with it. Iโ€™m a shit programmer, though. People tell me Iโ€™m smart, but I just talk smart. Iโ€™m really just an idiot.

Even so, Iโ€™m not sure my patches would be accepted at this point, if I could make them. I think some of those bridges are far too burned to be crossed again, and the people running it have no interest in being dragged kicking and screaming into the rest of the Fediverse.

It just hurts. I dream about starting my own project, but I donโ€™t think Iโ€™m smart enough.

Maybe Iโ€™m just being pessimistic. My antidepressants donโ€™t always seem to work, though they make a lot of things better.

I have a lot of ideas, some of them good. Itโ€™s just easy to get caught up in your own head, and let fear prevent you from doing some of the things you really want to do.

When I die, I just want to know that my life was worth something, that I did something great and was part of something beautiful. I think Iโ€™m on my way with some of my efforts, but Iโ€™m not sure how to get past this blocker. My biggest fear is that nothing I do actually matters.

@ShredderFeeder Iโ€™m not much of a philosopher, but I would guess that most people are lonely and want some level of connection and validation, or maybe they just feel like itโ€™s a good way to meet new people.

Maybe itโ€™s just fun.

deadsuperhero,
@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@ShredderFeeder I think you have it exactly backwards. I think a core motivation for a lot of people is not to elevate themselves above everyone else on a platformโ€ฆbut instead, a desire to connect, and laugh, and experience things together.

But in order to do that, you have to put yourself out there.

I think itโ€™s less โ€œpeople want to see meโ€ and more โ€œI want to do something fun with other people online, but in order to do that, I need to be seen.โ€

Also, while Tiktok is not necessarily my cup of tea personally, itโ€™s a legitimate tool for discovery, from music to books to cooking techniques to political organizing. Short-form video is a medium of a newer generation, and Tiktok just happened to be a place to use it extremely effectively. I hope we get something similar in the Fediverse, as an alternative.

@torsten_torsten Hey Torsten, can you explain what you mean by this? Chatrooms are one feature that both Owncast and PeerTube support that allows people to comment on an active stream.

deadsuperhero,
@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@Frisk I take it that you mean you want to use hardware to encode it, but avoid doing encoding a second time over the stream.

Unfortunately, I wasnโ€™t able to find much on the subject, beyond a couple of forum posts. It seems that video passthrough in this configuration is not currently possible with tools like OBS Studio? It seems that, for the stream to exist and get parsed by the server, encoding is a must.

Running my own news site is amazing and fantastic and has provided incredibly opportunity for growth and learning....

...and also reinforced the idea that I really just want to be a writer, not a manager or an editor.

I'm not doing any grand search at this moment, but if you're trans and would want to be involved in an up-and-coming trans news site in a non-writing capacity (grant writing, fundraising, managing, editing) putting it out into the universe that I wouldn't hate hearing from you.

Best of luck with your siteโ€™s journey. โ™ฅ๏ธ

While content is federated currently, #identity isnโ€™t. And while that doesnโ€™t diminish the decentralized nature of the #fediverse, having a single identity โ€” that a user fully controls โ€” would make it easier to sign up for multiple apps. @mogul Solid is a really interesting technology, but there are some serious upwards hurdles when it comes to bringing that technology to an established platform.

The first is that Solid doesnโ€™t use a database in the traditional sense. Instead, Solid apps read data directly from a Pod, and that data is basically in a special format called Resource Description Framework. Itโ€™s possible to create a queryable graph using RDF, Linked Data, and SparkQL, but: itโ€™s not Postgres.

The other issue is that one Pod = one User. Sure, you could theoretically spin up hundreds of thousands of pods for Mastodon.social users, butโ€ฆthe juice isnโ€™t worth the squeeze.

deadsuperhero,
@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@mogul To be clear: integration of Solid and ActivityPub is a worthy endeavor, and people are doing it! But, itโ€™s easier to start from the ground floor instead of a massive, painful, never-been-done-before refactor.

Itโ€™s just a harder path, using tools and an architecture that are very different from how most Fediverse apps (or apps in general) work today.

Hey, got a #Flipboard related question!

We finally got accepted as a Publisher (yay!), and we have a LOT of articles that fall into different categories. Our site is able to generate all kinds of RSS feeds, and we have special topic hubs set up in a number of different ways.

Is it better to just have one magazine for the whole site, or should we split off into different magazines - one for the Fediverse, one for Bluesky, one for our Podcast, etc?

Just want to follow best practices here. Maybe @mike has an opinion? ๐Ÿ˜

    @pfefferle Looks great! I was able to hit the translate button in my app and read it in my mentions! ๐Ÿ˜

    I think part of what I am proposing is not just a fallback mechanism, but a way for publishers to decide what their content looks like for different kinds of platforms. I donโ€™t really have a word to describe what that is yet.

    But yeah, Mastodon could handle this a lot better, if they wanted to.

    deadsuperhero, to random
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    Iโ€™ve been running this thing in some form since almost 2016 or so. Since then, Iโ€™ve written 120+ articles and helped produce all of our podcast episodes, all while running all of our social accounts.

    Itโ€™s not sustainable forever. The only way to level up at this point is to stop hoarding this project as a solo effort, and open up to others.

    I think we have an opportunity to build something really unique and great together. My hope is that, after we receive our 501c3 classification, we can begin crowdfunding and begin outreach to foundations for grants. I want to be able to pay people to work on this!

    I need some help,

    We need to better incorporate our Mastodon feed into the CoffeeGeek.com website.

    Part of the problem is, in the platform we use (Wordpress / Elementor), there's almost zero support for Mastodon in our share, follow, and embed tools. So either we have to write something from scratch and make it work with our existing share tools, or... well if there is an Elementor / WP friendly share plugin out there that actively supports mastodon, I want to know about it.

    Any thoughts? Ideas? Guides? Step by step to make it happen? The research I've done so far shows it's tricky to have a proper share popup for Masto like you can have for Facebook, for eg (second screen cap below) because of the decentralized nature of mastodon.

    For instance, I want to have a Mastodon share button in this cluster, which is created via a convenient widget in Elementor:

    Share Popup for Facebook

    deadsuperhero,
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    @thisismissem @coffeegeek for a while I was using FediEmbedi. Iโ€™m not sure how well it would work with Elementor, but I seem to recall it can embed Mastodon feeds.

    Might be a bit outdated, but could prove to be a good starting point?
