It's kind of funny trying to get people who aren't into getting connected with online communities (which is fine) to understand what using social media means to me.

I appreciate everyone who interacts with my posts and everyone who posts the interesting things I interact with. This is, for me, very social and very enjoyable. I'm not exactly close besties with most of my mutuals, but I love the fact that I am getting to know several folks on here.

artemis,
@artemis@dice.camp avatar

Which, by the way, is why I ended up being happier here than I was on Twitter. I think I only have about 1/4 of the followers here as I had on Twitter, but I still have as many or more people I interact with regularly, and those interactions were largely the thing I liked best about Twitter. I like being able to be in conversation with other people about topics of interest whether serious or goofy or mundane.

So largely, being plugged into the fediverse fulfills what I want out of social media without at least some of the drawbacks, but it can be kinda hard to get people to understand that this is in fact "real" and "social".

My brother asked how I got through the horrors of 2020, and I said that I was plugged into online communities that helped me feel less alone in the world, gave me hope, reminded me of the things that make me happy, etc.

If you want to see a case study on parasocial relationships, check out the online sturm und drang about Watcher Entertainment leaving YouTube and starting their own subscription-based streaming service. Now, I've enjoyed their videos over the years, but not enough to subscribe, so I mentally wished them well and moved on. But holy hell, check out social media and you'll find it filled with rage over this perceived economic, ideological, and very personal betrayal.

artemis,
@artemis@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon
Yeah, I find this type of thing complicated because I largely don't have the money to support such projects, but seriously, I'm actually quite happy for the creators I like who have found ways to stop being totally at the mercy of corporate giants. I'm not familiar with Watcher Entertainment specifically, but I think projects like Nebula or the success of Dropout TV are, in general, good things. I want more alternatives!

artemis,
@artemis@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon It's kind of like when people get pissed off at an artist because their commissions "cost too much". If I can't afford to commission an artist I like, that sucks, but they are allowed to value their time and, like all of us, they have to make money because that's the world we live in.

When I can't afford someone's art, I just think "Awwh. Too bad!" and move on. Getting mad at them for an economic reality that isn't their fault is counterproductive af.

I know it's been asked many times before, but how come no one hears about someone "method acting" for a role where they play a really kind and generous person?

I find the phrase "Iran's unprecedented retaliation" really fucking weird but I've seen it in multiple news articles.

It feels like an obvious, desperate attempt to stretch things around to make it seem shocking that Iran retaliated NOT that Israel attacked an embassy.

If they think Iran's not going to respond to Israel bombing their air base, the West is tripping.

"The message was unmistakable, 'we chose not to hit your nuclear sites this time, but we could have done worse right here,' sources told the Post."

@fkamiah17
The hell is wrong with the state of Israel? Are they trying to get Iran to come out and play so that they can pretend to be "victims" while they attack another country or do they just think they can do anything they want without any consequences whatsoever?

It wasn’t long ago that men put women in mental hospitals for disagreeing with them or being disagreeable at large.

The cops are such wonderful enforcers of the existing social order. You can practically always count on them to choose who to "help" or believe based on social hierarchy.

I mean, that's all organizations in our culture, but cops are just so damn CONSISTENT about it.

Do me a favor folks: would you spread this around? I'd love for #Wisconsin residents to see it for sure.

If you want to email Interstate Parking yourself and ask if they have privacy policies for their license plate recognition system, you can do so at info@interstateparking.com

Throwing some tags on here: seriously, folks, this company is absolutely utterly uninterested in user privacy and security. They have had breaches in the past. Calling all fans, can you please ask the if they have confidence that will protect user data? (see above post for details)

Please do!

It looks like this was probably settled out of court, but I just found out that this company whose data privacy and security policies I was questioning was involved in a Class Action lawsuit in 2022 for a data breach.

And yet they STILL don't have data privacy and security policies.

artemis,
@artemis@dice.camp avatar

LOL. I may have sent this and a PDF of the court filing to the MLB and said, do you represent to fans who use your app that integrates this that this company will keep their data secure and private?

I am seriously just dumbfounded that capitalism is always dumber than you think.

Me: hey, company, is your data privacy policy really fucking horrific?

The company: oh, no, we don't have one of those.

@lilithsaintcrow
I'm sure they feel great about it! I'm not in any field of writing now, but as an attempted academic, I can definitely say that being asked to write the introduction to a book or anthology would be an honor.

You went to some people and said "hey, I would love to have your thoughts included in this volume." Most people hearing that request will probably feel pretty pleased. ☺️

A crazy thing about being poorer than other people in your social group is that YOU'RE the rude one if you mention not having enough money to participate in something.

You'll be invited to a restaurant you can't afford, order water and a side salad as your entire meal, but you aren't allowed to say "y'all, I don't have this kind of money."

It's awkward and rude to bring up that you have less money than someone else, apparently. It might make them feel uncomfortable momentarily.

Whoever is writing Biden's campaign ads is living in a very different world than I do.

Do they really think the vibes out here are "hope" and "a bright future"?

Saying it doesn't make it real.

artemis,
@artemis@dice.camp avatar

I get what they are trying to do as far as crafting an alternative narrative to Trump, but um...

I don't find them convincing. I wouldn't think they WOULD be convincing to anyone making less than 80k/yr (and I think that's low).

artemis,

Biden ads saying how Americans are thriving and better off than ever and I'm just stuck asking WHICH Americans are you talking about exactly?
