Last week, one of my favorite covid-aware posters bailed off social media because they were attacked for being "Ableist" after righting pointing out that covid causes brain damage.

"You say it like brain damage is a bad thing."

It is! That's not a value judgement on people who have brain damage, but it's not ableist to say, "you should avoid having brain damage if you can."

WTF are we even doing?!?

“Tailwind, and the death of web craftsmanship”

I’ve wondered too about the field’s refusal to reevaluate tech, sticking with ideas about CSS, HTML, and JS that haven’t been correct for a while now, and the lack of curiosity about the foundation we’re building on https://pdx.su/blog/2023-07-26-tailwind-and-the-death-of-craftsmanship/

@baldur I will never get past the whole value prop of Tailwind being "the cascade sucks"

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@baldur So much this. Utility classes absolutely have their place, but what they do is... no easier than just writing CSS.

I don't believe this was Anna's original point, but this includes wearing masks at indoor events.

If you're on stage unmasked talking about accessibility, you're doing it wrong. You're not being inclusive to folks at high risk or with chronic illness (which includes everyone who's already had covid), and you're practicing eugenics, a key white supremacy policy.

I find it impossibly challenging to know how to live in a world surrounded by people who show me everyday by their actions that they want me dead.

You do not care. You have no moral compass.

I know you will kill me or leave me severely disabled if I let you. If I weren’t already resisting with everything I’ve got it would already be happening. Especially this week in Spain at

Fuck all of you who have such little regard for other people’s lives. You do not have the right to eliminate me.

Serious question, please no Musk bashing (fuck him, but that's not the point here):

It's been almost a year since I was banned. How's web dev Twitter doing? Similar how it used to be? Completely different? Are there good discussions happening? How are my grifters 💪💫 doing?

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@davatron5000 @matuzo this is spot on! plus a handful of earnest people who haven’t moved to other platforms and don’t seem to have sent doing so.

Agree that Masto has much better content now, with slightly harder discoverability.

Regarding “back to the office”: Why is the commute the employee’s burden anyway? Make it part of the work time and have at it requiring people to come to the office. Three hours commute? You get 5 hours in the office.

Employees are available immediately at home but if they’ve required in the office, the clock starts when they leave home. You rent their time, your choice to spend it on travel.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@finestructure I did this at a job once and was SWIFTLY reprimanded for it.

Constant Contact told me we could talk about remote work "once you get settled." I got settled, then was told, "Oh, we don't really do remote work here."

I quit a week later.

I guess I am a bit weird. But when you get solar electricity effectively for free, can use it yourself at home, maybe even store it in batteries — didn't you already get enough? Why all this fuss about selling the excess electricity? Just give it away to your neighbours, for free. Whatever gets used locally, reduces the problems on the grid, which is often used an excuse by Big Electricity to refuse to buy solar electricity. 1/n

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@jwildeboer

  1. It helps recoup the cost of installing the panels.

  2. Depending on where you live, you will over produce in the summer months, and under produce in the winter. Selling that access back to the grid offsets the cost of drawing from the grid in the under producing months.

  3. The electricity companies in the US also charge you a fee just for the pleasure of being connected to them, whether you actually use any electricity or not.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@jwildeboer We have solar panels to generate 101% of our electrical needs, but won’t have “free” electricity for another six years.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@jwildeboer we also have a big roof that gets tons of sun, and wanted to add more panels to feed the grid just as a public service.

But if you send too much electricity back to the grid relative to what you consume, the government treats you as utility, rather than a consumer and pays less for the electricity backfeed.

That can actually make solar far more expensive for you. You’re disincentivized from reducing dirty electricity.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@jwildeboer oh I hear you! But currently consumer panels are expensive and government structures favor dirty electricity.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@jwildeboer WOW! A lot has changed since we installed ours a few years ago!

research: if you use a grid system of any kind, do you use "offset" columns? In other words, the ability to skip a grid column to position a grid item?

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@5t3ph Unless I'm misunderstanding what they are, I find them quite useful for designs where you have a grid of items that shouldn't fill the full width of your container.

#css debugging question

when using cascade layers, is there an easy way to detect if some styles are unlayered? i pretty much always want all my styles to be layered but sometimes i miss a rule or two and it wreaks havoc

maybe someone has written a script that i could run in tampermonkey and maybe even in CI?

    @starshaped @claudiasnell I hate fall with every fiber of my being. I know I’m in the extreme minority here. I’d much rather have winter than fall.

    @starshaped @claudiasnell a few things. My seasonal affective disorder kicks in.

    I also hate how swingy the temperature is over the course of a day. I dislike needing warm clothes in the morning, but being too hot in them by lunchtime. Or having a 10° temperature swing when you step in to the shade.

    And I am someone who just generally prefers to be in shorts and barefoot.
