@britter@chaos.social

I live in West Germany with my wife and two little sons.

In my free time I enjoy cycling, reading (space
operas), and video games. I also like to tinker with my computer and am very facinated by NixOS.

I work as a lead software engineer at Gradle Inc., co-founded GradleX.org, and am an emeritus Apache Software Foundation member. Last but not least, I co-host my own podcast: Autoweird.fm

Current status: I‘m making progress very slowly. The server is assembled and up and running Proxmox 8. Yesterday I‘ve build a custom NixOS installiert that has my SSH key pre-loaded. That way I can boot a VM and set it up using nix-anywhere. Tonight I‘m planning to try this out the first time.

Was collecting a security checklist for (non-nerd) computer users again:

  1. Make backups.
  2. Be vigilant of scam messages.
  3. Use a password manager.
  4. Do all updates.
  5. Use an adblocker.

Anything important missing? Do you agree with the priority order?

Hey @thelinuxEXP is this https://drewdevault.com/2024/04/09/2024-04-09-FDO-conduct-enforcement.html something for the next linux news video, given the popularity of tiling WMs - Hyprland in particular - in your community (according to your community survey)?

In any case, love your videos. Keep up the good work! 👍

britter,
@britter@chaos.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP I absolutely understand that! The internet is unfortunately still a bad place with a lot of douchbags bullying people with a different opinion 😔

britter,
@britter@chaos.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP this is exactly the right thing to do. And most of them will still not understand / accept that their behavior is not tolerated. See the case at hands 😕

Anyways, you can be sure the vast majority of your community will thank you for creating a safe space to share and discuss ideas and opinions. 🫶 it’s okay to respectfully disagree and still be friends.

britter,
@britter@chaos.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP I think it is because a lot of the early big social networks came from US companies and they are generally not good at moderating. It‘s probably a US cultural thing. And now most of the internet has become wild west in this regard. It has only been a few years that I‘m seeing CoCs really being enforced. I hope we continue on the path.

I finally decided for a new daily driver laptop. I wanted something from a small manufacturer focused on . Looked at devices from , , , . At the end I decided for the Pulse 14 from @tuxedocomputers. It looks almost perfect for me. The only downside is that they don‘t ship with US-ANSI keyboards. I‘m afraid this will annoy me the first few week… Anyways, looking forward for the device to arrive in order to install .

@penguingeek @tuxedocomputers I‘m pretty happy with my setup, so I don‘t see why I would switch to 🤔 I guess would be an alternative.

Okay, so I‘ve used for a while and recently started using not only for text editing, but also for and development. It‘s still not the same as using a full IDE such as . But I love how snappy terminal based editing feels… so what’s next? Should I look into ? Found an introduction video on YouTube that‘s just 1h 39min 😅

    @fmueller I‘ve had a few touch points with C and C++ lately due to my tinkering with . I have to say the way toolchains (don’t) organize dependencies is really astonishing when coming from a JVM background.

    has anyone seen an explanation of nix flakes that explains the design goals of flakes & the fundamental problems they're trying to solve before diving into the syntax?

    i'm looking for something like:

    • the goal of flakes is to let people define packages in an uncoordinated way without a central repository
    • the problem is coordinating dependencies: you could easily end up with an explosion where you end up installing 1000 versions of libc
    • the way flakes address that problem is ???
    britter,

    @b0rk I like this presentation about flakes by Eelco Dolstra https://youtu.be/UeBX7Ide5a0?si=Fiza0VkyFsSOdcjn

    Can we please not have the word „simply“ in NixOS manual or nixos.wiki? NixOS learning curve is super steep and it‘s frustrating when you start and you don‘t understand how to do things that are supposed to be simple

    After using NixOS for a while, it has become one of these things where I think „how clould I live without it before?“ The learning curve is steep but it‘s absolutely worth it.
