Hoping for some advice on AI pathfinding terminology

Basically I have a town made of individual hex shaped tiles with buildings on them. Each tile will have footpaths too, and my little people will hopefully wander around the paths, travelling to other tiles via their path connections.

I'm fine with learning this stuff but just not sure exactly what terms to search for to get started!

Should I be looking up specific features for finding routes? Algorithms? Help!

@gamedev

bluestarultor,

@teahands @gamedev A* ("A star") might be a friendly starting point. It's generally intended for square grids, but a little algebra to get the right distance for the angles might make it possible to extend to hexagons. Even if you don't end up using any part of it, just understanding it might help for fundamentals.

It is intense just how badly the JS/React brainworms have infected the frontend community.

Every single NYT story page has both a 437KiB (1.5MiB unzipped) and a 474KiB (1.7MiB) file, to display ~50K of text. It isn't ad bloat. It isn't tracking. It's this sort of bunk:

bluestarultor,

@thomasapowell @slightlyoff Honestly, go nuts. Nobody's cared enough to find mine, so I don't even feel bad about the spoiler, but the whole thing isn't that slow.

My site is almost 100% HTML and CSS, with only a JS redirect to mobile. (If you're on mobile, then I didn't duplicate the whole setup because it would be far harder to use.)

i don't know how people keep their house immaculately clean. i'm happy when i manage to keep myself fed and the dishes done

bluestarultor,

@ifixcoinops @eniko The only clean house is either a house devoid of stuff or a house devoid of humanity. Any house that's too clean has a problem, like walking into a forest devoid of sound. If you do, it's best to turn around and run.

bluestarultor,

@ifixcoinops @eniko That's the home of the ghost of a man who already drowned. Nothing to fill his existence but a window to a world he thought he might visit one day, but has given up on along with everything else. You see that sometimes after an ugly divorce where he had to purge everything he'll never see again, or else someone who waited for traditional success to come like he was promised only to realize that it never fell in his lap. He may still have a pulse, but that's about it.

Or else a serial killer who doesn't put down roots in case someone finds the bodies.

bluestarultor,

@german Winston from Overwatch. Sorry, but when he's got a whole POTG animation that's a big shot of his panting, spraying mouth and then they go "actually he was cleaning his glasses," BS, they KNEW what they were doing. Or at the very least they ASKED. XD

A bit of #GameDev to reveal a couple options for "Jerako: Walk With Me!" First, meet Arrow. You may be able to hire him when venturing in an area alone. Second, paying a bit into the app can earn you the ability to change the colors. This is Wulfenite and best shows off Arrow's natural appearance.

And as a new feature, daily activity PROBABLY isn't going to exceed 99,999 steps or the resultant Calories burned by that, so I decided I could make better use of the spaces in the info banner.

bluestarultor,

Oh, snap, I also forgot this is probably the first anyone has seen the "Jerako Johnson" font. Everything up to this point has been in "Jerako Jewell" or a modified version of "Ghost font" that originated in "Ghost in the Machine."

All of them have been optimized for different kinds of readability. Jewell is intended to be friendly toward dyslexia, while Johnson is intended for people who might otherwise have contrast issues. Ghost font has a wide spacing to make it easy to parse in general, but this modified version slams the punctuation to the left edge to save on spaces to fit more into a text block and has more ligatures.

bluestarultor,

Also, no, you are not imagining it, the "C" in "kCal" is in fact a big "¢" sign. No medical claims here; kCal are for entertainment purposes only and represent one of the currencies of the game. A valiant attempt has been made to research things for GENERAL accuracy, but when so much seemingly relies on your height, weight, astrological sign, and the particular crystals your house is sitting on, there was just too much disparity for me, a programmer, to do the job of your doctor, who has access to more than Google to figure this stuff out.

The goal is to be a supplement for apps that do a way better job at things this may or may not do, but tend to be missing various features that this has. Most importantly, I just want to make it fun to get moving.

bluestarultor,

Also yes, the decimal has a "pt" there to designate "point." Because a period just didn't do the job there, so it's a totally different character and I wanted to make it clear what it was for, half for myself. XD

bluestarultor,

Trivia bit: Jerako Jewell was inspired by a mailbox! There was a mailbox I saw driving with "Jewell" on it in really curly hand painted text. So when I had to come up with a name for an elven-inspired curlicued font, that was the first thing I remembered and thought to name it. Jerako Johnson actually started as a font for "The Adventures of Renard" before I understood that 8x16 sprite mode didn't apply to tiles on NES. So it was rescued when I needed a font for Jerako to replace FixedSys Excelsior, but went unnamed until I made Jewell. I chose "Johnson" because it's a very straightforward name in many ways. And in part after an old friend.

bluestarultor,

100k steps is about 50 miles, BTW. If you're walking, that's basically going to be 100% of your daylight in summer. So I mean it's possible, but probably not healthy. As in "you might legitimately kill yourself," with death being pretty seriously unhealthy.

