I’ve said this several times before.

There were a couple episodes where they had iJustine on as a guest. I think they built a server for her? Anyway one episode they did was they set up a Mac and a Windows PC next to each other, and had Justine use Windows and Linus use MacOS for a series of routine computer tasks. Both found stumbling blocks. Both of them, when hearing what the task is, said to the other “Oh you’re going to struggle with that.” I remember specifically Justine saying that of taking a screenshot on MacOS because apparently the key combination isn’t intuitive, it’s something like Cmd+6 or something?

Why didn’t WIndows and MacOS both get declared unfit for use by normies the way Linux did? They did a similar “here are some tasks to complete” challenge which wasn’t well thought out; how would most people “sign a PDF?” Why would “enjoy HDR content” be on there other than “lol it doesn’t support this.”

I also recall another older episode where (do we retroactively call her Emily for appearances in older videos?) walked James through the process of installing and running games in Linux. Which I think would be a more valuable series of videos than “some guys who fully intend to go back to windows at the end of a month try to slog through Linux unaided I guess.” Do a 30-day Learning Linux challenge, where some newbies who genuinely have a goal of switching platforms do so under the guidance of a veteran user.

I’ll even put my keyboard where my mouth is. I’ve used Linux full time for 10 years now for work and play, I do not currently own any working Windows systems. I’ll volunteer to be that mentor character on camera.

Captain Janeway - Hair Master (lemmy.world)

My favorite part was how her hair was in a beautiful and much more complicated knot in the premier episode, then it was a mangled mess after Voyager was thrown to the Delta Quadrant, but they make a show of her fixing it into the simpler knot with her bare hands while walking the corridors from one disaster to another....

Some men think they can outsmart me. Maybe. sniff Maybe. I’ve yet to meet one that can outsmart boolet.

You don’t see those long rigidly fixed guillotines they had in the 50’s anymore. I do know from experience that the little Mercedes three point hoop thing is kind of spring loaded so it’ll flex during an impact.

Is that the listed reason pop-up headlights were outlawed? I thought it was because the pop-up mechanisms fail and then you don’t have lights, same reason the brake lights can’t be on movable bodywork.

I haven’t seen anyone not laugh at that joke.

And then years of watching Gen Zers go back and play Super Mario World on the SNES and then wonder aloud who “Princess Toadstool” is.

Perhaps it was a couple years too soon for basically an HD remake?

It is exactly that. “Heat pump” is the term used for an air conditioner that can run both ways, it can pump heat from inside out in the summer, and from outside in in the winter. An “Air conditioner” only runs one way.

Water heaters can work via the refrigeration cycle as well.

I can flex some muscle in my head that causes a roaring sound in my ears. Not sure what that’s for.

My ears don’t seem to move when I do that.

Flight instructor here: “ditching” is the technical term for landing a land plane on water. Here’s the procedure from the Pilots Operating Handbook of a Cessna 172S:

It’s the empennage in the background that really makes it.

I think because we very pointedly jettisoned all noble titles as a component of a little kerfluffle about 250 years ago.

Thanks!

I’ll tell you this, I couldn’t have gotten this done two years ago. I’ve built a lot of things over the years but very few fine woodworking projects, and last year I really started hitting it in earnest, I outfitted my backyard shed as an almost fully featured furniture shop (I can’t figure how to cram in a lathe or a band saw) and started really churning things out. And each project was a learning experience. Including this one.

Do you do any woodworking?

Thanks!

I did use a taper jig on the table saw. Mine is made out of a 12"x48" piece of plywood with some horizontal slots and a 4"x48" piece that acts kind of like a “fence” that can be set at a variety of angles. A couple of hold-down clamps secure the work to the jig. It can cut a variety of tapers, and it can also function as a jointer for milling rough stock. If I have a piece that is significantly bowed, I can cut a lot of the bow off with my taper jig in one slice at the table saw rather than spending an afternoon wearing out my poor little jointer.

The bottom shelf isn’t actually attached at all; the legs all angling in has it captive. A couple dots of glue in the middle of the end grain sides, or a couple brads in that same location, would probably serve well enough.

You might want to see if there’s a makerspace in your area open to public membership, they can be a great way to not only access tools but network with other craftsmen and take classes.

I wonder what it would do for those of us who have had dental implants.

I had a tooth removed and replaced with a socket bone grafted into my skull to which a crown is bolted. If I were to lose another tooth, what would happen if I took this drug?

Here’s the thing though: We’re talking two villains here. Who would win between two villains. I guess I’m old and cynical enough to where the more interesting question to me is “what are the writers going to do in this scenario?”

Naw, SG-1 blows both of them up with stuff they carry in on foot.
