Here is a blog post with links and references to accompany my closing keynote today at #PyConUS , on stories from a few years working on #Python packaging.

I've now published the transcript and slides of my keynote, "Untold stories from six years working on Python packaging". It's a PDF linked from:

https://harihareswara.net/posts/2024/references-pycon-us-keynote/

This includes:

the lyrics to the pip sea shanty (a filk of "The Wellerman")

annotations marking where the audience laughed

at least ten intentionally blank slides

Conference slide, also with the PyCon US 2024 template ♪♫♬ ● Soon may dependencies break ● Resolving the conflicts that you make ● This year, for stability's sake ● You'll take this pip and go [tune: Wellerman] #PyConStories

If anyone here has a tip for an easy workflow to export a LibreOffice Impress slides + speaker notes file into a single HTML page that's organized something like https://www.changeset.nyc/resources/quick-intro-to-grants.html (slides side-by-side with speaker notes), I'd love to know it. The default HTML exports, at least in LibreOffice 7.0.4.2, don't do what I want.

Biological features I would like to borrow from other species:

  • Photosynthesis (would make ultralight backpacking way easier if I didn't have to carry food)
  • Gills (swimming, yeah, but also, just more options for breathing)
  • Blood temperature regulation and skin toughness for wider range of comfortable temps
  • Seeing more colors, as shrimp do
  • Elephant-like trunk (for grasping and occasional water fights)
  • Whatever it is that makes tummy rubs and head scratches so dynamite for pet dogs

@nekohayo I would however like to not be caught in whatever recurring reincarnation hero's journey thing Link is dealing with

(I have never played any of the Zelda games. A year or two ago, at my request, my spouse sat down with me and patiently explained precisely how the Zelda and Final Fantasy game series are different. I accept this.)

Oh, and, whenever I am hiking with trekking poles for a while, and then stop using them, there is always a part of me that goes "awwww, I liked being a quadruped" and wishes I could just keep doing that

I do like being able to stand on my hind legs, and having prehensile forelimbs, but loping along or standing on 4 limbs as a better-supported option would be really nice

Studying wilderness medicine and emergency incident response, my "this will be different if we change biologically or include extraterrestrials" background process goes off sometimes

e.g., my notes on the Incident Command System include:

Manageable Span of Control: "Span of control refers to the number of individuals or resources that one supervisor can manage effectively during an incident. The optimal span of control is one supervisor to five subordinates (1:5)..." [DIFFERENT FOR ALIENS]

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

Or, from NOLS Wilderness Medicine, 7th Edition:

"An obstructed airway is a medical emergency because oxygen cannot reach the lungs, a condition we can tolerate only for a few minutes."

I read that and instantly thought: that usage of "we" is something they'll have to fix when aliens come to Earth and some of them want to learn how to be wilderness guides

and there's probably a bunch of that assumption sprinkled throughout the text, unmarked, making future localization a pain

@jacob "all humans have symbiotic relationships with other (albeit non-sentient) terrestrial animals, whom they call pets and who live with them as members of their families. Choice of canine or feline as pet is hereditary"

"Humans eliminate waste through several processes: urination, defecation, perspiration, exhalation, flatulation, nasal and optical discharge, and vomiting. Of these, vomiting is most common" (because they're super wrong on what to feed us in captivity)

Followup:

IETF mailing list moderators have acted on the incident
https://social.coop/@brainwane/112572039821787771

LaunchDarkly has deleted their LinkedIn post about their new ad campaign, but left the site itself up.

Per https://www.columnfivemedia.com/strong-marketing-b2b-video-examples/ & https://www.champagneandgyoza.com/launchdarkly-2 , the marketing agency on this campaign made videos joking about tech-ignorant moms and dads, but the ad campaign currently running only focuses on moms. Videos were published to Vimeo in December 2022, so, it's not like this was a hasty decision.

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

And as of a few hours later, the https://launchdarkly.com/live-laugh-launch/ site is pulled down. ( https://web.archive.org/web/20240606232850/https://launchdarkly.com/live-laugh-launch/ has the Wayback Machine snapshot BTW.)

I appreciate everyone inside and outside of LaunchDarkly who spoke to their management about this and helped them make this decision.

