The Germans have voted for more flooding. Good luck and have fun! ✌🏼 #EUWahl2024

Next Sunday we have European Elections ( ) in Berlin and this time round I—like many around me—have no idea what to vote for.

Here’s a fast and loose treatment of a bunch of the political parties that are on the ballot here.

The social norm that makes it acceptable to take calls here should be extended to also allow anybody passing by to photo bomb the participants. https://rls.social/@alper/112557198880057366

In Germany now we have climate catastrophe on the doorstep but most of the city is still subservient to far too big combustion engine cars. 🤷🏽

When will the break come and how gentle will it be?

A good moment to compare the German political incompetence when it comes to flooding with the Netherlands.

There water management is organized across municipal boundaries and is not really democratic. There are elections for the water boards but nobody cares about them and they’re a fig leaf for a technocratic administration. https://mastodon.online/

I've got more things to read than I have time so good luck with your paywalled website.

Does anybody going to #republica notice over the years notice that everything is the same because there’s absolutely no progress on most topics?

The javascript ecosystem consists almost entirely of tools disagreeing with each other whether to use require or import to retrieve code. I've never seen something remotely as bad as this.

Trying to give stuff away for free on Kleinanzeigen is such a nightmare.

I’m going to set a €5 base price just to get rid of the flakiest people on the planet.

Always a bit of a comedown to arrive in Berlin from Amsterdam.

In comparison lots of things in Berlin are dangerous, backwards or unpleasant for no real reason and without the possibility of it getting better anytime in the next decade.

I don’t really understand why easyJet pushed a warning to be at AMS 2.5 hours early for security.

M gate security check took less than five minutes (BER was at least 15) and for the same luggage I had no secondaries (body and luggage check on BER).

This is why we can’t have digitalization in Germany.

Of course videoident isn’t 100% secure but you’ll notice that they don’t mention an alternative. That is because any alternative will also not be 100% secure. That is the excuse to never digitalize anything.

100% security does not exist and people who neglect to tell you that are bad faith actors. The only relevant question is whether the benefits of a system outweigh the harms. https://openbiblio.social/@esthermenhard/112495487259891659

Everybody who’s in favor of nuclear energy should be forced to live on the mountain in Germany that’s leaking radioactive waste.

That’d solve a bunch of problems in one go.

PSA: When diversity is used as an excuse to:

  • introduce and paper over systems of domination
  • reduce human experience to the least common multiple

Then it’s not really diversity.

All of Germany has themselves in a knot over digital train tickets. The risk here is not that your battery will run out or some imagined Datenschutz risk vector.

The problem is that the apps are fully and entirely dogshit.

There's been a push to clean-up #Berlin's trains for the summer tourist season. Of course because real solutions are not on the table, what they've done is put one group of unwanted bodies at the various rail stations to keep away a different group of unwanted bodies (the junkies who'd normally sit here).

When cussing out cars I have to remember that in current temperatures people have their windows open and can hear me. Today a car was blocking the cycling path; the passenger window opened, a woman cursed at me in Turkish and then she sprayed windshield fluid aimed at me.

Booked a plane from Amsterdam to Berlin and after realising what an 1hr+ ordeal it is to get into the city from BER immediately regret not taking the train.

As the old saying goes, the state of Germany is not much more than three carmakers in a trench coat.

It’s going to be hilarious—in both the best and the worst meaning of the word—to see how the country reacts to this entire industry being relegated to the dustbin of history. https://infosec.exchange/@masek/112415298908547434

Went upstairs to talk to our neighbour about their music that I could feel in my living room and they had the gall to compare that to the noise that children may make in the morning.

Nothing worth saving here. Nuke all these people from orbit.

A rare effort by Germans to actually grapple with the events happening in Israel/Palestine. In the podcast you can hear at least one of the participants lose their mind in real-time while talking about it.

This is also why most people when offered the option to opt-out of grappling with any big issue prefer to have it be resolved by dirty politicians and unimaginable force far far away.

Is it too late to change my vote to the Netherlands?

Cool that we can regulate electric scooters into uselessness in cities but to digitally regulate the speed and parking behavior of cars (almost all of which come equipped with onboard GPS and electronics) is not something that’s even being discussed.

Instead carmakers put forward proposals to GPS tag school kids so that their cars might avoid them.

Scooter app notification about designated low-speed zones.
Scooter parking ban notification (“Sorry you can’t park here”) in app in an area where there are designated cluster areas.
