If you follow me and wonder why I haven’t been posting, I’m going through some health stuff right now and I’m pretty depressed about it. Until I have surgery (in two months, and then two months of recovery) I have to severely limit my activity so I’m inside sitting around all the time instead of being active and enjoying the spring like I should. I’m being involuntarily checked out of a big chunk of 2024. ☹️

aaroncorsi,

@enobacon I got some temporary relief recently so I’ve been able to at least run short errands like picking up food or going to the post office as long as I crank up the e-assist. That’s at least enough to be normal, now it’s just a matter of waiting for my surgery date and not pushing myself too hard until then.

I love you, Portland.

Some moments from a walk around my neighborhood, Portland is such a beautiful place in the spring. #

I was legitimately almost killed just now by a car that sped up to pass me on the left as I was making a left turn on a greenway right in front of my house. They saw me signal and sped up so quickly that I didn’t even notice it and they almost hit me with a left hook, I think they had sped up to about 40mph based on the speed differential. This is why Portland’s neighborhood greenways don’t feel safe without traffic diverters. I’m shaking right now. #pdxbikes #pdx #BikeTooter #cycling

It has felt like spring the last few days and I’m so ready for it

aaroncorsi, to pdx

I wasn’t expecting any different but it’s so disappointing to live in a “pedestrian friendly” city that plows and treats the roadway but does nothing for the sidewalk. I had to walk two miles round trip to get to the post office and the choice was to walk in the road with trucks passing in slush 1 foot away from me or on a sidewalk encased in an inch of solid ice. It honestly sucked. #carfree #pdx

The Bike Fun iOS app is officially out so go download it now! It’s totally free, no ads or trackers, and is the best way to view the Shift2Bikes calendar on an iPhone, iPad or Mac!

I hope you enjoy using it as much as I’ve enjoyed making it, and I’ve got more features on the way so stay tuned.

As long as I don't see drivers pushing their cars, I can't hear when someone is asking me to walk a cargo bike.

aaroncorsi,

@enobacon

America: We didn’t want to build dedicated bicycle space because it would take away from cars so cyclists can just go in this pedestrian space.

Also America: WTF why are cyclists riding in this pedestrian space? Don’t you know how dangerous that is? You should just walk your bike, that’s what you got it out for, right?

aaroncorsi, to random

When I’m mayor of Hypothetical City I will insist that we build a new highway… but it will only be one mile long, full of broken glass, with no on-ramp or off-ramp, it won’t go anywhere people want to be, and it will start and end in open fields with no safe way to get there in a car.

After that, every time there is a request to spend money on car infrastructure I will point to this highway and yell “but we built that expensive highway and nobody even uses it!”

This is a great article about how society loses when cars are allowed everywhere, and how Waze will shove them everywhere in order to extract profit. https://lamag.com/featured/waze-los-angeles-neighborhoods

aaroncorsi, to Trains

I’m riding on an that parallels and and noticed that the side of the highway is lined with litter but people can’t throw their trash out of a train window so the train tracks are litter-free. Yet another way that car dependency destroys our environment but people just accept it because you don’t see the damage from a car window.

Hey Mastodon, I want your favorite bite-sized interesting facts about bikes or urbanism! I will be displaying them in the Bike Fun iOS app while the rides load in, like you see in this example.

aaroncorsi, to cycling

New rule: if you argue that bikes only make up 2.8% of mode share then you’re also required to immediately point out that it’s in spite of the fact that 99.9% of infrastructure in the same city is designed primarily or only for cars. #BikeTooter #carfree #pdx #pdxbikes #infrastructure

@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

#emacs is a great operating system, it just needs a good editor. This kind of thing is where viper mode lost me, like vim would just :r! ls whatever | grep something and I still had to play a flamadiddle and type a missive to accomplish that in emacs.

aaroncorsi,

@enobacon I just use a GUI text editor and an actual IDE like I live in [current year]

aaroncorsi,

@enobacon most of my dev these days is Swift so I use Xcode and Playgrounds a lot. Outside of that I’m usually using BBEdit or IntelliJ depending on the project. Or the Arduino “IDE” which barely deserves the title 😂

How Portland Metro Chamber and Business Lobbyists Undermine Ballot Initiatives
#PDX #PortlandOr #democracy #KBOO

Oregon’s citizen-initiated ballot measure process is a tool of grassroots democracy, allowing collective action by an organized majority of the population. However, time and time again, those with vast resources have impeded attempts to make the city more equitable and safer for all. In this segment, Guest Mole Lauren Goldberg examines how business lobbyists have undermined citizen-led ballot initiatives (including PCEF, Preschool for All, Measure 110, City Charter reform, and more) – both before and after they were voted into law – to stop our elected officials from fully implementing the programs voters fought for, in favor of protecting capitalist interests.

aaroncorsi,

@anarchademic @enobacon the corruption and subsequent dysfunction of Portland city government at nearly every level is just mind blowing to me.

aaroncorsi, to cycling

For Christmas I would like every American city to immediately stop spending money on cars and redirect every penny of that to transit and bike infrastructure. We’re good on roads, we should be building the stuff we desperately need instead of more of the stuff we already have too much of.

Waiting for the Saturday farmer’s market crew to show up. Heavier gloves made a huge difference this morning, I could still feel my fingers when I got here!

aaroncorsi, to cycling

Does anyone know what this attachment system is called? My bike’s rack came with this little spring loaded tab in addition to the big clamping spring. I want to get a new trunk bag that is quick to attach and remove, this seems like it could be the ticket if I knew what term to search for.

I finally got to test the Cleverhood Anorak in real rain this week. I especially like the long tail, the high neck, and the front pockets. I was outside for about an hour total and felt pretty comfortable the whole time.

Two thumbs up so far!

aaroncorsi,

@ascentale have you tried their ponchos/capes too? I have a Cleverhood rain cape and I’ve been curious how it compares to the anorak.

aaroncorsi,

@bikepedantic @ascentale I really like my cape. Since it’s open underneath the airflow is amazing and I don’t get sweaty like I do in every rain jacket I’ve tried. It does a great job keeping your upper legs dry too but below the knee you have to wear something waterproof. The main drawbacks are feeling wind more and looking kinda goofy, neither of which have ruined it for me.

@seabikeblog@social.ridetrans.it avatar
aaroncorsi,

@seabikeblog why does every city insist on using removable or otherwise flimsy protection for bike lanes? They don’t use removable plastic guard rails on highways, why do multi-ton steel cars get the hardened treatment to protect them from each other but soft human bodies get flimsy plastic sticks to protect them from the cars? So frustrating.
