A Linux app that's equivalent to Microsoft Publisher. It's for an event poster that I need to make. Haven't touched any publishing apps for many years. Learned a bit of QuarkExpress and Publisher back in the day. Thoughts?

@stranded_output Scribus is probably the most well-known and frequently recommended, but it's overkill for my uses. I know a lot of design folks use Inkscape but it's more free-form vector design and less print focused (but works!). Could also go as simple as LibreOffice Draw.

Dell's half price Pro Display XDR is live, even comes with a free stand. I do like HDR, I don't $2500 like HDR.

@paul it does pass my sniff test for a good size and resolution combination, at least? https://cassidyjames.com/dippi/?d=32&w=6144&h=3456&t=d

A link doing the rounds, trying to petition #Spotify to take ownership of the #Flatpak package for #Linux. In my opinion, they really shouldn't have used the "2 million downloads" number, because the vast majority of those are delta updates from the same people who already have it installed. There's ~110K machines with the Spotify Flatpak installed. They should have used that number, as it's more genuine. Also, they should speak to humans at Spotify, not use petitions. https://community.spotify.com/t5/Idea-Submissions/Spotify-should-take-official-ownership-of-the-Linux-Flatpak/idi-p/5578184

@popey this is why we need a Flatpak/Flathub developer advocate… I don't have the time to do it all day long, but I'd love to chat with the folks in charge about these sorts of decisions.

I get that it’s hot right now, but man, the user experience of LLMs being this bot you type text to seems like a huge step backwards compared to just integrating these AI features natively into products.

#GoogleIO #LLMs #AI

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

@jcrabapple yeah, looks like it. They’ve been doing this sort of AI integration and it’s much more interesting to me.

When everyone says Bing is way ahead because they licensed ChatGPT, this is why I was annoyed. These things are much more useful when deeply integrated.

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

This AI stuff is a snoozefest.

I 👏 DON’T 👏 CARE 👏

Wake me up when you talk about Nest and Pixel.

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

I don’t use Google search anymore, but man, they really are taking over the entire search engine with their own AI model instead of showing results. I feel like web publishers are gonna be pissed.

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

I do enjoy split screen on my Pixel for events like this. I can have the video up top with Mastodon at the bottom. Better than picture-in-picture since it doesn’t cover up the app.

(The top corners not being rounded is driving me nuts though!)

Tailwind, definitely not an existing product called that.

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

This Project Tailwind thing sounds interesting, but also looks like Material You gone overboard. Not a fan of the tinker toy aesthetic.

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

So a huge focus of previous Google I/O events has been reaching people who don’t have Internet. How do all of these LLM/AI models work for people who are disconnected?

FINALLY Android time!

I really want Google Fast Pair on Linux/GNOME. Has anyone looked into that?

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

Yessss finally an actual privacy preserving device finding network that’s useful outside of just iPhones or Tile app users. That’s gonna be dope.

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

Lock screen clock stuff looks straight from iOS. I am still surprised Apple did this first.

Am I weird that I really want a native Android app for Mastodon administration? The website feels way too designed for desktops and squished down into a mobile form factor—and it would be dope to be able to do more admin-y things in context on my phone.

@megalodon any chance of bringing more instance admin features into the app?

cassidy, to internet
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

I feel like you can’t call Bluesky decentralized until it is actually that in practice. It’s like if there was only one Mastodon instance in the world and everyone kept talking about how it was decentralized.

The hard parts are when you have different servers and how they interact. Of course only having one server makes signups simpler. You can’t claim it’s decentralized and then also tout how it’s much simpler to sign up because there’s only one server. 😜

If you’re using social networks to find news about the things you’re interested in (yes, that includes Mastodon), it’s time to stop and use something that was actually made for that: RSS!

So I made a quick video about this old tech, and how it’s still the absolute best way of curating what you read, watch, receive, or listen to:

https://youtu.be/_7LTwnAaQ3k

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

@thelinuxEXP I still have to watch this, but my issue with RSS has always been the firehose issue of just way too much stuff. This is where the algorithmic approach of Twitter or Facebook works “well” (for some definition), since you’re more likely to see the top news versus every single thing.

However, Mastodon’s trending page works well for this as well; maybe some combination of RSS reader, plus aggregating social information from the Fediverse to show “top shared stories” could work?

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

@thelinuxEXP no I don't mean the sources themselves, but the sense of what external links are actually trending/being interacted with. Fire example, I’d love an option to see a summary of the most “popular” posts this week from each of my RSS sources than every single post. That popularity data has to come from somewhere, and the Fediverse could potentially be a source for it, especially because Mastodon at least already has a per-instance trending link API.

Some days you just gotta treat yourself. #coffee

cassidy,

@scottytrees heh, it's actually about ¾ cup cold brew coffee, ¾ cup milk, a Tbsp of cocoa, a Tbsp of sugar, and some whipped cream on top. :)
