OK, I've figured out how to settle the Gen X vs Millennial cut off:

What was the first boy band you clearly remember while they were popular?

If it's Backstreet, NSYNC, etc, you're clearly a millennial.

If it's New Kids on the Block or earlier, you're Gen X.

Pretty sure this is as objective as it's possibly going to get and better criteria than Pew going back and forth between 80 and 84.

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@vwbusguy I like the "Xenial" label as well as any of them. But by your test, definitely gen-x. Also by either of the dates you mentioned, though I've seen cut-offs in the 70s that I don't meet.

@Conan_Kudo @carlwgeorge can either of you think of any reason I either should not switch from RHEL to CentOS Stream on my desktop/laptops or any considerations I should be thinking of that I might be missing?

In my mind I'm just going to get the new patches faster from a different build system signed by a different gpg key. I also don't have to deal with subman. Am I missing some big consideration I'm not thinking about? I'm nervous I have a blind spot. 🤔

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@maxamillion @Conan_Kudo @carlwgeorge I find RHEL to be a little slow moving for me as a desktop system, and figure CentOS Stream would have the same drawback. But I don't see any reason to worry about Stream for a desktop that doesn't equally apply to RHEL.

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@maxamillion @Conan_Kudo @carlwgeorge for server systems, so am I. I only find it frustrating on my desktop/laptop systems.

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@maxamillion @Conan_Kudo @carlwgeorge indeed. And my desktops are still in the family. I just find Fedora fits my preferences better on the desktop.

What bleepity bleeping bleep is wrong with people who not only think they should get to have an opinion as to whether you park your own car in your own driveway, but also think they should be allowed to enforce that opinion and are willing to actually put in effort to do so?

@DrTCombs And I don't know about you, but I often find that my heart rate goes down for the first few minutes of my ride home, because biking feels good. Can't say that about driving at commute time!

Tel Aviv spent a long time to ge sexy public transportation like this. Hopefully the first line was the hardest!

Platform screen doors, level door boarding. The light rail trains run super fast undergound-- not sure how it compares to blue line in UTC but "feels" faster, with each station serving a dense cachement area.

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@tahinisauce @nevomagnezi I'd guess they are typically faster, just because expensive underground stations are probably further apart on average than surface stations.

TL;DR: how do you ?

My super nerdy kid has decided she wants to spend the rest of her hot summer break creating a podcast in which she teaches parents how to help their elementary aged with .

She's all in. First episode recorded, eps 2-4 sketched out.

What comes next?? How do you go from recording to ? Not looking to make money! Just trying to support her efforts to find her true calling and save other kids from their clueless parents.

@DrTCombs I have never podcasted, but I have recorded audio for training offered by a company headquartered in a tower in downtown Raleigh. Audacity did everything I needed and more.

@black_intellect to be fair, we shouldn't let most humans drive; we suck at it. But we do need to provide alternatives so people can get around without killing each other.

@CmdrTaco doesn't that make it harder, because all the superconductors we have need to be cold?

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@tiffanycli yeah. Every now and then I still hear some statistic about how much time people spend "online" and wonder what it even means anymore. Between personal and work phones, laptops, desktops, and smart speakers, about the only time I'm more than a second from looking up whatever on the Internet is when I'm biking.

Only people who are too poor to have a bicycle with a cargo trailer drive a car. How else would you get exercise, enjoy the great outdoors, and carry a load at the same time?

No one has time to only do one of those things.

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@nevomagnezi haha but also serious.

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@nevomagnezi likewise commuting. Can you believe some people have to spend an hour a day driving to and from work, then spend a whole DIFFERENT hour getting their daily cardio? Often, they also have to waste half an hour or more driving to a place where they pay to borrow exercise equipment. All because they can't afford a bike to get it all done at the same time.

Bike friends: the kid has outgrown their Specialized Hotrock 24", so it's pretty much time to look for a "teenager" bike. Leaning towards an e-bike so they'll have confidence that if they leave the central mesa, they can climb back home. What should I be looking at?

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@nevomagnezi I lean towards class I or class III, since either is pedal-assisted by definition. Class II just confuses me. The kid in question is 4'11", with parents at 5'0" and 5'9". So I expect at least 5'0", but with XX chromosomes probably never 5'9".

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@nevomagnezi OTOH, their feet are already larger than their mother's, so who knows? Unlike mom, they aren't growing up in poverty or as a notably picky eater.

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@jtds Kid DEFINITELY wants good brakes. Probably the biggest difference for them between their 16" department-store bike and the first 20" Specialized was that they suddenly believed they could stop, which made them willing to go.

acdingman,
@acdingman@sandiegourbanists.com avatar

@jtds 20" -> 24" was almost a no-op for them. Bike changed color slightly, and Dad stopped worrying that their seat couldn't get high enough.
