I used to babysit a lot, and I was kind of famous for getting kids to try foods they normally wouldn't. I was never pushy about it, just included them in the shopping/harvesting/cooking process, and asked them to try a little bite of everything, and to remember that your tastebuds change as you age, so keep on trying stuff.

This backfired on me occasionally though. Once as an adventure, we went to a Japanese restaurant, and I ordered the kiddos some Katsu (who doesn't love something fried with dippy sauce), and got myself a plate of sushi rolls and sashimi. Well, since I always asked them to try one bite of something new, they looked at me expectantly, so I let them try a bit of each. Turns out they were all in for sushi, and those little nerds ate most of my plate, and then they always wanted to go. Kids, I don't have sushi money every day!

@RickiTarr Dude, word! Honestly, it seems like kids, regardless of culture, invariably love sushi if it's introduced early with no judgement. Like, I'm a lifelong Michigander, as are my kids; they've hardly ever even seen the ocean, let alone caught a fish, and they LOVE sushi.

Does anybody know if there’s a traditional composite material that behaves something like fibreglass? As in fibre/fabric laid up in a binder of some sort to make a stiff material in arbitrary forms.

Paper mache is one but it’s too weak (I think, maybe there's a super version?). I'm considering things like cotton or flax in casein glue or pine resin... but I doubt it will work.

(And my last casein glue experiment stunk like rotten milk for weeks!)

@john Casein-based glue? I feel like folks used to get surprisingly robust results with textile/fiber and a paste made mostly of maybe evaporated milk? It was a 60s/70s theater thing.

I found this thing lying on the sidewalk yesterday. It is atrociously marketed as a disposable vape.

There's not much to it, but it has a usb-c port, so it must have a rechargeable battery. It also must have some kind of heating element, a reservoir for The vape juice, and some way of knowing to turn on the heating element when you're inhaling

@MLE_online @48kRAM Isn’t that an electret element? If so, sucking would cause variance in the capacitance, which would generate a small AC voltage. Couldn’t you use that and a transistor more or less like a relay to switch in your heating element for as long as the electret is generating current? Or am I confusing electrets and piezos?

@girlonthenet I had a similar idea once for a county fair attraction: a big paddock full of all kinds of dogs. For $3 you get to throw three hunks of cornbread at the dogs. For $5 your dog gets five minutes in the paddock. EVERYONE IS A WINNER!

I just learned this recently from my Christian friend Christina and as a good #ally I want to pass it on!

It turns out that #Christmas is NOT the Christian Chanukkah, and Christmas does NOT have the theme of military rebellion against an oppressive foreign power.
