Disquieting thought:

Accelerating scientific development depends on substantially slowing the rate of research paper publication.

aeryn_thrace,
@aeryn_thrace@mastodon.social avatar

@jospueyo not only that. In order for the science we do to be usable by others, it requires careful, concurrent, and usable documentation of what we did to address our research question.

That takes time.

But that information is indispensable to advancing science.

It is obscene that our choices are 1. to advance our careers via copious publication or 2. To advance science.

Current progress has been despite the current system, and at the cost of extraordinary research waste.

opinion:

Good practice isn't about tech tools. It's about teaching researchers to reconceptualize science as a common good, and how to document their scientific processes for transparency and usability by current and future generations.

Tech use is a tool, not the goal.

Hello All!

I need your help.

I have a colleague working in fuel research with solid but negative results. He's trying to do the right thing but struggling to publish as the paper keeps getting rejecting for having negative results 😠 .

Does anyone have recommendations for a journal that would consider the paper?

Many thanks!

There are two steps to #OpenScience :

  1. We document in enough detail to ensure usability, and to accurately assess reliability.

  2. Then we open that information to the world.

We've been so focused on 2, we've lost sight that without 1, 2 is pointless and even dangerous.

Let's work on doing better.

@robotistry @ukrio @emilymbender @academicchatter at @fzj_rdm we are working on precisely this problem. We’ve developed theory and pedagogical methods to read and understand papers. When we applied them, we found most scientific literature grossly inadequate. So we’ve been developing theory and pedagogy to understand how to document science so it’s comprehensible and usable. The basic premise is that scientists >

@aeryn_thrace@mastodon.social avatar

@robotistry @ukrio @emilymbender @academicchatter @fzj_rdm are human and understand and organize information within human constraints. This has let us to understanding science as goal-directed behavior. We are working with a few research teams and they find the approach a revelation.

aeryn_thrace,
@aeryn_thrace@mastodon.social avatar

@robotistry @ukrio @emilymbender @academicchatter @fzj_rdm we will make all materials and templates available as soon as we complete the prototypes.

Open Access without conceptual accessibility IS NOT #OpenScience

What is scientific conceptual accessibility?

Scientific processes described in enough detail and with enough clarity to be reproducible.

The most radical idea in #OpenScience is to gently take researchers by the hand and patiently teach them, 1 on 1, how to do useful #OpenScience documentation, using evidence-based pedagogy grounded in the equally radical idea that science is done by mere humans, warts and all.

Writing policy and imposing it top-down is not teaching.
