Should've been Croatia or Ireland, but whatever. At least it wasn't horribly mediocre like Israel or France.

I draw my grandmother a birthday card with a different bird every year. Chose an American Kestrel this year, and I think it turned out pretty nice.

  1. My husband's mass was benign. This is news from yesterday, but it's still sinking in today.

  2. Today was our best post-surgery day yet. Better sleep, better eating, better mood, helped in no small part by (1).

  3. I feel like we'll get through this.

Janet Reid, a literary agent who blessed a generation of baby writers with Query Shark and who was also extremely kind to me the only time I met her, has died. We won't see her like again, I don't think, and the world is worse for it.

Times have been shit lately, but I feel good about a few things today, so it's time for Three Good Things.

  1. Husband's cancer surgery is one week out, and it cannot get here quickly enough. Feels like we've been waiting forever, and finally we're getting close to taking care of it.

  2. Got the yard work done before the rain tomorrow.

  3. The giant hobo spider in my garage has been banished. From life.

I would like my groceries to arrive soon please, so I can have a damn shower.

I've done basically all my chores today: sheets and blanket (busting out the spring weighted blanket!), baked a lemon chiffon cake (it's cooling now), swept my bedroom as part of the slow plan to reclaim my sanctuary, took out compost, loaded and turned on the dishwasher...

I'm a rockstar and now I'd like to be a less sweaty and dusty rockstar.

@MsHearthWitch Any luck with the espresso machine?

darkbeth,
@darkbeth@mastodon.social avatar

@MsHearthWitch Wonderful! I've been looking forward to seeing it.

I almost slipped down the espresso-aficionado hole a few months ago just researching coffee grinders. Apparently, that hole goes very, very deep, so I backed out (and that's about the time shit happened anyway), but I am still curious what you went with. I might have to splurge sometime later.

darkbeth,
@darkbeth@mastodon.social avatar

@MsHearthWitch Aha. And I see that olive option you mentioned. Are you happy with the color in person?

Anyone else put off things they really want to do, play, read, experience because you're "Saving it for a rainy day"?

Meanwhile it's a fucking monsoon outside and has been for months (or years?)

darkbeth,
@darkbeth@mastodon.social avatar

@MsHearthWitch I grew up hovering just above the poverty line, and when I was in my early teens, a lady came through selling cosmetics and gave me a little sample kit of a hand scrub that made my hands feel inhumanly soft and amazing.

I saved that little kit for 5-6 years because I decided it was too nice to just use on a regular day. It needed to be for something special.

By the time I opened it up, the products had all gone bad.

That was a formative moment for me.

@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

Aaand right as I was feeling really sad about going back... I got an email from Williams Sonoma that my espresso machine shipped!

YAAAY. I'm so stoked. I got a beautiful olive green one. I can't wait to share pics.

I deliberated for a while. Because it's A Color... and I struggle with like just falling into that white, black, stainless steel modern kitchen look.

Realized tho, that's not the kitchen I want. So I bought my first Colored Appliance Thing. LOL!

darkbeth,
@darkbeth@mastodon.social avatar

@MsHearthWitch Happy for you. :)

And I'd like to see those pictures.

I had that struggle over my Kitchenaid mixer. I really wanted the light green one, but I got the white one with the sparkle sheen, reasoning it would go with anything. Still wonder if the "happy" of seeing it would be higher if I'd gone green though.

darkbeth,
@darkbeth@mastodon.social avatar

@MsHearthWitch "Frosted Pearl White," they called it. It doesn't show much in the sales picture, but if you look at it close up, it's almost like very fine glitter sheen.

My husband walks somberly into my home office, stops, and stares at me for a few seconds as I stare back.

"What?" I ask.

"It's almost the weekend!" he says, starting to smile.

"You were so serious, though!"

"It is serious!" he answers. "It's the weekend!"

In a surprising twist, THE EXPANSE has become one of my comfort TV shows.

I just... I love this show.

Tried the books, they didn't quite grab me, a little too real. But I will try them again at some point for sure.

darkbeth,
@darkbeth@mastodon.social avatar

@MsHearthWitch @tindomiel4 I agree.

I've read all the books, and while I don't regret going through them, the actors, music, and artistry in the show were what really transformed the story into an experience.

I just wish they'd finished out the show. The books continue the story far beyond where the show ended.

#ThreeGoodThings

  1. I survived work today, and there were calls (so, so many calls). But I lived. Counting that as a win.

  2. The ice storm graciously waited until late afternoon to roll in, and although it is absurdly dangerous out, it is also very pretty.

  3. Drafted the first 1,600 words of a book I've been mulling for a few years. It materialized in first person, and I am not at peace with this development (I dislike first person as a reader), but it's a start.

#ThreeGoodThings

  1. It snowed. I fucking love snow.

  2. Finished season 1 of Ahsoka with my husband.

  3. I am not a cook. I have a very limited repertoire, but I am trying to learn more. I made poached cod in dill sauce tonight for the first time, and it turned out great.