Fascinating that in the same week we have

https://launchdarkly.com/live-laugh-launch

a reasonably established tech co. launching a marketing campaign based on a "haha, moms don't understand programming" joke

+, as reported by https://mastodon.social/@nwalfield/112558152322172971 , a guy posting to a public IETF mailing list responding to a woman's post by talking about her looks & asking her to have lunch with him

Maybe I have been out of touch recently but these feel like flashbacks to 10-15 years ago, in English-language software culture

@glyph Per https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/ietf/VidjZkJX3ESafMJz2AKqNblOI5g/ the moderators contacted the poster in question with

"a request to take a voluntary cooling-off break"

also see https://cosocial.ca/@timbray/112571985103484208 which indicates that the moderators were, even previous to this incident, likely not disposed kindly toward him

The Lucira at-home test is a molecular -19 test, more accurate than an antigen test. It takes 30 minutes to run and display the results - no app needed.

As @effies noted https://wandering.shop/@effies/109395591106550269 , Amazon has it on sale for USD$30.

If you have spare "use it or lose it" Flexible/Health Savings Accounts money to spend by Dec. 31st, you could buy some of these.

Molecular #COVID tests update:

The FDA says: don't use #Cue tests. https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/safety-communications/do-not-use-cue-healths-covid-19-tests-due-risk-false-results-fda-safety-communication

#CueHealth has now teminated all its employees & declared bankruptcy https://investors.cuehealth.com/node/8596/html

The Cue app now won't let you initiate a COVID test. (One friend said it works to just insert the cartridge. The app eventually recognizes the test in progress; you have to tap around to find a record of it.)

Alternative at-home molecular tests now include:
Metrix
Lucira
3EO
PlusLife (not yet FDA-authorized)

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

I've tried Cue, Metrix, and Lucira. I haven't yet tried 3EO https://3eohealth.com/products/covid-19-test-kit or PlusLife https://altruan.com/collections/pluslife .

Sometime in the next month I would like to write up an updated version of www.harihareswara.net/posts/2023/my-current-covid-risk-approach/ discussing Metrix, mouthwashes, nasal sprays, etc.

(If you feel like enabling this further, I put 3EO & PlusLfife on https://harihareswara.net/texts/wishlist/ .)

Metrix used to sell a bundle of 25 tests + 3 readers but doesn't offer that right now, alas.

Revisiting https://web.archive.org/web/20210613090253/http://gandre.ws/blog/blog/2014/01/01/educators-toolbox-for-security-trainers/ by @gusandrews , I noticed:

"The classic cognition paper A Time For Telling suggests that students learn best from lectures when they’ve actively worked through a problem first. In the paper’s original experiment, the students compared two contrasting cases before hearing a lecture."

Have now bookmarked https://aaalab.stanford.edu/papers/time_for_telling.pdf for later perusal, but even a skim shows me this is fascinating.

Yes, lectures can be a useful part of a training! If used well!

https://handbook.gitlab.com/handbook/legal/ai-functionality-terms/ This imitation intelligence/simulated intelligence-specific terms of service is interesting as a way to limn open questions.

Has user "obtained all necessary rights, approvals, and consents for its use of Input"?

Who owns output?

Is user OK with the tool generating similar output for others? Including competitors?

"Customer is responsible for ensuring any Output incorporated into Customer intellectual property complies with third-party intellectual property rights"

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

And https://handbook.gitlab.com/handbook/legal/acceptable-use-policy/ you're not allowed "To falsely represent that output generated by our AI-powered services was solely human-generated"

or "To make any automated decision that impacts material or individual rights or well-being (e.g. to assign scores or ratings to individuals based on an assessment of their trustworthiness or social behavior)."

Or to use the services in SEVERAL fields, including "Political campaigning, election interference, or lobbying."

Nor to do "model scraping".

My friend made https://amtrack.live/ and it's neat!

If you take Amtrak and want info on train status/delays, it's annoying that the official Amtrak website is slow to load & doesn't have train status perma-URLs to bookmark/share. https://railrat.net/ is pretty good but has ads. amtrack.live is faster & has no ads.
