for me, transition has been a long process of deciding over and over "i'm bored with this problem, time to turn it in and get a different one"

Reading a book about an old computer, and it's a very cozy vibe. Before getting properly started, it needs to explain what a silicon transistor is, because it's very newfangled and the reader may not be aware of the knock-on benefits of the NPN topology in silicon, compared to the more traditional germanium devices.

Also, section titles that sound like shitposts:

Watching a skilled engineer try to achieve a working bare metal kubernetes cluster, and hitting every single broken thing that was already there five years ago, except each broken thing has become fractally more broken by the proliferation of CRDs.

I guess I'm surprised, because the main response to a Nov 2020 blog post describing some of it mostly resulted in people telling me it was either already fixed or would be fixed in a few weeks. But that's none of my business.

The organizers of this career-day panel I agreed to do want my linkedin and a headshot they can use for publicity purposes.

Am I the only one who doesn't have headshots or a linkedin account? I don't like careers enough to have cultivated either of those things.

@MLE_online same! i needed a headshot for work recently and had to dig for a selfie that i could crop into suitability.

Does anyone on here know a lot about analog telephones? I am trying to figure out how to wire this telephone up for a friend of mine and I am stumped because there are only three wires and I am used to phones having four wires.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

@MLE_online red and green are the phone line. rotary phones are not polarity sensitive. yellow is ground and you can leave it unconnected most likely.

astrid,
@astrid@tiny.tilde.website avatar

@MLE_online you want metallic ringing (ringer is connected across the two line wires). grounded is for party lines and requires you give the yellow wire a ground. i dont think your ata can do grounded ringing anyway.

astrid,
@astrid@tiny.tilde.website avatar

@MLE_online i think i see numbers molded into the plastic under the wires? you might need a lot of light. there may be a legend stamped in there somewhere. if nothing else it probably resembles the drawing layout.

The original proposal for Wi-Fi called it "IP over Weird Fuckin Waves" in reference to how magical and weird radio communication is.

It was shortened to WFW, then some engineer started calling it Why Fy Why because engineers like pronouncing acronyms as if they were words. The name stuck, and now it's called Wi-Fi.

reading through the factorio devblogs for the in-development 2.0 release and came across this gem:

> Often times you want to set some constant number, like "I want 7.5 stacks here", and doing the calculation MANUALLY is of course unacceptable. So we made it that you can type mathematical expressions directly in the textfields.

woooooooooooooooooo finally! numeric text inputs will let you type "100/3" or "50+80" or "10^6" and it'll be properly evaluated.

@gsuberland another step down the slippery slope to embedding spreadsheet macro language, or maybe a lisp, but would that be too bad anyway?

Another feature secured by this construction is that no metal parts are exposed on the outside of the shell, thus insuring immunity from electric shocks while handling the receiver, this being considered very desirable by some.
