Janik, to NixOS

What sucks a lot about the whole situation is that the nixcon na and nixcon eu teams are different people and the people currently planning nixcon eu were not involved with the sponsorship decisions for nixcon na but everyone (understandably) now thinks that we repeated the mistake..

chfkch,
@chfkch@ruhr.social avatar

@Janik
They may be different people, but i cannot believe they live under such big rocks that the NA folks did not hear about the EU drama.

hl, to emacs

At work I have to do a lot of development in an on browser based IDE, which means no nice #emacs movement shortcuts like I'm used to, and moving around the code is painfully slow. The IDE does support #vi movements though, which I've been trying as a 'better than nothing' solution, and yeah, it's still hard. I don't think I'll ever get used to the logic of: if "h" is left/back, then "j" is down, and not up. Arghhh.

@hl
I feel you. Considering to swap those in my local setups, but then i run into problems elsewhere again.

any nix folks have an idea how to debug this? direnv with a use flake .envrc file fails on macOS, at line 3331 of "eval" with an unexpected semicolon

edit: full output https://gist.github.com/fasterthanlime/60b93196e0854e62e3561dfb72cc1970

edit 2: the same exact flake + direnv set up works on Linux right now.

edit 3: re-running '/opt/homebrew/bin/direnv allow' fixes PATH (absolute path needed since homebrew gets yeeted out of PATH)

edit 4: nix print-dev-env generates the mountain of bash I'm looking to debug right now!

What is the rest of this output?

I write test cases because testing is mind-numbing and boring and I prefer handing that over to comrade computer.

But, hey, if you‘d rather do this youself, as I can see in repositories, who am I to deny your fun?💁🏻‍♂️

chfkch,
@chfkch@ruhr.social avatar

@icing
I think writing test cases helps understanding the process. Or at least helps verifying that you know the process. But often a developer alone cannot write cases for non-technical aspects.
Sure, it is tedious, but if done right, it enables some kind of gamification in you work. Try to reach that state and you will be rewarded.
Don't just write tests so you pass coverage 😁

Just checked my #BitWarden - I have over 1,000 passwords stored in there 😱

Should I go through and delete the ones I never use?
Or should I just ignore the obsolete ones?

@Edent
I bet it is even easier in #NuShell. At least better to read.

There is also this:

Very nice overview. I agree on most of the points. I must admit i have not tested it as in-depth as you did.

I also tried to import a graph from my org-roam Zettelkasten directory, but the some links were working in the visual analyzer and some were not, though the links in the pages were correct. Did you try something similar as well?

Due to weight and impact force distribution it is highly more likely to hit the back tyre.

I once saw a post about a #selfhosted fitness/activity website similar to #Strava, but i cannot find it anywhere here nor on the web. Does anyone know? I think it supported uploading your track files for cycling, running and more.

    I remember the time when i had a better connection than all of my friends (or any at all). So they let me download stuff for them, say a 3 MB patch for a game.
    It was faster for the to ride 1 hour to me by bus, copy the file on floppy and ride 1 hour back. Good times.

    Day 2 of searching for a job

    Man it's hard to get a coding job if you have never worked before it seems. I have nothing to show compared to others, despite being a good programmer myself. I think. I have worked on a bunch of technically impressive projects such as writing a DS game in rust, allocating the function stack in the heap, an algorithm that generates mazes, my very own shell and some others.

    Despite all that, I have no experience with Bootstrap, Angular, Django or whatever so no job.

    I don't understand why some #WebDev "professionals" often use only ready-made #CSS libraries for website design. No, not everything is easy but, for example, creating #links so that users can see how they lead outside the #website is standard in my opinion.

    I have illustrated it for clarification. You can of course change the #logo's to other UTF-8 characters or position according to the desired #design ;)
