WWDC Wishlist 💻

A new entitlement for Live Activities to get guaranteed indefinite background execution.

Then apps with very long-running local tasks (like video export) can do it in the background and SHOW PROGRESS.

Why tie it to a Live Activity? Because they’re always user-initiated, always visible, and can always be cancelled! Less opportunity for abuse.

Why an entitlement? Because this is a special case. Most Live Activities are network-bound and should use push notifications to update.

Instagram does this! Theirs is a background upload task, which is covered by existing API, but still.

Let's normalize Live Activities for signaling to the user that things are still happening in the background. It stinks to be left wondering if your download paused just because you switched to another app.

Maybe I’m being silly, but every long-running user-initiated background task deserves a Live Activity.

Only when it’s a user-initiated task. And only when it’ll take more than a few seconds.

But sometimes I add a new podcast and queue the download of their entire back-catalog! I’d like to be confident when I close the app that the downloads are continuing.

Is it me or the hurdle to running macOS on iPad mostly that you can’t log into iCloud on virtualized macOS installations?

And that’s a hurdle because…

Policy? Something to do with the Secure Enclave? Other?

Ran into this exact Xcode Cloud issue with my visionOS app.

I’m working on a project with an important launch animation that only plays on the first launch. Unfortunately, when people install the app via TestFlight, the “what to test" sheet obscures the animation. Has anyone found a way to detect when the sheet is dismissed? #SwiftUI

@michaelsteeber I haven’t verified this yet, but I’d check Environment .scenePhase and restart the animation when transitioning to ScenePhase.active.

Even if it doesn’t solve your specific TestFlight sheet issue, it’d be a nice addition in the case where someone launched the app and got interrupted by something else/locked their phone/whatever.

@schwa Maybe AVP related. Maybe people whose Apple ID is in more than one dev team. Maybe people concurrently signed into more than n devices.

So many ways for it to hit everyone in my mastodon feed without being technically widespread.

Dunking on the Humane Ai Pin is too easy.

I’d sooner dunk on the Apple Watch because we should be able to point at that, and ask why you’d ever want a lapel pin to do its job.

We should be able to say it’s the perfect device for people who want to live a phone-free life.

    @schwa From friends who loved the books: the show was a disappointment and glossed over everything that made the books interesting.

    I haven’t read it, and thought the show was whatever. But their reactions made me want to pick up the books.
