@0x00string sorry to hear. Some days just suck. You'll get through it.

In response to Microsoft's announcement of a "copilot" key to launch their AI engine*, I am working on a line of keyboards that includes a DF key, which when pressed, will insert a context appropriate image of a dumpster fire into whatever you are working on. If you are working on code, it will do nothing, since it's probably already a dumpster fire.

*if it really were truly AI, wouldn't it already know that you needed its help?

    cienmilojos, to IBM

    IBMers,

I have a couple of questions as my curiosity and interests have been leaning kinda towards mainframes.

    1. How are mainframes utilized in 2024?
    2. How does the mainframe business work? I am assuming large contracts for hosted services?
    3. Is there enough growth career-wise to merit a segue from another tech related position into mainframe support?
    4. Do I have to learn COBOL?
    5. Are there any other companies providing similar hosted services at scale?
    6. Are there any resources available to learn up on Z/OS and any other services IBM provides? (For free?)
    7. Can we be friends?

    Any info is appreciated.
Hats off to all the humans supporting the BIG COMPUTERS.

An encrypted Linux system that include an unencrypted swap partition may experience all sorts of sensitive information that gets passed to swap that survives a reboot. Best practice is to encrypt the swap partition as well:

    #linux

    cienmilojos,

@dwarmstrong This is a thing? Everyone doesn't automatically do full disk encryption? Is there a benefit to not encrypting swap? Lots of folks are using 16GB of ram typically or more is swap even necessary in modern computing?

    cienmilojos,

@dwarmstrong Also.....bless you sir, for your non-bloated website that has a color scheme that doesn't burn my retina.

So....I've ready very little about the Substack situation....listen, I realize there are a lot of radicalized ideals today. Some extremists on both sides with opinions on political, social and religious topics that would make me lose my lunch, but, FUCKING NAZIS? No!! NOPE!! I may get shit for this but that is one thing I will not tolerate. FUCK NAZIS. Anyone who allows them to have a platform IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MESSAGE OF HATE THEY SPREAD!!

I was a bit slow on silencing mastodon.online on Infosec and a bunch of DM spam slipped through. Apologies.

I continue to be squeezed by both sides of the threads situation. I am operating on the premise that people who think I’m a terrible person and this is a terrible instance for allowing any interaction with threads have left and/or blocked, those remaining seem to want to either have nothing to do with threads at all and are mainly concerned with their data, and those who want to seamlessly interact with threads. I have threads limited/silenced on Infosec.exchange, but that isn’t seamless, and it’s also not fully blocking. So, here’s my proposal:
I remove the limit from threads, and run a job to domain block threads for each account. Any account who chooses can undo the block (or ask me to do it) and then they can seamlessly interact with threads, and those who want nothing to do with them get their way.

    Thoughts?

    cienmilojos,

@jerry I appreciate you going through all the extra effort to keep all these people happy. Most of which don't contribute financially or even post anything of interest outside of reposted news articles from hackernews. I don't think this is a problem that should be tackled from the top. Everything I've read shows its blockable on user end. The beauty of this platform is people can move if they don't like it.

Jerry, you don't owe anyone anything. Don't allow yourself to be misled of swayed by these crybabies.

Microsoft announced a new Windows Protected Print Mode (WPP), introducing significant security enhancements to the Windows print system.

    cienmilojos,

@BleepingComputer 3rd party printer drivers blocked.....unless its the HP Smart App that they randomly install on Windows whether you have an HP printer of not. Also secure printer drivers don't mean good printers drivers, but hey, one step at a time.

I have threads silenced on Infosec.exchange, .town, and fedia.social. That means people here won’t see stuff from threads, but you have the option to follow and interact or outright block the threads instance.

There are some, though, that are hyper opposed and not finding that to be sufficient. Hypothetically speaking, if I were to create another instance that did hard block threads (activitypub, DNS, firewall, etc), would what would be the type of instance would you like to see?

    cienmilojos,

@jerry I don't mind being able to see threads. I think people are kind of blowing this out of proportion. If anyone has used Mastodon for any given period the most they might see is a boosted post from someone they follow or someone else on the instance. Concerns about Meta being a data vacuum are moot as Mastodon posts are public and could probably just be web scrapped anyhow.

Wow ! Just messing about in the #FreeBSD14 live image on my #ThinkPad P14s Gen 1 AMD and although it's a read only system I've managed to connect to my test open WiFi network. Please note this is only live briefly for research. But it proves that the Intel AX200 WiFi card works so far on an open network.

    cienmilojos,

@jerry @melroy I'm leaning the opposite direction. Used and supported Windows for years, finding desktop Linux more stable and simpler to manage. (A few distros are like this, Linux desktop en masse is still a hot mess)
