Thinking about underground fantasy societies. How would such cultures go about without ready access to wood? What do carpenters in Menzoberranzan use to make tables of?

Starting to frame mundane activities in my life as clickbait titles, and I hate it.

"Did I just ACCIDENTALLY have a delightful breakfast?"

"AWFUL! The terrible secrets of what's in my work calendar..."

"This cup of coffee CHANGES EVERYTHING!"

GMs and worldbuilders of Mastodon: When there are just too many ideas that seem like they'd be awesome, how do you decide? I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'm mostly like neurodivergent of the or variety, and my creative loop gets constantly sabotaged by hyper-interrogated cool ideas until I lose creative confidence in them. Any advice on this is much appreciated, cause at the end of the day... I just want to build cool worlds and play cool games.

    @LeviKornelsen Personally I like the thought that settings would develop their own idiosyncratic -isms.

    Post-Mokodarianist: Embraces historical materialism but with an esoteric dimension.

    Theluvianist: Supports the restoration of House Theluva to the throne, and thus firmly anti-capitalist, pro-religion and anti-agrarian.

    Anarcho-Brûnidist: Rejects the state, endorses labor organizations organized like monasteries.

    And so on. Specifying and localizing -isms can spice the world up a lot.

    On a long train ride and trying to brainstorm more ideas for the in-progress magic for Reign. Thinking about what magic can’t do. So far:

    • Cannot directly affect a sentient mind.

    • Cannot change the past.

    • Cannot reveal raw information/knowledge.

    • Cannot bring back the dead.

    Thoughts, ideas, other cool magic limits? #rpg #ttrpg #magic #worldbuilding

    @SJohnRoss WUV! True WUV!

    I imagine that falls under the “cannot affect sentient minds” bracket though.

    auguryignored,
    @auguryignored@dice.camp avatar

    @SJohnRoss Definitely, and I think it merits some explanation. I don’t mean that magic cannot be used as a tool in revealing information, but magic constitutes the method rather than the outcome. Magic cannot download an answer to a question to your brain, not can it instantly decode a cipher. But it can summon a spirit who’ll check the walls for you, or hyper-speed up the computational ability of the brain, and so on. Anyway, that’s what I’m thinking and musing about.

    In worldbuilding and RPGs, settings tend to get associated with a genre to go with. But a persistent game world has the advantage that it can be visited through the lens of different genre types. Set a rom com in your dark fantasy world, or a courtroom in your sci-fi, or a game of Fiasco in your post-apoc. Hell, set your smut and erotica in your world!

    If reality can encompass a kaleidoscope of human experience and moods, so can our fictional worlds.

    Watching the Foundation series made me wonder about a "reverse 4X" kind of game, a strategy game where you start with a galaxy-spanning empire and have to manage the fall. Feels like it could be an interesting twist. Surely this has been explored already... But I don't know what games might have done this.

    auguryignored,
    @auguryignored@dice.camp avatar

    @danderson There’s a board game in GMT’s COIN series named Pendragon that deals with Britain during the decline and fall of the Roman Empire in the region - it might be worth checking out for inspiration.

    @LeviKornelsen Interesting. I’m hard-pressed to think of any real-world mythologies where non-human sentients are actual offshots of humanity, or humanity of them, beyond some few edge cases. Elves and orcs in Tolkien’s world is one example in a fictional mythology. I think in worldbuilding terms, it very much boils to what’s thematically pertinent to the setting. And that’s not even touching on subjects like Traveller’s Humaniti and the Solomani Hypothesis!