Alex Norris made this entry of Webcomic Name that perfectly describes Fedi right now.

Fedi grew out of groups forced out of places like Twitter and Facebook. It is a space built specifically to protect everyone here from the systems that did it.

When we talk about , , , , and newcomers who immediately want changes to make them more like other spaces, this is exactly that in 3 panels.

bluestarultor,

@ifixcoinops PurpleAir has a map of local monitors nationwide. I find them to read higher than satellite reports like weather apps use, but the site tends to minimize the health effects related to the readings compared to much more concerning language in weather apps, even when the weather apps estimate the index much lower.

Weather apps will be at like 90 and be "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIEEEE" and PurpleAir will be like 150 and say "meh, avoid 24 hours of exposure if you're a big baby." Same supposed scale.

I honestly trust the PurpleAir sensor readings because there's a reasonable explanation for any discrepancies in the network, but feel like both methods find a way to tell city folk they're not sucking a tailpipe all day every day.

Pills are great until you don't have them.

I mean I HAVE some, but only a few doses and no indication of when the refill I requested 5 days ago will be filled.

Lucky for me, it's raining, so I have an excuse not to mow the lawn, but I also need to do dishes and motivation is slim.

bluestarultor,

This whole "being at the mercy of a broken system" thing kinda sucks. "Oh, but what if someone gets high on them?" OMG, someone is going to get high on something else that doesn't require a prescription in the first place! Yes, this stuff has street value, but someone who's selling isn't going to give a shit if there's a gap in supply. Meanwhile everyone who needs it just has to eat shit on days like this because it's a choice between random days of misery on the weekends and random days of misery on the job.

This "if it stops even one" attitude can take a hike. I would rather a dozen get high on it just so one person isn't fired for a really bad day. I'd rather there be a "getting high" orgy just so people like me don't have to deal with the distress of having to ration pills for the sake of their job. Because it's already hard enough to get that there's probably 10,000 folks like me for every 1 getting high.

And if they STEAL it from us because it's easier, we're just extra fucked, now aren't we?

Been working on a Star Trek Next Generation pinball the past couple of days. Just wanted to show y'all this general illumination connector.

Seu how burned up and melted it is! This thing got HAWT.

General illumination is the lights on a pinball that aren't for indicating a particular feature, they're just for letting you see the ball. They're on all (or nearly all) of the time and draw a bit of current - enough to burn this connector up after a decade or so.

bluestarultor,

@ifixcoinops "Trial and error" as in "the color response is shit and you need to work around it and spread it around right with your filters" or "my kingdom for a halfway decent warm white?" XD

Because honestly, given how new decent warm whites still are and just how the diodes work, I could see either one or both just as easily.

bluestarultor,

@ifixcoinops This doesn't surprise me in the least. XD

The only other thing I can think of that LEDs might cause problems with is I guess they're absolute murder on traditional gels like are used for spotlights because they're high-powered blues at their core, but given how thick the plastic bits are in arcade machines, and the lower power involved, they probably aren't at risk of washing the color out of those components in any appreciable amount of time. I guess there are newer gels that resist it, too, but you pay for it. XD

OK this is an emergency call to my enthusiast friends in and around the metro/Front Range/ / / area

Urban Putt Denver is, sadly, closing its doors. However, there is an opportunity to rescue a one-of-a-kind stand up arcade game/mini golf "hole" before it ends up in the scrap heap.

Bunker Blast 3000 was designed to resemble a retro 1980s arcade game. As a mini-golf hole, the game is played by putting into a ramp underneath the "arcade" display. Sensors inside the game read the ball's velocity and angle, and the game renders a virtual ball on the screen, rolling through a "game grid" like environment reminiscent of Tron. The game then kicks the ball out for subsequent putt attempts.

The unit is 36 inches wide and roughly 5 to 6 feet tall. It features a color display and custom software that exists as a one-of-a-kind homage to classic arcade games.

Here's the deal though: This unit needs to be moved THIS SUNDAY, June 11th, when the dismantling of Urban Putt will be going on.

If you know someone who wants, or you yourself want, a collectible and irreplaceable, fully functional and FUN AS HELL objet-d'art for your living room, barcade, or museum, my friend, Urban Putt CEO Steve Fox, will GIVE YOU the item at no charge, if you can bring enough people and a vehicle large enough to carry it away.

DM me for serious inquiries, only. No, it's too heavy to ship out of Colorado unless you're going to put it in your own box truck and carry it yourself.

Please repost widely. Thank you!

WHAT THE HELL.

I was just looking on my phone for tips on how to teach a kid to ride a bike, and ten minutes later my spouse asks me "Did you go to a site called Guardian Bikes?"

I did, aye.

She says "Well they just sent me an email saying how happy they were to find me."

I don't know how the hell they got my spouse's email but she's freaking out and tbh so am I.
