It's very disappointing that potentially as many as 60 million US citizens may lose their affordable Internet access because the US Congress has politicized things and so far failed to act:

Go, Woz! On CNN, Steve Wozniak was asked first about Apple's situation but then about the proposed TikTok legislation. He called out the hypocrisy of pointing at one app when so many others have issues. He noted the need for privacy protection that applies to all apps rather than just one:

@MorganGeek @randulo Yes, rather than grandstanding about specific apps for political points, it would be great if our folks in the US Congress would actually look at passing comprehensive #privacy legislation that could be used to protect us with all apps and services.

But that would require people to work together... and right now that does not seem to be happening in our Congress. 🙁

The tale of a snowstorm: 1) yesterday evening: 2) this morning; 3) mid-day; 4) this evening. 🙂

Up to about 10 inches (25 cm) and it seems to be slowing down…

@jessamyn Oh, cool! I’ll have to look tomorrow and see if the data is refreshed! My brother lives down near Rutland and they got over 20” of snow!

As part of the ongoing #eclipse fever throughout northern #Vermont, UVM Health Network reminds us that no all “eclipse glasses” are the same: https://www.uvmhealth.org/healthsource/eclipse-viewing-dos-and-donts

danyork,

And people here in northern #Vermont are very concerned about what will happen if hundreds of thousands of people drive up from New York and southern New England to experience totality. Amusingly, one article points to the mess that happened 20 years ago when Phish had their massive event up in northern VT:

https://www.vermontpublic.org/local-news/2024-03-20/phish-crowds-overwhelmed-vermont-highways-in-2004-how-is-the-state-preparing-for-eclipse-traffic

(I would argue the eclipse is a bit different in that it’s not a single location… but the point is valid about our roads)

Waking up this morning to about 4 inches (10 cm) of white stuff, with more falling from the sky. Let’s see where we end the day at!

I have been going to bed around 9pm for the last two weeks and it's downright scary. I am quickly approaching old territory.

@Adam_Cadmon1 I wave to you from deep inside that territory. 🤣

@Adam_Cadmon1 I am looking forward to watching it. The books were SO complex that it will be intriguing to see how they adapt it to the screen.

Nice to see the continued growth of this count of Mastodon users… (subject to all the usual caveats about any metrics like this trying to count a decentralized system)

There are some great threads about git and version control systems off some posts by @b0rk - she summarizes the results below (so far) of why people like git, but the threads are worth reading. Some interesting points about why people use git and version control systems in general.

Dear Apple,

Can you PLEASE stop turning my links into “previews” when I am composing an email message? I don’t want that. I never have wanted that. I get that you think you are “helping” me, but I JUST WANT TO POST A RAW URL. That’s it. Just a link address.

And yes, I know in the Mac version I can get a down-arrow to convert it to a plain link, but that’s a pain, and not easy in IOS.

I just want URLs.

Thank you,
An email user (who, yes, has gray hair and has been using email for 30+ years)

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@stirrell42 whoa!!!! I swear that was NOT there before. Either I completely missed it or Apple added it at some point! Thanks for pointing that out - that is exactly what I need to turn off!

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@stirrell42 Interesting.. it turns out that I do NOT yet have this setting in either of my 2 Macs. BUT... it turns out I haven't applied software updates yet... so I'm doing that now.

I did, though, find it in IOS and so can now change this on my mobile devices.

THANK YOU for letting me know this option is now there!

Huh... I didn't realize that somewhere along the way X restricted access to public tweets/posts to logged-in users.

I noticed this when viewing X profiles from a browser where I was NOT logged in. Then I went to https://twitter.com/danyork - all it showed me was my one pinned tweet (amusingly telling people I'm more active on Mastodon 🤣)

In another browser where I was logged in, I could see all my tweets/posts.

I did not realized there was this change in behavior.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@cstephens2 Interesting! I guess I must just have always had browsers signed in on the few times I visit X/Twitter lately. Thanks for the link to the article.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@spv Yes… someone else clued me in that it happened back in June 2023. I guess I have just always been signed in and so only noticed it now! 🤦‍♂️

Anyone else who uses WhatsApp finding themselves added to a bunch of cryptocurrency investment groups lately?

Pretty much every day I'm hitting "Exit and Report" on another one.

@trechnex Ahh... I should go check that out. I don't use WhatsApp all that much, so haven't really customized any of that.

i've been hearing a lot from folks on here who are frustrated with git (for many good reasons!)

but I'm curious about the opposite perspective: if you've worked with more than one version control system over the years and you prefer git, I'd love to know:

a) what other systems have you worked with? (hg? svn? p4?)
b) why do you prefer git?

notes:

  • please no replies about why you think git is worse
  • interested in answers other than "because I have no choice"
danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk
a) RCS, CVS, SVN, git.. and I recall briefly having to use both perforce and clearcase

b) the single biggest thing I like about git is being able to work locally and offline. I can get on a plane, do a bunch of work and commits, and then sync them when I am back online.

The other big thing for me is not being locked into a server (as with cvs or svn). I can use a hosted system like GitHub, but I have the security of my local repo - and can always upload it to another service.
