@cstross @lispi314 @froztbyte So before Linux even existed, we destroyed it .. interesting concept. What next, we get blamed for climate change? And if you think "pull package source, debug from there" is easier than hitting SPACE .. I suppose the earth is flat as well.

With #GNU turning 40, and the @fsf turning ?? (pop quiz! https://hostux.social/@fsf/111177276677774798); my hope for is that we will take back control of the hardware we use, so that we can get rid of DRM, non-free blobware, magical boxes and make our computers respect the freedoms that all users deserve.

@Reiddragon @screwtape Common Lisp is both a high and low level language. What I am referring to is more akin to assembler, C is not a suitable language period -- just the compiler is larger than the whole Lisp Machine system including microcode.

Any hackers who want to hack on the CADR, #LispMachine #LispM? Looking for kind spirited hackers who like to do useless things.

#LispMachine Revolution continues. Now you can talk to other #LispM hackers over global Chaosnet. This is the true #fediverse!

Rust exemplifies everything that is wrong with modern computing. For whatever reason, was upgrading my GNU/Linux system, and rust needs to be compiled/installed. On a modern machine, it is eating up all my 8 cores and all my memory and so far has been compiling for half an hour!

There is literally no reason why a compiler should eat this many resources to compile. #RustIsCrust #UnixVirus

Calling on all able bodied / HDL hackers to help me with getting the working on some half modern !

I have no strong opinions, the previous design worked on Spartan 6. The Arty looks nice. ICE40 might be too small, I dunno...

Anyone interested on working on the / ? I need HDL hackers ideally ... but the more the merrier!

Reinventing Lisp slowly: https://blog.scottlowe.org/2023/12/15/conditional-git-configuration/ -- why not just use a proper programming language for configuration files from the start? The so called Unix philosophy is nonsense.

"has banned FOO and its employees from ever contributing to BAR" -- a statement that should never be accepted in an project.

I demand that C finally gets its act together and start being useful for bit manipulation. LDB, DPB, MASK-FIELD ... #SmugLispWeenie

amszmidt,
@amszmidt@mastodon.social avatar

And I will happily take any fight that claims that C is a useful, usable, or suitable low level language. Be it in 1970 or 2024; C stands for Crap.

Random pondering about sustainable software, and operating systems like Project Oberon, Forth, Smalltalk, and the Lisp Machines .. Systems that a single individual can maintain (maybe not write ...)

amszmidt,
@amszmidt@mastodon.social avatar

@screwtape Any sustainable system needs to be entirely free software.

@amszmidt@mastodon.social avatar

The deviousness of the xz backdoor… and yet people think that using FOO language or ditching BAR would have mitigated it.

I don’t think people realize how vulnerable us free software maintainers are … been doing this for close to 30 years and I’m not surprised in the least. 😠

@screwtape @lispegistus I was thinking of a small toot series where I describe the CADR in detail, it is a pretty little machine and much simpler than one might thing (it is much simpler than the Z80!)

awoodsnet, to vim
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

People often talk about Emacs vs Vim. Every developer I’ve met uses Vim. Occasionally, some of the vim users will say they have previously emacs, but switched to vim.

So where are all the people who are currently using Emacs?

I’m not trolling or looking for an argument. I legit want to know!

amszmidt,
@amszmidt@mastodon.social avatar

@phundrak @hajovonta @0x1de @awoodsnet You don't need to customize eshell to get that behaviour. It also works for any file access .. DIRED? yup. M-x copy-file? yup!

Sprinkle some bookmarks on top of that for easy access to remote files ...

Another cool thing is file shadowing: https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/File-Shadowing.html

Read about how powerful and unique it is

Finish the tutorial, read the docs, have a nice little time

Feel a little bit of strain in my hand and remember someone on Stack Overflow talking about "Emacs Pinky"

Stay up late reading about Emacs pinky

Gasp in horror at all of the hairbrained rebinds and custom tools that people have used to avoid Repetitive Strain Injury on Emacs

amszmidt,
@amszmidt@mastodon.social avatar

@etenil @hmelman @abmurrow The only correct order is like the one on the
#LispMachine .. Meta-Control-SPACE-Control-Meta- ...

But Caps lock could exist, if it was a small key ... maybe positioned around Num Lock (anyone remember that?).

rml, to guix

One of the maintainers has blocked me for my vocal support for , without any confrontation or interaction between the two of us. As a long time activist in the International Solidarity Movement, I'm used to it, but I was under the impression Guix is a more open & progressive project than what is the norm for and

Seems to confirm those bad interactions I started having every time I chimed in on the mailing list over the past two years were in fact people trying to push me out, rather than just people having bad days.

amszmidt,
@amszmidt@mastodon.social avatar

@rml It is a inherent problem of CoC -- and it has always been the same situation why any project that implements one. CoC try to shove the issues we have in our communities under the rug, instead of trying to address them in an amicable manner.

An inclusive community needs to be able to have mutual disagreements.
