Good #OpenScience practice isn't about tech tools. It's about teaching researchers to reconceptualize science as a common good, and how to document their scientific processes for transparency and usability by current and future generations.

Tech use is a tool, not the goal.

Abstract text: Building on two decades of dedicated effort, Open Science in Chemistry has garnered renewed momentum. This personal perspective will sketch its evolutionary trajectory starting with Jmol and JChemPaint, via The OpenScience Project, the Chemistry Development Kit and the Blue Obelisk Movement. These developments will be compared with publishing models and the FAIR principles with a focus on their differences. Examples of the status quo will include recent research from projects like NanoCommons, SbD4Nano, Scholia, and WikiPathways, leading us to current challenges. The talk will end with a vision of the next phase in Open Science in Chemistry.

Abstract: When we get into science, we do so because we want to have an impact on the world, explore the boundaries of knowledge, or just answer questions. Yet, we see so much bad quality science, results that are not reproducible, and building on the shoulders of giants seems to be so far away. One building block of research quality is bringing the right knowledge to the right people. Open Science is hard. Data analyses are hard. Research Software Engineering is hard. So how do we get these skills across? Through training, of course! About: Dr. Heidi Seibold‘s research is at the intersection of data science, open science, and health research. Her last position in academia was as a young investigator group leader at Helmholtz AI. She is now a self-employed trainer for open and reproducible data science and is building the Digital Research Academy, a grassroots trainer network for open science, data literacy, and research software engineering. She writes a newsletter with >1.500 subscribers.

I have a colleague working in fuel research with solid but negative results. He's trying to do the right thing but struggling to publish as the paper keeps getting rejecting for having negative results 😠 .

Does anyone have recommendations for a journal that would consider the paper?

There are two steps to #OpenScience :

1. We document in enough detail to ensure usability, and to accurately assess reliability.

2. Then we open that information to the world.

We've been so focused on 2, we've lost sight that without 1, 2 is pointless and even dangerous.

Let's work on doing better.

The most radical idea in #OpenScience is to gently take researchers by the hand and patiently teach them, 1 on 1, how to do useful #OpenScience documentation, using evidence-based pedagogy grounded in the equally radical idea that science is done by mere humans, warts and all.

Writing policy and imposing it top-down is not teaching.
