🇳🇿"New Zealand is experiencing its highest peak in COVID-19 cases since December 2022, professor Michael Baker says."

"Despite the recommended isolation period now only being 5 days, Baker suggested people still getting a positive Covid-19 test wait to test again on day 6 or 7 before going back into society."

"The biology hasn't changed," Baker said, but there was more pressure for people to go back to work and school."

Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Awesome night at Lake Aviemore. the sky was clear and the aurora Australis was. UNBELIEVABLE. Here's a timelapse I shot earlier this evening. I've been up 28 hours and OMG!

@iangriffin Ian I have often thought that if it wasn’t for you, most of Dunedin would never have heard of an aurora, of that we got them.

But I think yesterday would have changed that!

David Farrier today tells us of how Brian Houston, the rich pastor of Hillsong fundamentalist church, tweeted “Ladies and girls kissing” to his 10,000 followers this week. It seems he thought he was doing a google search, this fine upstanding Christian man who demonises gay people for their sin.
He then quickly deleted the tweet (but of course not before screen capture and replies) and 16 minutes later let everyone know ‘I seem to have been hacked’.

You couldn’t make this shit up.

I detested the nasty anti-labour/Jacinda stuff on social media, was appalled at the nastiness, dishonesty of some of it

I am just as appalled to see some of those who complained about it are now being just as awful about our new gov and individual ministers. Nasty, sexist attacks on people’s looks rather than policies, lies about motivations - these are bad for democracy no matter which party you back

Politics is made worse when we make it adversarial sport. Let’s not become more like the USA

It never ceases to amaze me how many science people are working on improving our food production systems. Today is a ‘building resilient production systems’ seminar day at Lincoln. Healthy land, water, biosecurity, lessons from matauranga, climate adaptation so that we improve levels of food insecurity.

It is heartening.

If you are wondering at Meridian’s 50c/kWh charge at EV charging stations, yes it is a ripoff.
22c/kWh for electricity at home. “But of course there is infrastructure etc to pay for too” you might think.

So how to Chargenet manage just 40c/kWh to charge up - and they are an electricity purchaser and on-seller, while Meridian needs to charge 25% more and they are a generator and wholesaler?

The riding is coming along. Trying to decide if we like ‘standing on the tank’, or in a backpack. He really prefers standing at this point, but even ththered to me in a harness, I doubt this for longer (than around the block to the dog cafe) trips. Really didn’t want to get off when we got home!

Phonecall this evening from No Caller ID.

Woman claiming to be from {my bank} fraud line. “We see 2suspicious transactions tonight - $500 online gambling ‘which seems unlike you’ and $1000 at Noel Leeming. Made from Wellington”. Yep, not me. Ok so ‘tell me your bank ID number and I’ll block them’. “Why do you need my bank ID? Just block them!” She was insistent. I said I had no evidence she was from my bank. Eventually I hung up. Rang bank - not them.

This was close to convincing.

I don't generally go for conspiracy theories but I'd be open to one explaining the distribution of nuts across multiple supermarket sections

@sue can we include seeds? Sesame seeds specifically. White in the big bins @$1 for a jar full, white in small bags, $3.99 for a jar full, black in the international section, $5 for a thimbleful.

We were planning to buy a full EV in a couple of years, our ‘take us into retirement’ car.

But with the Clean Car Discount possibly going after the election, and Westpac offering a 5 year interest free loan for the full purchase price, it is tempting to get it now, even though it won’t get much use as we’d keep the dinged up hybrid for a towing/dog-car workhorse…

biddy_sue,
@biddy_sue@mastodon.nz avatar

@McNJules Nice choice. We have a PHEV now - but range is 30km. Gets me to work, then charge at supermarket, then home. But we know we want full EV at some point. The new MG4 has range of 400-500km depending on model, with rapid charging, so it pretty much all we’d ever need I think.

Imagine shouting down a Mayor because she says she wants affordable housing and to deal with climate change and cycleways. In fact, imagine shouting down a Mayor at all!

What is wrong with our political discourse where this has become ok! It is like we thing it is fine to be as rude and abusive as we feel like, any time now - and not even just in social media!!

From the UK today, evidence that the punitive approach of limiting welfare payments to ‘two child’ size, regardless of how many children in a family, does NOT work to encourage employment, just increases poverty. So I guess that’s a guarantee someone will pick it up and campaign on this policy here in NZ then.

Make no mistake. Terms like “the politics of envy” are specifically designed to stop ordinary people questioning the breaks and perks available only to the rich. To make people feel bad about questioning why a select group are allowed to earn income without paying tax on that type of income at all.

Don’t let that sort of spin win. Keep questioning.

Finally, the house reno is over. Leaks, dodgy wiring fixed, fluorescent lights and cracked basin gone, and Lisa has her doorless walk-in shower.
We spent this morning moving back into our room. The new ensuite is moody and restful - although I do wonder where the rugby team that could have fitted in that humongous leaky spa-bath will go now to relax🤣 The photo doesn’t do the size of it justice - we had to climb in to open windows or clean it!

New bathroom with dark tiles and lovely egg bath
